Hello! I'm Justin, a classically trained Baritone with an emphasis in operatic singing. I have earned my Bachelors degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point, where I have appeared in various operas, and performed many recitals. I am currently in the process of preparing my final recital for my Masters Degree in Opera Performance at the University of Minnesota. In addition to a semi-regular recital schedule in my undergraduate work, I have played the roles of Papageno in The Magic Flute, Marcello in La Boheme, Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, Marco in Gianni Schicchi, and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night's Dream. I had the unique opportunity to work as a Studio Artist for the first two seasons of the Mill City Summer Opera. I am the Bass Section Leader at Central Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, MN.
As a composer, I have completed a wide variety of pieces, from full Orchestral works, to string quartets, from 12-part choral pieces to art songs. Most notable of my compositions is my Canticle No.1 for SATB chorus, which was marked for consideration at the UW-Stevens Point Choral Composition Competition.

I am a professional Opera Singer, in Minneapolis from New York City. While that's my "job title," don't let it fool you. I have also spent a number of years touring with jazz, blues, and rock and roll bands as a pianist and guitarist, so my style comes from everywhere. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance with a minor in Piano Performance from Hope College in Holland, MI, and my Master's in Vocal Performance comes from The Ohio State University. I am a professionally managed singer, and have worked on a number of international operatic stages as a baritone. I have been on faculty at NYU-Tisch School of the Arts, and the New School for the Performing Arts in New York City. I have also worked in Musical Theater as a performer and more recently, a music director/conductor.
Drum, Piano, Clarinet, Flute, Music Theory, Oboe, Percussion, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone
As I child I had an early interest in music, dancing and creative things. I took piano lessons and excelled at my chosen instrument, the flute, in band at school. I continued with my music training at Northwestern College in Roseville, Minnesota and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Music Education in 1992. I worked for 11 years in my profession in various settings before I took a break to start my family. My experience includes teaching students in classroom general music, choir, band, piano lessons, and school plays/musicals. I spent six years at a private school (grades K-8), three years at a charter elementary school and 2 years at a public elementary school. Also, since graduating in 1992 I have spent a total of 16 years teaching private lessons both at Hovland Conservatory of Music and in my home. Along the way I further broadened my background by accompanying church choirs and congregations, playing for weddings, and volunteering to lead children’s music time at church.
I love music of all kinds and have a strong belief that everyone should experience the joy and power of it in his or her life. It is very rewarding for me to help students develop their skills as they discover a meaningful way of self-expression using a universal language. Teaching music is something I love to do and I know that fact reflects to my students resulting in an enjoyable experience for them as well.
Music comes from our souls and is an incredibly passionate form of expression. When individuals perform for people, including a teacher, they put their confidence and abilities and imperfections out to be seen. That's why it is important for students to feel safe and confident in their instructor, something you will find in our teacher-student relationship.
Jason has been teaching acoustic, electric, and bass guitar for 8 years. Jason's passions lie in folk, blues, rock, and indie music, and he loves to share that passion with his students in an encouraging and patient environment. Communication is key in a learning environment to ensure that students are working and progressing toward their goals. He has given lessons to students from age 7 through 75, and understands that each student has a unique interest and skill set to be developed. Music would be pretty dull if everyone was the same, wouldn't it?
Jason has been a singer/songwriter out of the Twin Cities for the past 8 years and has played in venues all over the world. These include coffeeshops, events, and churches in Minnesota and go as far as various establishments in Guatemala. His debut album was released in 2007 and he has been a part of numerous projects since that time. Jason has also had the privilege of taking intensive blues lessons with Michael May and vocal lessons with Helen Lapakko.
