Biography: Teaching Experience and Philosophy
Morgan began teaching piano 7 years ago and has
since then taught a number of students ranging from very young
beginners to adult beginners and intermediate students. Although she
regularly teaches in the classical tradition, Morgan is passionate
about finding what excites each student and is committed to connecting
each student with music that will inspire them, help them grow, and add
joy to their lives.
"Music is a living breathing entity and I believe
it is very accessible to anyone with the desire and the time to
practice and study it. Since each individual is different and we all
like different kinds of music, I really like to find out what kind of
music makes one excited about the learning process and help the student
set their own goals. 'Learning' and 'fun' are two words that can and
do go together. I am here to help you achieve your best." - Morgan
Other Musical Endeavors
Morgan is also a pianist/singer/songwriter in the
alternative experimental rock genre and regularly performs. Her first
full-length album entitled 'Stranger in the Mirror' was released
January 7, 2009 under her own label Silver Chord Records, LLC. On July 1,
2010 she released 'Destiny, Save Me,' a double-disc release with a 7-track EP
and a DVD with behind the scenes footage of her recording in a Nashville
Music Row studio. Morgan established Silver Chord Records in January 2007
as a music company that encompasses teaching and songwriting services as
well as record sales and performances. Because of this experience and her
ability to see long-term goals to fruition, Morgan is able to inspire students of
any age to accomplish their dreams and never give up on something they
want to achieve.
Morgan has been a lifelong student of music. At age 3, she began playing piano, and started lessons at age 5. For the majority of her youth, she took lessons at The Greensboro Music Academy (now The Music Academy of North Carolina) under Freddie Chilton. While at the Academy, she participated in many national, regional, and state competitions and would like to provide similar opportunities for students to aid in their growth. She graduated with honors from The University of North Carolina's School of Music in December 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Minor in English. There, she studied piano with Dr. George Kiorpes. While at the University, Morgan took several classes on Music Theory, Piano Pedagogy, and Piano Literature.
Morgan is also able to teach drums, singing lessons, music theory, and songwriting. She began lessons on drum-set at age 16, and went on to perform in concert band and in the drumline at Grimsley High School where she played quads. In college, Morgan was a member of The University Band and was section leader during her senior year under Mark Norman. For drum instruction, students must have a set at their home and take lessons from their home.
As far as voice instruction, Morgan specializes in helping people find their own voice. She is great with musical theatre students or students wanting to build confidence in their own abilities in regards to pitch, timbre, and emotion. If you are interested in voice lessons with Morgan, please contact a TakeLessons advisor to help decide whether Morgan is the correct fit for your musical goals. I also encourage you to listen to the song samples. Morgan is both performing piano and singing (and is also the songwriter).
*** Lesson Details ***
I primarily use Alfred and Bastien piano methods for beginning students. I am more organized than I am strict. I try to make lessons fun, but if I see a student has not practiced for several sessions, I will bring that to the students and parents attention. Without practice, even a very gifted student will not see results.
After 3-6 months, a beginning student should expect to have general music theory knowledge and will have learned 10-15 short songs. In piano, students will work on how to place their hands on the keys, proper posture at the keyboard, the basic hand positions for beginning songs, and will learn a few scales. Late beginner and intermediate students should expect to focus more on longer-term study of specific pieces or songs we have decided on. These pieces involve more study and you should expect to learn 3-5 pieces/songs within 3-6 months as a late beginner or intermediate student.
For beginning drum students, we will focus on basic rhythm and will learn how to read drum tablature. A drum student will be instructed to pick out 3-5 of their favorite songs and we will work on them. Difficult songs will be modified for beginning students so they will still be able to learn and play along to their favorite song.
For vocal students age 18 and up I suggest that they read 'Finding Your Own Voice' to aid in our work together. I will have the student pick out several songs they would like to learn to sing well and we will work on them as long as they are within the level of ability for the student. More advanced songs can be learned after mastering basic elements.
*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a keyboard in my home studio that I use for lessons (songwriting, piano, music theory, and singing).
I do NOT have a drum-set in my home studio, so I must travel to drum student's homes.
*** Specialties ***
I use Alfred and Bastien piano methods the most when teaching. I usually teach on a classical basis, but teach to suit each individual students needs. I can also teach in the rock genre. I am able to teach music theory and songwriting. Songwriting is a great passion of mine and I have lots of experience there.
Broadway Singing, Guitar, Music Theory, Organ, Piano, Singing
I graduated from UNC-G with Bachelor of Music in Music Education. i studied piano and voice in college and I have taken necessary time to learn the organ and guitar as well.
Teaching since 1984.
Instruments that I teach: piano, voice (singing), guitar, and organ.
The first step is to meet at my home studio and discuss your interest in an instrument.
Sometimes during the meeting, students change their minds. For example, a student wants to play piano initially but switches to voice. You know what? That's OK. Just get started-don't put it off. If you really want to learn anything-you will find a way. It's that simple! I am from Greensboro and firmly established here. I 'm married with two teenagers. I am not going to quit on you! Just get going!
*** Lesson Details ***
I am laid back and patient. People (young and older) take lessons because they want to feel good. I will certainly encourage and guide you along the path. I use the Alfred Prep Course for piano students because it is easy and fun. I utilize other methods in my curriculum, too. You will learn to read music and be able to play piano pieces with both hands, if you consistently practice a little each day.
