About Me

What is more important than my conservatory education and my teaching and performance experiences is my passion for teaching music and my undying belief that anyone can learn to sing, play piano, and read music. I'm a graduate of the prestigious Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship. After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internationally renowned opera star, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College and performance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across the east coast, I found my life's work in 2003 when I began teaching music. I've successfully taught hundreds of different students since 2003, from 5-year-old with special needs, to middle-aged professional opera singers, to 65-year-old doctors of music. I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and enriched hundreds of singers and prepared many to win competitions, musicals, pageants and auditions. Having both taught myself piano and received formal training at a conservatory has prepared me to teach almost anyone how to play. The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sigh-treading has benefited my students at every level.

*** Lesson Details ***
In the lessons that I teach, I'm laid back, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate. For piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire. In my voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight-singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music. Parents are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide an acoustic guitar to bring to voice lessons. I expect my piano students to have a piano, an organ or a keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching classical, pop and musical theater singing, classical and pop/rock/chordal style piano, and sigh-treading, including solfege syllables. I enjoy using Estelle Liebling as my voice method and Hanon for piano technique. I also have coursework in jazz and pop theory and songwriting from Westminster Choir College.

Subjects Taught

Flute, Music Performance, Music Theory, Piano

About Me

I am a flutist and teacher with over 20 years experience as a performer and 10 years in the classroom and private studio.

Flutists, want to make all-state band next year? I am looking for dedicated, motivated students with a desire to go further with their playing and education.

I also teach beginning level piano students ages 5+.

I have teaching experience in several age groups and areas of music education. Most recently, as a band/choir director in Duval County. I have also taught instrumental music at the elementary, middle and high school levels in my home state of Colorado. Since 1999, my private teaching experience has ranged from beginners of all ages to amateur adults and college music majors.

I currently perform as a flutist in the First Coast Wind Ensemble. Previously, I have served as director and played piccolo for the Cow Boy Band in Idaho Springs, CO, and held the piccolo/3rd flute chair in the Aurora Symphony Orchestra, CO.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal for every student is consistent progress and growth. In our time spent together, we will focus on fundamentals and music theory, however, if there is something that interests you, we will explore that as well!

For the beginning student, within the first 3-6 months, we will begin to discover how to read music and produce a quality sound on the instrument. We'll learn how to play some of your favorite songs and learn some that you do not know also. We will create a practice routine and learn HOW to practice. We will figure out what you really want to learn and achieve that through our lessons as well as your individual practice.

For the intermediate-advanced flute student, we will begin understanding more music theory and different types of scales. Soon, you'll be playing solos with ease and be able to identify patterns in the music. We'll learn about playing techniques, breathing, tone production and musicality! We will also learn performance techniques, how to work with technology, and how to have a great stage presence in front of a live audience. We will then begin learning more challenging music.

For all of my students, it is a journey that is exciting, unique to each individual, and one that we will embark on together!

Because music is a performing art, I aim to coordinate one to two music recitals each year for students who are interested. This is an optional event, but is highly encouraged as part of the learning experience.

*My studio is in a safe, family-friendly home, and smoke-free environment. We have a small, friendly dog-named Kevin. He is low key and very quiet. You may or may not see him at your weekly lessons. We also have a gray cat, but you probably will not see her regularly.

So! What do you say? Shall we BEGIN THE JOURNEY TO MUSICAL SUCCESS? :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide a safe, well-lit, studio space on the first floor of my home. I will have some sheet music, CD's, a laptop computer with a subscription to Smart Music, a metronome, a tuner, and a music stand. You should plan to bring your instrument, music, and a pencil.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide some music and a metronome. I expect students to provide their instrument, music stand, recommended sheet music, tuner, and a metronome.

Although I have a relatively laid-back personality, I expect dedication from my students. Daily practice is a requirement for progress, whether it be breathing exercises, fingering positions, or songwriting. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace, but will continue to be challenged in order to better themselves.

Through personalized lesson plans, I plan on guiding you to mastery of the two most important aspects of musicianship: technique and creativity. Along the way, you will learn basic music theory, how to read music, how to play scales and chords, sight-reading, and popular repertoire, as well as training in improvisation and group performances. And of course, any personal goals you may have will be added to the curriculum, so you can achieve exactly what you want out of our lessons together!

I highly encourage all of my students to bring a notebook, writing utensil, and a recording device of some kind to all of our lessons. For our first lesson, come prepared to answer questions regarding your goals, musical preferences, and any prior experience. Lessons will begin and end on time.

About Me

Hello. I am so excited and delighted to be your piano teacher at Takelessons.com. I can't wait to teach you how to become good and skilled piano players! It is truly a great privilege for me to teach you the skills to make a good musical foundation . One should be able to learn theory and methods easily with me. However, it is interesting to note that as my student you can develop your own artistry and technique as well. These are what I hope to deliver as your teacher ---help you learn the theory, skills, technique and method in a fun and casual environment! Remember ... our goal is to learn as much as we can in every lesson and try to throw any questions you might have during the class. It will be greatly appreciated. To let you know more about myself, at age 5, I started playing the piano and went on to finishing Piano Pedagogy from Saint Louis Music Center and B.S. Mass Communications from Saint Louis University . My career as a music educator started when I taught piano at the Yamaha School of Music. Ten years of classical training me has helped me attain this rewarding career. As a child, I have had the opportunity to be a “finale” performer and an accompanist to many choral groups in school. My musical experiences also include performing in “Café Vasilici”, San Leandro , California , where I can play all styles especially classical music. The ability to sight read is just one of the many endowments I can teach. Others include, an impeccable love for music and a good ear for music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Have you ever started playing piano but got stumped and frustrated with the theory? Then you've come to the right class. I will teach you the keyboard skills and fundamentals you will need to become a successful pianist. I will provide you a step-by-step explanation on how to play the piano. If you need help with the written theory and you want to learn more about how to read and write notes, all you need to do is to enroll in my class. My instruction includes activities that will help you use the musical alphabet to read and write notes on the staff, identify intervals, and write sharps and flats. Not only will I emphasize note reading but I will help you develop a keen intelligent understanding of the musical notes and alphabet. In no time you will be playing the piano or keyboard and most especially read and play any music as you appreciate it!

It takes time and effort to learn how to play the piano and not all are expected to become wizards at it. For the most part, students should practice the piano/keyboard more often than not and just keep up with the course requirements when enrolled in my class. It takes enthusiasm, interest and most of all perseverance to play the piano however, with me you will succeed and be driven to become a good and skilled pianist!
