About Me

Sheena R., recently praised in the New York times as "a light, perky soprano", has appeared in numerous operatic roles and song recitals. A graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, she had the opportunity to work with world-renowned voice pedagogue Richard Miller as an assistant at the Otto B Schoepfle Vocal Arts Center. She completed her Graduate Study at the New England Conservatory, and had the great privilege to study with James McDonald and John Moriarty. She sang the Soprano Solo in Brahms' Requiem under the baton of choral icon Sir David Willcocks, as well as Zerlina in the Boston Opera Collaborative production of Don Giovanni. During her time in Boston she was also fortunate enough to sing for Renee Fleming and perform in the Boston premier of Steve Reich's Daniel Variations as one of four vocal soloists. She lived in New Orleans, where she was affiliated with the Louisiana Academy of the Performing Arts. She maintained a private studio of nearly 60 students, and helped them prepare for recitals, auditions, musicals, and choral performances. Since moving to New York in 2010 she has performed over 12 roles with Light Opera of New York, The Blue Hill Troupe, and Amore Opera, among others.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have taught students at all levels, and cater my lessons to meet the students individual needs. For voice lessons, I teach classical technique (relying heavily on the training of classic pedagogues such as Lamperti, but also more recent teachers like Richard Miller) which I have found can translate well to any vocal style (jazz, musical theater, pop, etc.). A strong foundation in breath support, proper vowel articulation, sustaining exercises, and vocal agility make up the majority of my teaching method. Once the technical ground work has been set, I spend about half of the lesson working on vocal exercises and half working on repertoire.

For piano, I like to use the Faber method books, which I have found to be the best combination of theory and execution. Each student will spend equal time on lesson work, technique, theory, and performance preparation. I work most often with younger beginning students, teaching them proper posture, five finger positions, and simple melodic concepts. I am very patient, and love to see the progress that even a 4 or 5 year old will see in just a few lessons.

About Me

In 1998, upon college graduation, I began teaching private vocal lessons. I have taught for two schools of music, First United Methodist Music School in Texarkana, Arkansas and Burbank Music Academy in Burbank, California. In 2007, I began offering vocal lessons online through Skype. My current home studio is located in Manhattan.

I have the honor of working with some amazing students in my studio including, American Idol finalist;Rachel Hale, Singer/Song writer, Sara Skinner: Actress Molly Quinn; Actor, John R Colley; Ark-La-Tex's country star Klancy Johnson; singer/actress;Tara Clem and many more.

I am dedicated to helping people explore their vocal talents and skills in the entertainment field. My focus centers on treating your entire body - not only your voice - as a tool for performance. This not only includes lessons for voice (speaking & singing) but career and life coaching. In performance often your body will want to work against itself. Your body become tense, you over think, and worry. My motivation is to help you move to a place where you can over come your insecurities and fears by giving you an understanding of vocal production and its connection to your body and mind. My desire is to lead you to being your best.

Here are some examples of how I can help: increasing vocal range, eliminating "breaks" in your range, supported sound, natural breathing techniques, body alignment, conquering performance anxiety, stage presence, song interpretation, college preparation, smart goal setting, increased creativity, and positive internal reprogramming.

I've been a member of the National Association of Teacher's of singing for 6 years and am also a member of Actors Equity, SAG-AFTRA, NARAS (the Grammy's) and a lifetime member for the music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota. I hold 2 Fine Arts degrees in Music and Drama as well as a Bachelor of Applied Arts; Sciences in Administrative Leadership with an emphasis in Psychology.

*** Lesson Details ***
In your lesson, I start where you're at. I identify immediate problems and then put you on a regimen to move you toward your vocal best. I am a stern but encouraging teacher. I expect a vocalist to practice.

Whether a beginner or seasoned performer. My goal is to get your voice to a place of ease in production and to articulate your performance in a way to connect with your audience.
Each lesson is recorded and emailed so you can listen and practice. Practicing is imperative to building your vocal muscles and performance skills.

Here is a list of other benefits that I provide: ear training, finding your true voice - not just an imitation of your favorite vocalist, smart career goal setting, overcoming stage fright, audition/interview techniques, positive self-programming, finding your acting "type"career marketing strategies, how to work "where you're at", scene study, monologue preparation, and a building basic musical theatre audition book.

The following is available in my studio:
-an Mp3 of your warm-ups either on CD (you provide), flash drive (you supply) or a download via website,
-music track editing (includes cutting, tempo changes, key adjustments, etc. (I usually do music editing outside of a lesson.),
-stage choreography/blocking,
-microphone training,
-and studio recording training.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Yeti microphone, H4n Zoom recorder, Audio Technica AT 3035 microphone.
-Music Editing Software: Pro-Tools, Cubase LX, Audacity, Garageband, Sony Sound Forge

*** Specialties ***

I am also a trained Opera singer and jazz vocalist and have trained in Vocal Pedagogy both in college as well as with the National Association of Teachers of Singing of which I am a full member.

My students have gone on to become recording artists,Broadway performers, Blues and Cabaret artists, performing in concerts, radio, film and TV.

Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up we will begin to work on songs. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. Subjects Taught

Guitar, Music Performance, Music Recording, Songwriting, Speaking Voice, Ukulele

About Me

Jeff is a seasoned instructor in guitar, songwriting, music performance and music business. He also offers lessons in public speaking, voice-over performance and beginning ukulele.. He welcomes students of all ages and experience and has successfully and happily taught beginners to pro-level musicians and recording artists. Jeff is pleased to announce that he is currently accepting Takelessons online students via Skype.

Jeff can teach guitar and songwriting in all styles and is an adept acoustic and electric guitarist. His knowledge of chords is extensive and his acoustic fingerpicking skills are formidable. Jeff structures all lessons around the individual goals and playing level of his students. Jeff's students tend to study with him for quite some time, as his wealth of knowledge, diversity of instruction and patience are extraordinary. And Jeff prides himself on customizing every student's lessons based on their particular preferences, goals and skill level. "It's a very personalized kind of instruction, as I never take a cookie-cutter
approach to teaching...".
Jeff created and taught songwriting and music business classes at colleges, universities, and music schools throughout the country for many years. Some of the places he taught include UCLA Extension, Santa Monica College, Pasadena City College and The Harrison School Of Music.
When asked to summarize his views on teaching and music: "Teaching and playing music always puts a smile on my face; especially when I see that the student is having fun, learning what they want to learn and feeling the passion about music that motivated me to pursue my own musical career".

As a working singer/songwriter/guitarist, Jeff is known for his memorable melodies, intelligently crafted lyrics and heartfelt vocals. His compositions have earned him over 35 awards from various national and international songwriting contests and he is a former staff songwriter for the long-standing New York City-based publisher, Bourne Music. He has also won best music video awards at two international film festivals.

Some of the artists that Jeff has been compared to as a guitarist and vocalist include Keb' Mo', James Taylor, Kenny Loggins, John Mayer, Bill Withers, Jim Croce, and Don Henley.

Jeff is a NJ native, but lived and performed in Los Angeles for many years, where he worked in the studio or shared the stage with well-known artists such as Dave Koz, Norman Brown, John Daversa, Hiroshima, Little Richard and N'Dea Davenport.

Jeff catalog of over 450 songs and compositions spans virtually every genre, but many of his tunes are amalgams of pop, blues, jazz, R&B, country and rock. Quite a number of Jeff's songs
have appeared in film and TV. One that Jeff is particularly proud of, is the dynamic pop ballad, "Journey Of The Heart" (co-written by Jeanne Smith), which was licensed by the N.C.A.A. (National
Collegiate Athletic Association), who deemed it "the official anthem" of their NCAA Hall Of Champions facility in Indianapolis.

Jeff has commercially released 4 CD's of his original material: The most recent of these is his 2013 release, "Blujanova" (a merging of blues, jazz and bossa nova), which was praised by platinum selling and Grammy-nominated jazz star, Dave Koz: "Jeff's voice is so clean and pure...the production is lovely...warm and inviting...I love the interesting and surprising takes on some classics too, especially 'I Feel Good'…that brought a smile to my face!".
The other CD's stretch into other genres. "Truthteller" (bluesy pop/rock and singer/songwriter material) "Me, Myself, and I" (acoustic) and "The Spin" (pop, rock, and country-tinged singer/songwriter material). All of Jeff's albums are on his label, Relevant Records. John Braheny, author of the best-selling "The Craft And Business Of Songwriting (Writer's Digest Books), gave high praise to Jeff's CD, "The Spin", calling it "honest, crafty, melodic and the songs are all exceptional". Patch.com called Jeff "a consummate songwriter".

*** Lesson Details ***
At the first lesson, I will ask you to tell me what songs you want to play and artists you want to play like and I will set the table for that by providing the chords you'll need, chord and scales and exercises to enable you to play them and guidelines and tricks on how to make it happen as quickly as possible. I know a wide variety of songs in all styles and styles, including current hit songs as well as pop, rock, blues, jazz, country songs. if you have a song or artist that I don't know already, I will learn it (often on the spot) and if not right then, at the next lesson. I have taught my students to play songs by artists as varied as Taylor Swift, U2, Jason Mraz, Adele, Eric Clapton, Django Reinhardt, Doc Watson. And that's just naming a few.

I always make it clear to my students at the first lesson: "There is no such thing as a stupid question". I want you to feel comfortable to stop me at any time to clarify what I am teaching you, ESPECIALLY if it is too difficult or vague. I pride myself on always being organized for your lesson and making sure that you grasp whatever it is I am teaching you. The goal is to get you to be able to play what you want as quickly as possible. This will take practice and dedication on your part, but I will do everything in my power to help you get there.

I never force anything on any of my students. but I feel it would be beneficial for you to learn to read music OR read tablature and chord diagrams. You tell me which one and we'll go in that direction. If you'd like to read music, then we can decide on a book for you. I have used Hal Leonard instructional books (with CD's! this way you can play with a backing track and get a sense of rhythm, which is very important), but I'm open to other method books you might have or like.

After 3 to 6 months, you will feel you are significantly more skilled on the guitar than you were before we started lessons. You will know more chords (and move from chord to chord), be able to do at least some basic fingerpicking and be able to read some music or tablature.

*** Specialties ***

Shannon C. New York, NY

Subjects Taught

Mandolin, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing, Speaking Voice

About Me

My name is Shannon, and I have been teaching and coaching kids and
adults in music and musicianship for over six years. I have a Bachelors
of Music in composition and a Masters of Music in music theory. I have
trained and performed in New York, New Jersey, Italy and Switzerland, as
a pianist, composer and soprano. I love children and have worked with
children and young adults with all manner of developmental and learning
disabilities. I believe that every musician deserves to have rigor and
polish--but I also believe that the process of polishing and rigorous
work doesn't have to be painful or discouraging. I believe that anyone
can be musical, and that bringing a person to their full musicality is a
beautiful gift for both student and teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored entirely to a student's needs, expectations and
learning style. I draw from a number of pedagogies, from the French
Conservatory method to old Italian solfegio methods to Kodaly. But I
believe that students learn best when they are presented with
information in a way that fits their learning style, and because of
this, every lesson is different. I do not believe that busy work or
excessive homework is valuable, but I do believe in cultivating good,
useful habits outside lesson time.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a baby grand piano in my studio space, as well as plenty of space, music stands and relevant literature.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students wishing to study voice and piano in their own homes should have a suitable keyboard or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I have an extremely flexible and varied methodology, which draws from
the French Conservatory method, various methods such as those devised by
Hindemith, Kodaly, Bartok and Edlund. For vocal training I draw from
many reliable Italian methods, including Vaccai and Marchesi.
