Other common questions

How to choose the right teacher

Online

Use our online search feature to find music and singing teachers in your area. Search results will show you the location and availability of the teacher, and you'll be able to read about their background and teaching.

Once you have found your perfect match, contact a TakeLessons Student Counselor to book your lessons. The counselor can also answer any questions you may have.

By phone

If you would rather have one of our Student Counselors assist you with finding your perfect lesson, email them or give them a call. Once you provide your zip code, the type of lesson you are looking for, and any other requests you may have, they will be happy to help you find the best lesson plan to suit your needs.

How to select a lesson location

Lessons are taught either at the teacher's studio or in the student's (your) home. While most instructors offer both options, some will only travel to the student and some will only host the lesson in their own studio. Please note that lessons taught in your home typically cost more to help cover the instructor's traveling expenses.

How to choose the right payment plan

Lessons may be booked on a monthly or quarterly basis depending on your preferences. Both plans come with our 100% Money Back Guarantee.

Monthly – Our Monthly plan allows you to pay on monthly basis for the lessons you will be taking the following month. This is dependent on the day of week your lessons take place and the number of those days in the following month that you will be taking lessons. This plan has no long term commitment; you can cancel at the end of any monthly term.

Quarterly – With our Quarterly plan, you are scheduled for 3 months worth of lessons (12 lessons) and you receive the 13th lesson free of charge. If you continue on the Quarterly plan for one year, you actually end up getting one whole month of lessons for free.

How to pay for lessons

All lessons are paid for in advance. This guarantees the selected time slot is reserved and ensures that the instructor is fairly compensated for their time. All payments must be made by the 25th of the month preceding the next month/quarter. For example, a monthly student will pay for June's lessons on May 25.

Lesson payments must be made via major credit card (VISA, MasterCard, or Discover) or E-Check. At this time, we only accept these particular electronic payment methods in order to keep transaction costs low and avoid billing hassles.

You will only pay for the lessons you will be taking in the following month. There is no fixed monthly cost and you do not have to pay for lessons you will not be taking. For instance, if you are on vacation for two weeks one month and will only be taking two lessons instead of four, you will only be billed for the two lessons scheduled.

How to prepare for the first lesson

Once you have booked your lessons the next step is to sign the TakeLessons Student Agreement and fill out the New Student Questionnaire.

The Student Agreement is a standard service agreement that describes TakeLessons policies. Signing of the agreement ensures that all new students understand our business policies and procedures as they are documented.

The New Student Questionnaire allows our instructors to learn a bit more about you before the first lesson. It documents your musical preferences and background, what you are looking to learn and what you already know. After you submit this questionnaire, it is immediately made available to your instructor so that they may prepare accordingly for your first lesson.

After both of these steps are completed, your instructor will call you to introduce themself, welcome you to TakeLessons, and confirm your first lesson details. After the call, the instructor will take all the information they have learned about you and prepare your first lesson to ensure you have an awesome personalized experience.

How to proceed after the first lesson

Your first class should go off without a hitch. Your instructor should show up on time or be present at the start time of the lesson and should have a lesson plan already to go based on your previous conversations. You will continue to take your lesson at the same time each week unless you reschedule, change or cancel your lesson. (see below).

If, for any reason, you are not satisfied with your first lesson, you have our FirstClass Experience™ behind you. Make sure to contact us within 72 hours of your first lesson and we will either find you another instructor or refund you for your entire lesson purchase (including your first lesson).

How to reschedule or change your lessons

Once enrolled, you will work directly with your instructor to handle rescheduling of single lessons. TakeLessons policy is that the student must give the instructor at least 24 hours notice to reschedule a lesson. Changes made with less than 24 hours notice may result in the student losing that lesson.

To make more permanent changes to your lessons, such as changing day/time, lesson duration, or location; you must contact TakeLessons directly. Please note that these changes also require 24 hours notice and sometimes affect the cost of lessons (e.g. longer lessons cost more).

How to stop or cancel your lessons

Although we are always sad to stop a student's lessons, we understand these things happen and we make it an easy transition.

New students

As part of our 100% Money Back Guarantee, if you want to stop after your first lesson, contact us within 72 hours and we'll either find another instructor to suit your needs or refund your entire lesson purchase (including the first lesson).

The cancellation notice must be received before the billing date in order to stop lessons for the next term. For example, normally we would bill on May 25 for June's lessons. If you do not want to take lessons in June then you need to let us know on or before May 24 that you want to cancel. This will ensure that you will not be billed on May 25.

Please note we do not offer refunds on lessons that have been paid for but not taken. If you are not able to physically take the remaining lessons as scheduled, you have the option of saving them for later (you have up to 12 weeks to resume lessons), give them to a friend, or even donate them to underprivileged students.
