About Me

I've studied music at Portland State University, and am well dug into the Portland music scene. I teach you how to turn basic chords and strumming patterns into your own musical ideas, as well as learning your favorite songs. I have experience teaching students how to play most any song in front of family and friends, or with others. Students will get real music theory training as well as advanced guitar techniques. I usually teach students to sing and play the songs in order to help students work on melody and chord structure at the same time.

About Me

"Cole, you are destroying my son's summer video game aspirations."

-Kathy Majidi

For a over decade, Cole R. has been dedicated to music education, community development, and youth mentorship. As an educator Cole has taught, designed, and supervised unique and highly acclaimed curriculum in music education, outdoor leadership, and youth empowerment.

Raised in Newport, Oregon, Cole began learning to play guitar at the age of eight. During his teenage years he would travel to seek the tutelage of guitarists including Dan Balmer, John Stowel, Tommy Emmanuel, & Jeff Peretz. He left Newport to pursue his education at the University of Oregon and received a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies in 2007. Shortly after, he relocated to Portland, Oregon to continue his education, this time in Music. Under the supervision of Darrell Grant, Jeff Putterman, and Alan Jones, Cole received a Bachelor of Arts in music with a focus on Guitar, Composition, and Music Technology from Portland State University in 2011. During this time he supervised the Audio Engineering Program (Portland State Professional Sound) at PSU where he produced over fifty live musical performances annually while training student audio engineers in a hands-on environment.

Cole’s work as an environmental advocate and outdoor educator has always run parallel to his passion for music. With the aim of improving and maintaining the health and beauty of our beloved Northwest, he has coordinated numerous events including cleanups of the Rouge, Willamette, and Sandy Rivers, written multiple grants for environmental advocacy groups, and has led over one hundred wilderness trips for youth and adults from highly diverse backgrounds. Cole has had the pleasure of working with such great youth and environmentally focused organizations as Culture Jam!, the PSU & U of O Outdoor Programs, All Souls Community Center in New Orleans, and The International School in Switzerland. Cole has been actively certified as a Wilderness First Responder since 2004.

In late 2011, Cole was hired by Portland Parks and Recreation as Coordinator of the Teen Environmental Adventures Program and dedicated himself to providing Portland’s Youth with opportunities to become involved with environmental awareness and immersion. In this position, Cole developed many partnerships with local community agencies including Hacienda, ROSE Community Development Corporation, IRCO, Volunteers of America, Latino Network, and the Portland Bhutanese and Nepali Refugee community to provide hundreds of hours of environmental education, job-training, academic support, and long-term youth mentorship programming for these groups.

In 2013, he voluntarily left his position with the City of Portland to focus more directly on teaching, composing, and performing music through the founding of Pacific Guitar Studio (PGS). Through PGS, Cole aims help people find the musicianship, mentorship, and creativity that they seek though providing individual lessons, coaching ensembles, and providing school-break youth music camps.

Cole R. looks forward to working with you or your student and helping guide them to a deeper appreciation and understanding for what it means to be an artist and musician.

"Cole inspires quietly through example and cares deeply about the young people he works with. His goal is to figure out how to make each individual shine, excel, and feel empowered and this he does!"

-Robin Bernardi, Director, Culture Jam

I can assist you with your musical goals. I encourage students to find their own musical voice. We accomplish this through study of technique, repertoire, music theory, and more. I believe that there is no one method to finding one person's creativity or to unlocking their musical self. Instead of teaching a per-determined course I develop an education plan based on the students individual needs.

Experienced Music Teacher

I have taught guitar for over ten years and I treat teaching as a profession and take great pride in watching my students develop. I take time to prepare for each lesson to make sure that I am tailoring the experience to the individual student's needs.

Experienced Youth Worker

In addition to teaching music I have spent the last ten years working with youth age 8 through 18 at numerous and varied programs including Portland Parks & Recreation, Culture Jam, & The American School in Switzerland. Teamwork, self-empowerment, integrity, & problem-solving are all part of the youth music curriculum that I teach. Here are some quotes from my past youth programs:

"Each day was my favorite because I got to be Cole and the other instructors. You guys were awesome and I loved being here with you. You guys encouraged me to the point even when I didn't feel well I still came."

-Alli, Jr. G.R.U.N.T. Participant age 13

“Dina and Cole are the best teachers ever. Actually, the staff from the past two weeks has been the best teachers I've ever had. They are nice and are really fun.”

–Joey, Jr. G.R.U.N.T. Participant age 14

"Cole has been teaching my 9 year old grandson, Noah, guitar for the last few months. Knowing how to play the guitar and knowing how to teach the guitar are two different things. Cole excels in both. His ability to motivate and inspire have allowed Noah to progress in a more than satisfactory manner. Noah looks forward to his weekly lesson and enjoys his time there even if it is demanding. Cole mixes learning to play the guitar with learning to read music which are providing the foundational skills Noah needs. I would recommend Cole as a teacher as he is very competent and I would be happy to speak to anyone considering using Cole as and instructor."

-Bob Potter

"Cole is a very organized, diligent, motivated, and passionate teacher who has subbed for my own classes (Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade) several times. He has never had any difficulty following the notes or lesson plans that I left for him, but more importantly, he took the initiative where necessary to create his own assignments and projects for the students. I was very impressed at the way he was able to boost their confidence and spur their creativity. Reports back from the class itself, as well as from the other faculty, were uniformly positive. I would not hesitate to contact Cole about subbing in the future, and I believe he would be an excellent addition to any school."

-Andrew Durkin, Music Educator

"Cole R. is not only an extraordinary guitar player, but he also has the patience and understanding that a great teacher needs. His teaching style is gentle and responsive. He cares about his students as people and guitarists. He understands the difficulties that beginning guitar students face and challenges that advanced students must overcome. He is knowledgeable about music theory but also knows how to shred a rock or jazz tune. I highly recommend Cole as a teacher to any level of guitarist."
