Thanks so much for taking the time to inquire about studying music with me.

Music and studying music has always been a passionate experience for me. I have been so blessed with the teachers and fellow musicians in my life. You should realize that your study of music may start with me, but it will last your entire lifetime. I'm originally from California. I have performances degrees from the Grove School, as well as San Diego State University.
I currently reside in New York City where I get the chance to play with some many great musicians. I have performed in great jazz clubs in New York, on Broadway, and performing arts centers across the country. I'm currently playing in many great performing ensembles. I am a music therapist and instructor and I truly love it. I treat the educative setting much like the therapy setting: fostering an atmosphere of creativity, support, relaxation and fun. I don't put any pressure on my students. I take their lead in terms of how fast they want to go, how much material they want to cover, and how much practicing they want to do at home. I know from experience that as time goes on, practicing will become a pleasure and not a chore.

As a voice teacher, I want to help my students settle comfortably into their own musicality by showing them the building blocks of a solid technique, drawing particularly from the things that helped me grow as a vocalist. I want my students to feel strong in their body, comfortable and relaxed in their breath, and confident in their performance.

I have been teaching piano for almost 40 years. I have a NY state music teachers license, a masters in music therapy from NYU, and a bachelors in Music Education and AFFA certification.
I try to keep the student self-motivated by using music that the student likes, as well as covering the basics. I use props which can be internalized by the student and gradually removed. For example, using stick-on letter names for the notes for a beginner and then removing them one at a time when the student feels ready.
I am friendly and very easy going; I'm not a disciplinarian. If a student doesn't practice for some reason, we practice together at the next lesson. If a student doesn't want to practice at all, I can be very creative in motivating them. I don't believe in parents forcing their children to practice, because this tends to turn the child off. I began my musical journey at the tender age of four and see no end in sight! Though I may only be 20, I already have years of performing and professional experience under my belt. I have performed on drums for all kinds of groups and acts, from small jazz combos, to singer/songwriters, to heavy metal bands. I have played and gigged on percussion in classical ensembles, concert bands, percussion ensembles, and for musical theater productions. I have also performed extensively with groups on both guitar and keyboards. I have been lucky enough to share the stage with many great musicians including Tom Chapin and the Chapin Sisters, Erik Lawrence (Levon Helm Band), Larry Mckenna, and Peter Brendler.

I have been studying music for eight years now. Having come to music rather later in life than most, I find that I am more empathetic to the perspective of the beginning student than many teachers. I spent the Summer of 2009 teaching music fundamentals to groups of severely physically and mentally disabled children of all ages. Since then I’ve completed my Bachelors degree in Music, and have taught privately to several students.
To me, music is above all about transformation; yes, beautiful sound transforms our experience of the environment, but learning an instrument transforms the very way a student learns. Learning to play an instrument is an experience of training one’s nervous system to gradually act and respond in new ways, and that kind of persistent, focused, training is applicable to anything.
I also believe that playing music should be fun and cathartic.

Jason received his Bachelor of Music from UMKC Music Conservatory and went on to receive his Masters Degree in Music Performance at the Rudi E Scheidt School of Music where he studied with Lily Afshar. Jason has won several competitions including the "Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Competition" and has performed at various festivals including the Piccolo Spoleto festival in Charleston, South Carolina. He currently received an Artist Diploma from SUNY Purchase with Frederic Hand. Jason is passionate about teaching guitar to all ages. He has received Suzuki guitar training at the Frank Longay Conservatory of Guitar and is qualified to teach the method to children as young as three years old and older.
Jason is equally as proficient in Rock/Metal as he is in Classical and World music styles. He has studied rock music at various institutes such as the "National Guitar Workshop" in New Milford Connecticut.

I am a professional guitarist with a background in jazz and classical music. I was born and raised in Springfield, IL where I studied piano, violin, and guitar from a young age. In high school and college I played in several rock and folk bands in addition to my classical and jazz studies.

After earning my Bachelor of Music in Classical Guitar Studies in 2005, my wife and I moved to New York City. Since then, I have taught and performed regularly and earned my Master of Music in Jazz Performance. I have taught a wide array of students ranging in age from 5 years old to 70 years old.

I have a great passion for music and music education and love sharing it. I have had parents tell me that their children have become more social at school and showed drastic improvement in their grades as a result of our lessons.
