I graduated from the Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. Currently, I am an active member of the Music Teachers' Association of California. Also, I have fifteen years of teaching experience. My specialty is working with young children both in preschool and elementary school level. My goal in instruction is to teach students the enjoyment and appreciation of music, and at the same time to obtain the technical skills to reach their potential.  My goal for all of my students is to establish a strong musical foundation to meet their goals.  
 
       I enjoy teaching and seeing my students make progress in their music study. I use the Piano Adventure textbook which is a fun way for children to begin their music journey. I teach music theory, sight-reading, rhythms, and performance skills. Students are encouraged to participate in the MTAC Branch Recital and CM certification program every year which is an excellent way for students to set goals each year.

I am a highly experienced and qualified piano teacher, teaching all ages and levels from beginner to advanced. I have proven success in taking students up to the top level of the ABRSM exams, and I am a member of the California Music Teachers Association.

I have been giving weekly individual piano and theory lessons for many years, presenting many for the ABRSM grade examinations. I am from the wonderful city of New Orleans where music is as big a part of life as breathing. I began playing flute at the age of nine and later, while in high school, began playing oboe as well. My dad is a professional musician, so naturally I grew up around music, drums and percussion. Music has always been a passion of mine since as long as I can remember.

My most recent accomplishment has been the completion of my undergraduate education at UCLA where I studied ethnomusicology which is the study of the relationship between music and culture.

I have a good knowledge of drums and classical percussion but my specialty is in hand percussion, particularly percussion instruments from Cuba and Brazil. I have a great knowledge in the styles of music from these regions; salsa, rumba, Afro-Cuban, samba, Afro-Brazilian, so if you seek knowledge of these styles, then I'm your guy! I started playing guitar at the age of 17. Before playing guitar I started playing clarinet and piano. Finally settling on guitar as the instrument preferred, I was introduced to jazz blues guitarist Mark Stefani creator of VisonMusic.com. Under Mark Stefani's teaching, I was able to grasp a full concept of music. In the mid to late 70's I went on to play with Bay Area local bands such as Hot Sizzling Soul Band, Grand Theft Soul Band and HP Riot Band. In the 80's I formed a group named Mellow Magic consisting of Myself - Guitar, Marvin D. -Vocals and Bernardo B. - Sax.

I am a classically-trained opera singer. I have a Bachelors and Masters in Vocal Performance and Vocal Pedagogy (teaching), and have sung professionally in the U.S. and Europe. I have sung Opera, Operetta, Musical Theater and Concerts, as well as choral and cantorial singing. I have been a finalist and winner of vocal competitions in both the United States and Europe.
I have been teaching voice since 1980, and have worked with all ages of students. I have also directed and designed for musical theater and opera. Because I love singing, I want to bring that to my students as well, whatever kind of music they want to sing.

In addition to music, I also teach English (ESL), Accent Reduction, German, U.S. & World History. I have my CBEST Credential And ESL Certification. I do private tutoring and teach classes.

I have been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. I have been a teacher and conductor since high school, and am very excited to take on more students through takelessons!. I have studied piano since I was five, and trombone since I was ten. My training in both instruments began in classical music, and I have been a jazz player for many years as well. My music training was always deeply personal--I was lucky to have wonderfully accommodating teachers who adapted their teaching to my learning style, and emphasized musicality above all else. I aim to provide the same combination of skill-building and personal development through my lessons.
