A Fantastic Instructor!!!

I have known Derek for many years, and can say what an excellent young man he is in character and helpfulness, As a mother of 10 children, I am concerned that their teachers be well qualified and have a positive influence on my kids. Derek is a wonderful teacher, encouaging, talented, and able to help even the most basic drummer. If he ever plays for you, his giftedness will shine! He is truely an fantastic instructor and my son enjoyed every lesson with him. I would HIGHLY recommend him as your choice to learn and improve in percussion.

Learning to play an instrument begins with loving music!

The first question I ask a new student is: "What makes you want to play an instrument?". Some people want to play rock, others pop, and others have many different interests, but it all begins with a love for music.

I teach my students to play their favorite songs right from the start. I believe that when you learn music by figuring it out on your own -- by learning to listen -- you gain something very valuable that you can take with you no matter what your musical goals are.

I'm not a strict teacher, but I believe in being disciplined when it comes to the fundamentals. If you have good technique, it frees you to play anything you want to play.

In a typical hour-long lesson, my beginning students spend from 10-30 minutes on the fundamentals, depending on how much time the student has to practice at home. The rest of the lesson is spent applying what we've learned.

It usually takes just a few months before ...

About John

I started playing drums in my parents' basement when I was 9 years old. It was just me, a stereo, and a bunch of cardboard boxes I made into my first drumset. Every day, I listened to to my favorite songs over and over again to figure out how to play them. To me, there was nothing more awesome in the world than music. Since then my musical journey has taken me far and wide. I've studied percussion and composition with world class teachers, toured Europe, composed music for commercials, co-written award winning songs, and performed with a variety of artists at such venues as the Hard Rock Cafe, BB King's, World Cafe, 55 Bar, The Living Room, The Bitter End, Shrine, Rockwood Music Hall, and many others. And the one thing that hasn't changed? I'm still totally in awe of it all. These ...

John is a very good piano teacher. He challenges me and is not strict. He has been teaching me about chords and he is making sure that I understand it every step of the way. As we have been going on, we have been playing tougher and tougher pieces while piano is getting easier and easier for me.
(From: Abraham, 11 yrs old, a student of John since Oct. 2013)

He's a great piano teacher. John knows what to do every time I have a song. He knows things if I don't know the answer. He describes the answer to make me understand.

Excellent teacher

John is a fantastic teacher. He is very patient with my 12 year old, knows how to explain things to him and always makes the lessons a lot of fun even though my son is not always easy to deal with. We have stuck with John for more then two years now and we are happy he has stuck with us. Thanks to him, my son has made significant progress with the piano, the basics of music theory and general musical appreciation.

He's an unbelievable teacher!

Paul is a teacher kids and parents would beg for! He's patient, kind, funny and amazing with my son. My child is not easy to calm, let alone teach, but Paul has this kind and fun personality that connects well with my son. When its time to learn they get down to business but when my son needs a break from the concentration, Paul allows him to break loose a bit and even joins in on the fun! I've never been more happy with a teacher before!!
Thank you Paul!! Your awesome!!!

Paul is awesome!

I started taking lessons with Paul when I was 14 to work on songs I was playing with a couple of friends at school. Paul teaches me so much and he's very organized. We have a lot of fun during lessons. He's very passionate about music and he knows how to convey his love for drumming.

About Peter

Hey there! I'm originally from Salzburg, Austria. I have been playing drums for over 20 years (teaching for about 8 years) and am currently playing professionally around the NYC area. I graduated from the A.Bruckner University in Austria in 2006 with a degree in jazz performance & didactic studies w/ great drummer and composer Doug Hammond and later Jeff Boudreaux. Other drummers I've been studying over the years include Greg Hutchinson, Jonathan Blake, Jim Black and many more... After one year of master studies I decided to move to New York City in 2010. Having been established in Europe (I toured in over 20 countries) I sought new challenges; plus the big apple had always had a very high attraction to me. In NYC I founded my own group "Wayfarers" that I recorded and album and did ...

About Derek James

My goal as a teacher is to share all the knowledge and experience I have acquired over 30+ years of drumming. Based on my education from such a diversity of teachers and institutions, I have much to offer. I use many techniques to help the student retain what he or she has learned and teach in a simple, intuitive manor. I am a friendly, patient, compassionate person who will always make you feel comfortable while you learn. My journey started at the age of 8 when I began private lessons for 8 years. I then studied Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian styles of drumming at the prestigious Drummers Collective in Manhattan. My fascination of these particular genres lead me to a renowned teacher by the name of Richie Rodriguez, who refined my hand drumming skills and advanced reading concepts. These ...

My son Jacob has taken drum lessons with Peter for several years. Peter has continuously challenged Jacob with difficult lessons and general rudiments while also keeping him excited and interested in the pieces. Jacob comes home motivated to independently practice and eager for every next session. Jacob is active with his high school band, pep band and jazz band. Jacob has now twice qualified for Concert Band Snare with the Massachusetts Music Educators Central Districts which we can attest is due to the great instruction from Peter.
