To get the most out of your lessons, we recommend that you take one lesson per week. However, we do give you the flexibility of learning at your own pace, so your schedule and the number of lessons you take is entirely up to you! Remember, you always have the option to change the frequency of your lessons as you go along.
Yes. TakeLessons has held their BBB accreditation since 2008.

At TakeLessons, you're not bound by any long-term commitments and with proper notification, you can cancel your lessons at any time.
For new students, as part of our 100% Money Back Guarantee, simply contact us within 72 hours if you want to stop after your first lesson, and we'll either find another instructor to suit your needs or refund your entire lesson purchase (including the first lesson).
For existing students, you must give us notice of cancellation before the billing date in order to stop lessons for your next term. For example, normally we would bill on May 25 for June's lessons. If you do not want to take lessons in June, then you need to let us know on or before May 24 that you want to cancel. This will ensure that you won't be billed on May 25.
Please note: We don't offer refunds on lessons that have been paid for, but not taken. If you're not able to physically take the remaining lessons as scheduled, you have the option of saving them for later (you have up to 12 weeks to resume lessons), giving them to a friend, or even donating them to underprivileged students.
All of our lessons are taught by TakeLessons Certified™ instructors who have each gone through a rigorous interview, background check and training process. Of the thousands of instructors who apply to work with us each month, less than 8% are actually hired, ensuring that we have the best instructors available to offer you an exceptional music lessons experience.
Lesson rates vary depending on the city location and the length of the lesson. Additionally, lesson prices can change depending on whether you choose to take them in your home or at your instructor's studio. Typically, you will find that in-home lessons and longer-length lessons cost more than other lessons.
We don't offer a free trial lesson, however, we're so confident that you'll love your lessons that we offer new customers a 100% Money Back Guarantee. If you take your first lesson and decide that you don't want to continue, we will happily refund the amount you paid INCLUDING the lesson you've already taken.
Your instructor will contact you once your lessons have been scheduled and paid for. During that first call, your instructor will discuss what you are looking to accomplish through your lessons and will answer any questions about the lesson plan that you may have. Additionally, your TakeLessons Student Counselor will be available to answer any other questions you may have about the instructor, lessons, scheduling, and billing.
In order to reserve your time slot, we require payment at the time of booking, which must be at least 7 days before your first lesson takes place.
At this time, we accept payments via Visa, Mastercard and Discover. You also have the option to pay with a debit card.
We don't not accept payment via cash or check.
For your first lesson, we typically recommend that you use one of the instructor's instruments so you can make sure you want to continue on with those particular lessons. If you want to move forward and purchase your own instrument, your instructor will be able to recommend locations in your area where you can buy one for yourself.
We understand that things come up so rescheduling lessons is allowed if you give your instructor at least 24 hours of notice before the lesson is scheduled to occur. Lessons must be made up by the end of the calendar month in which the lesson was originally scheduled, and are subject to studio and instructor availability.
In the event that a lesson is not made up prior to the end of the month, the payment credit for that lesson is forfeited. A maximum of one (1) lesson per calendar month may be rescheduled.
TakeLessons accepts students ages 5 and up for most lessons. Voice students will typically start at a slightly later age (e.g. 8 or 9) since their vocal chords are more mature. Occasionally we will get a student younger than this and will do our best to place them with an instructor that will meet their needs.
Your TakeLessons Student Counselor will determine the nearest TakeLessons instructor and provide you with cross streets and neighborhood landmarks to help you understand where the studio is located. For privacy reasons, we're unable to give out exact addresses prior to booking a lesson. Of course, once you book a lesson, you're provided with the instructor's full contact information as well as driving directions.
Yes, you can change the details of your lessons at any time. Please contact your Student Counselor and advise them of your changes. Be sure that you give them at least a 24-hour notice prior to the lesson you want changed to ensure communication to all parties.
In order to give the instructor enough time to prepare for the lesson, we schedule all lessons at least 7 days from time of booking.
We typically recommend that you take one lesson per week. However, we do give you the flexibility of learning at your own pace, so the number of lessons you take each month is completely up to you.
With our quarterly booking program, you book 12 lessons up front, and get your 13th lesson free. Over the course of the year that amounts to one full month of free lessons!
Our company is headquartered in San Diego, CA, however, we have TakeLessons Certified™ instructors teaching lessons in over 2,800 cities across the United States.
Unlike a referral service where anyone can join, TakeLessons contracts with each and every teacher after a thorough application and interview process. Each of our teachers is TakeLessons Certified™, so you receive an exceptional lesson experience each and every time with a safe and qualified teacher.
At this time, we don't offer family discounts. If you have multiple family members interested in taking lessons, we'll still need to create an individual lesson schedule for each student. This allows the teacher to prepare for each lesson individually and create separate lesson journals for each student. If you're able to book the lessons consecutively, you'll only be charged for one travel fee, instead of one fee per lesson.
Our booking policy is flexible, so you're only charged for the lessons you're planning on taking each month. If you plan on going on vacation, you can simply add the dates you are unavailable to your vacation calendar, and we'll automatically skip scheduling and billing for those lessons. This way, you're in full control of the number of lessons you take each month. However, remember to update your calendar or give us 24 hours to re-schedule a lesson, or you'll be billed for the lesson you missed.
Each TakeLessons student is unique, and so is your lesson plan. You'll work with your instructor to develop a lesson plan suited to meet your specific goals. As long as you continue to take lessons, you will learn exactly what you set out to learn.
The amount of lessons you take depends on your specific goals, how often you are able to practice, and how often you take lessons. Some students take lessons for months; some for years. Some of the more serious students take lessons on and off throughout their entire lives. You ultimately make that decision based on what you want to accomplish.
The great thing is…you control your own results! If you put effort into your lessons, you'll definitely see improvement. After each lesson, your instructor will send you a Lesson Success Journal™. This journal will show you exactly what you covered in the prior lesson, what you did well with, and what you should practice for the next lesson. You can use this journal as a guide to track your progress throughout the course of your lessons.
