About Me

A percussionist with 18 years of professional performing experience and 12 years of instructing experience, I am passionate about cultivating a love for music with as many as possible. I have studied with Stanton Moore, John Scofield, Dennis Chambers, and currently a student of Mark Guiliana. As an educator, I have curated many specialized lesson programs for students of all ages on stick control, syncopation, brush work, independence and linear exercises and technique, covering many styles including jazz, funk, rock and R&B. Creativity is essential; adaptability is paramount.

Studying Music Performance at the University of Anchorage, Alaska, and currently attending Borough of Manhattan College for Music Education, I have also worked at the Seattle Drum School and have personally been invited to perform and talk for the Power Chord Academy Rock Camp for kids, as well as appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, MTVU'™s The Dean's List, and the 2008 MTV Campus Invasion Tour.

"Be a musician, not a drummer." I will never forget this advice Jojo Mayer gave me years ago. Sure, I can teach you slick rock beats and pocket grooves, but learning how to APPROACH the kit under particular contexts will take you so much further in your musical career. My teaching style is paced and relaxed and you have the option to play in my newly renovated studio in Gowanus, BK or in my in-home studio in Windsor Terrace, BK. We play. We listen. We have fun!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Gretsch Renown Maple kit, Gretsch Catalina Jazz Mahogany kit, Assortment of Sabian and Zildjian cymbals, along with many auxiliary percussive and melodic toys.

Paul W. Brooklyn, NY

About Me

As a teacher (and also father) Paul finds great joy in sharing his experience and insight with the next generation of creative musicians. For many years, he has taught drummers and percussionists of all ages and levels in academic settings as well as privately. He has also taught workshops and masterclasses at several renowned venues and music conservatories while touring with bands throughout Europe (Royal Academy of Music, London UK; Hull University, Hull UK; Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood, Paris FR).
Playing music has always been a part of Paul's life. Growing up in a family of musicians, he started playing cello at age 6 and he's been playing drums since age 8. After an extensive classical tutelage at the Music Conservatory in Esch/Alzette (Luxembourg) and at various music workshops throughout the world, he completed both undergraduate and graduate studies at Manhattan School of Music, learning from the likes of John Riley, David Liebman, Samir Chatterjee & Michael Abene.
Paul has since been able to make a name for himself among the local and international music industry as an accomplished drummer and forward-thinking composer. He has performed at several international festivals (North Sea Jazz Festival) and at some of the world's most prestigious jazz clubs in the US and overseas. Paul has appeared alongside such emerging stars as David Binney, Linda Oh, Ambrose Akinmusire, Will Vinson, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lage Lund, Mike Moreno and Tim Collins.

Whether my students are young or old, taking lessons as a hobby or wish to pursue a career in music, I tailor my lessons to meet each individual student’s needs and expectations.
I have a lot of fun teaching and I want you or your child to have fun during our lessons.
My students learn music in the most natural and intuitive way possible. I try to build on what the student already likes, listens to and has a passion for. I encourage students to bring their favorite songs and we usually end up working with those. I also like using songs by The Beatles as they provide a perfect (fun and familiar) platform to learn many different aspects of drumming and musical performance.
In addition to being a drummer and percussionist, I have a strong background in music theory and I want to make sure my students not only know how to play their instrument, but also become familiar with reading and writing music.
After a few months in the studio, you or your child can expect to have a better understanding of music and have acquired the basic tools and techniques which will allow you to play your favorite pieces of music.

I performed in virtually in every major jazz club in Paris (New Morning, Duc des Lombards, Sunset, Petit Opportun, Manhattan Jazz Club, Sunset), in various Jazz Festivals and I also played in Germany and Italy.

At the same time I started teaching regularly in four conservatories (Arcueil, le Pr-St-Gervais, Epinay Sous Snart and Chevilly) for more than 10 years until I moved to New York. I taught private lessons for drums and percussion, and also numerous workshops for kids, teens and adults.

After a lesson with the legendary Jimmy COBB in 1992 during a visit to the United States, I decided to move to New York. I was finally able to do so in 2000, and I have been living and performing here since then.

About Me

Hey there! I'm originally from Salzburg, Austria. I have been playing drums for over 20 years (teaching for about 8 years) and am currently playing professionally around the NYC area.
I graduated from the A.Bruckner University in Austria in 2006 with a degree in jazz performance & didactic studies w/ great drummer and composer Doug Hammond and later Jeff Boudreaux. Other drummers I've been studying over the years include Greg Hutchinson, Jonathan Blake, Jim Black and many more...
After one year of master studies I decided to move to New York City in 2010. Having been established in Europe (I toured in over 20 countries) I sought new challenges; plus the big apple had always had a very high attraction to me. In NYC I founded my own group "Wayfarers" that I recorded and album and did two international tours with.
I am currently working with artist of many styles including Jazz, Hip Hop, R'n'B, Rock and Singer/songwriter projects and tour the US and Europe a few times a year. I enjoy teaching very much and I think it is important to pass on some of the knowledge that I was lucky enough to have been given.

*** Lesson Details ***
It all depends on the student. My maxim is to help the student to get better at what he or she wants to get better, i.e. what style of music the student likes and wants to play. Of course I focus on the basic techniques and the ground-work every drummer needs to be able to have some "freedom" around the instrument. But aside of that, every student will be approached individually - that includes the pace, of what I ask for every week and how strict or laid back I will be about it. I use some drum-schools but mostly try to always work with music/recordings or at least in a musical context, so that there is always the connection to what is the most important thing I want to prepare you for - the bandstand. the rehearsal w/ your friends. The recording studio. A jazz session. And of course - tho hard work is necessary - it should always make fun to make and learn music!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room situation with drumset, additional snare drums for playing together with the student. Play-along and recording devices.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I'll bring sticks and if necessary drum-pad, beginner students should at least have a drum-pad or snare drum; ideally of course an acoustic or electronic drumset should be available at the students place.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz, Hip Hop, R&B, Rock, Folk, Classical, Marching Drums/Percussion

In 3-6 months students will learn proper techniques for several stroke types (Single, Double, Buzz) and many drum set grooves. Students will also learn fills and will begin expressing themselves musically on the drums. Students will also have the opportunity to experience and learn from playing drums with another musician as I will accompany them on Bass or Keyboard. In addition, students will learn to read and perform Percussion and Drum Set music.
More advanced students will focus on sound production (getting great sounds out of drums or percussion instruments), expanded reading (introduction of more complex technical and rhythmic concepts) and improvisation.
