Learning to play an instrument begins with loving music!

The first question I ask a new student is: "What makes you want to play an instrument?". Some people want to play rock, others pop, and others have many different interests, but it all begins with a love for music.

I teach my students to play their favorite songs right from the start. I believe that when you learn music by figuring it out on your own -- by learning to listen -- you gain something very valuable that you can take with you no matter what your musical goals are.

I'm not a strict teacher, but I believe in being disciplined when it comes to the fundamentals. If you have good technique, it frees you to play anything you want to play.

In a typical hour-long lesson, my beginning students spend from 10-30 minutes on the fundamentals, depending on how much time the student has to practice at home. The rest of the lesson is spent applying what we've learned.

It usually takes just a few months before ...

About John

I started playing drums in my parents' basement when I was 9 years old. It was just me, a stereo, and a bunch of cardboard boxes I made into my first drumset. Every day, I listened to to my favorite songs over and over again to figure out how to play them. To me, there was nothing more awesome in the world than music. Since then my musical journey has taken me far and wide. I've studied percussion and composition with world class teachers, toured Europe, composed music for commercials, co-written award winning songs, and performed with a variety of artists at such venues as the Hard Rock Cafe, BB King's, World Cafe, 55 Bar, The Living Room, The Bitter End, Shrine, Rockwood Music Hall, and many others. And the one thing that hasn't changed? I'm still totally in awe of it all. These ...

John is a very good piano teacher. He challenges me and is not strict. He has been teaching me about chords and he is making sure that I understand it every step of the way. As we have been going on, we have been playing tougher and tougher pieces while piano is getting easier and easier for me.
(From: Abraham, 11 yrs old, a student of John since Oct. 2013)

He's a great piano teacher. John knows what to do every time I have a song. He knows things if I don't know the answer. He describes the answer to make me understand.

Excellent teacher

John is a fantastic teacher. He is very patient with my 12 year old, knows how to explain things to him and always makes the lessons a lot of fun even though my son is not always easy to deal with. We have stuck with John for more then two years now and we are happy he has stuck with us. Thanks to him, my son has made significant progress with the piano, the basics of music theory and general musical appreciation.

About Cem

Thanks for checking out my profile. I look forward to helping you reach your musical goals in drum and percussion! Here's a little info about my musical training: Born in Istanbul, Turkey and raised in Tulsa, OK, my first musical experiences were on my grandmother's old piano. I was later introduced to a drum set when my brother and I received a drum set as a gift. I played in several local bands and in my high school jazz band in Tulsa, playing a range of musical styles from rock, swing, funk, and Latin. I decided in my senior year of high school to take music seriously and moved to NYC to study at the Drummer's Collective. During this period, I also focused on Middle Eastern hand percussion (doumbek, riq, and frame drum) and studied with Mehmet Akatay in Turkey. After ...

Cem is a great musician and instructor. His lessons are always informative, and best of all not boring. He plays alongside you and he is always patient, and helpful. Cem is a excellent teacher who wants to see his students progress, and I would recommend taking lessons with him.

Instructor Review

Cem is an excellent instructor, a very patient teacher that takes the time to discuss the importance of form and sound quality. I have always had the desire to play drums and have never played so I appreciate his approach of making me feel at ease by playing along with me so I can see his form and technique. All the feedback I have received I have been able to return to the next class with improved skill and understanding. I really enjoy and look forward to my classes and I am happy with my progression during a short period of time.

I've played percussion my whole life and enjoy teaching it very much. Snare drum, drum set, mallet percussion, auxiliary percussion, and drum programming are all possible areas I can help you with.

About Charles

*** Travel Equipment *** If it's just theory, any small keyboard will suffice. If it's piano, especially classical, the minimal instrument would be a 76-key or larger weighted action keyboard with a sustain pedal. The ideal would be an acoustic piano. *** Specialties *** I'm a very versatile pianist. I've played percussion all my life as well. In the professional world I'm mostly a conductor these days, working on Broadway, consulting on new projects, orchestrating, etc. The styles that I deal with every day range from Pop, to Classical, to Broadway, to World Music and everything in-between. My knowledge, as a musicologist, is very vast as well as my confidence in theory and the history of it all. My strongest styles to teach are classical piano and pop music (all kinds), and ...

I highly recommend Charles as a piano teacher. Not only is Charles immensely talented and experienced but he is also a patient and intuitive teacher for our son. I appreciate that he has the expertise as a teacher to make lessons fun for a 10 year old boy but also knows how keep him focused and busy working for an hour each week. So far, Charles has helped our son get a more well rounded piano education that will help him long term. Charles is very professional and has an easy going personality that has been a great match for our family.

Rob was an awesome teacher and even better guy. The lesson environment was comfortable, but always focused and professional. He's clearly a hugely talented musician and has a ton to offer in the way of teaching; perhaps more importantly though, his love of music inspires the student to practice and learn. Very highly recommended.
