I am a Board Certified Music Therapist. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Montclair State University, where I studied music therapy with a concentration in piano. I have been a piano teacher for 8 years. I have been playing piano for 16 years, singing in choirs for 13 years, and playing flute for 10 years (mostly band). I am currently studying piano with Mark Pakman.
Music Performances have taken me to Maryland Jazz Festival, NJPAC, Carnegie Hall, Moscow Conservatory, and several other places with bands, choirs, and solo.
Music has also taken me to Nepal, where I worked with children adolescents, and young adults, in a Christian based organization with music and other subjects.

I am a music educator, performer, and student. At the young at of 27 I've has gained many in-depth experiences in the multiple areas of our musical world. I've taken lessons with some of my idols, played venues I had only dreamed of as child, and I am currently managing and performing with my own group MoPhat. With 15 years of experience in playing various musical genres (Jazz, Blues, Rock, Funk, and R&B), l am well prepared to teach aspiring guitarists of all ages and levels.

Guitar studies have been an effective catalyst for learning responsibility, how to communicate clearly, and how to work effectively both in groups and solo. It is these lessons that I wishes to pass down to students through music education. I should also mention that this is good clean fun as well. Playing music is one the greatest gifts one can give to themselves, a family member, or friend. I currently teach 30 private piano and composition students in North New Jersey, and I am consistently inspired by all the progress all my students have made! I made my Broadway debut with the original cast of Disney & Cameron Mackintosh’s hit musical Mary Poppins and became Broadway's second Mary, flying over the heads and into the hearts of Broadway audiences for over 100 performances.  I left that production to join the original cast of the highly acclaimed Broadway revival of Ragtime.  

I continue to cross the country representing Walt Disney Productions in national concert appearances. I have also has appeared on The Today Show, The View, the 2007 Tony Awards Show, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I have sung for the annual Broadway on Broadway Concert in Times Square, Broadway Sings for Toys and the Fred Ebb Awards.   Recently, I was seen at The Maltz Jupiter Theatre as Hope in Anything Goes, and in the title role of the musical, Gypsy, in the premiere production of the new North Shore Music Theatre, as Mary Poppins in the  televised 2010 IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade and the 2011 Walt Disney World Christmas...

As a Music Teacher, my strengths are Patience, Experience and Encouragement. I am a Father of 4 and have had the joy in teaching them Guitar, Saxophone, Basic Theory and more. I have taught at Columbia College Chicago and at School of Rock (NYC/NJ). I currently teach children and young adults how to make simple musical instruments at The Friends of The Family Day Care Center in Mutuchen, NJ as well as producing Creative Sound Workshops at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and various Sound Art Festivals.

Music has been part of my life since the age of three. My first inspiration was my mother, who was a working singer in the 70's. My second inspiration and mentor was my High School Music Teacher, Mr. Wynn, and I am grateful for all he has taught me. I am passionate about teaching and would like to have the opportunity to be as inspirational to my students as Mr. Wynne was to me. As you can see from my resume below, I have been very active in performing and teaching. At the age of 37, I feel even stronger that the choice I made to make MUSIC my career was the absolute correct one. I believe in the Bible principle that it is better to give than to receive. A lifelong musician and songwriter, Ian S has extensive experience teaching guitar and piano to students age 3 and up both as a private music instructor and as a teacher at the Institute of Music for Children. With 25 years experience in guitar and piano, Ian has studied and performed with several award-winning music artists, and has written and recorded over one hundred songs. He plays and teaches a variety of styles on both the guitar and the piano, from classical to jazz to rock. Ian is patient, friendly, and loves sharing the gift of music.

Ian was the guitarist in the Princeton University Jazz Ensemble for 3 seasons, was selected from a nationwide pool of musicians to perform at a special music event at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and was the recipient of the New Jersey Governor's Award in Arts Education for the category of Instrumental Music.
