My daughter loves taking lessons with Athena. She takes the lessons seriously and expects the same of her students. My daughter is learning a lot and loving it. Athena has helped her feel positive about piano and motivated to practice and learn.
Andrew S. New York, NY

Classical guitar is the first style that I studied. I began playing classical guitar when I was 9 and continued seriously studying that style until I was 20. Currently, I focus mostly on Jazz, Electric Guitar, and Acoustic guitar and so I only accept Beginning and Intermediate students in Classical Guitar.

Classical guitar study includes concepts such as:
- Fingerpicking
- Reading Notation
- Technical Fundamentals
- Dynamics
- Articulation
- Music Theory for more advanced students
- Repertoire based on classical music

About Andrew

Andrew S. began playing the classical guitar at the age of 9, electric guitar at the age of 14, and jazz guitar at the age of 16. He holds a Bachelors degree in Jazz Guitar from UNC Greensboro (2011) and a Masters of Music in Jazz Guitar from the Manhattan School of Music (2014). While in graduate school at MSM, Andrew played in the Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Philharmonic, and the Brazilian Combo.

As a music teacher, he has served as the Head of the Guitar Department at the True School of Music in Mumbai and as a faculty member with MSM Sunday Program, the MSM Outreach Program, and the Roanoke Jazz Institute. He also substitute teaches for the MSM Precollege.

Following a summer of teaching and performing around Mumbai Andrew has returned to NYC. Currently, Andrew is performing ...

I've taken lessons from Albert for several years. Albert is an awesome teacher and VERY patient. He is fluent in teaching many styles of music from classical, funk, jazz, rock, county, finger style, blues, metal, ear training etc. He teaches theory and how to apply it to guitar in a way that is easy to understand. He also teaches how to read standard notation, as well as tablature. Most guitar teachers these days are just teaching tab. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Albert to anyone of any age looking to learn how to play guitar, or someone who is working on getting to the next level. Albert is a cut above the rest!

Marco O. Sunnyside, NY

I studied classical for two years as an undergraduate student.

About Marco

I started playing guitar seriously at the age of 12 and have been a guitar teacher for 22 years. My first influences were rock and metal. In my later teens, I became very interested in other music genres such as jazz, fusion and classical. I began my formal music education as a Classical Guitar performance major, ultimately obtaining a Masters Degree in Music Composition from the Queens College Aaron Copland School of Music.

The road I have taken with music has been paved with many unexpected twists and turns. Throughout my many years of learning and making new discoveries, I have now arrived at a point where I am able to productively incorporate knowledge from various experiences with music and education into my own creativity and teaching. I never expect to stop learning or ...

I was a student of Marco's for about two-almost three years, and his excitement, love, desire, wisdom and passion for music and teaching is something that can't be described in words. Marco is a teacher that likes to have fun with whatever it is he may be teaching, but he is also very serious about it to make sure his students learn what they want in the best way possible to them. He will encourage his students if they need it and congratulate you every time you complete whatever it is you may have learned from him. I mostly learned techniques/songs from artist's such as Randy Rhoads, Angus Young, and much more from Marco. He will not let you down. He won't give up on you. I would gladly learn from him any time /any chance I'd get.

Marco has been teaching my son how to play the guitar since 2008. I feel that we were blessed having Marco as my son's first teacher. He really understood him and I was brought to tears at his very first recital when I was amazed how much he had learned in just a short few months. He is a senior in HS now and he has a love for the guitar and a passion to learn new music on his own.
Marco is an exceptional teacher who is very patient and understands his students and listens to their needs. He is extremely talented and anyone would be very lucky to have him as their music instructor. I recommend him highly. He is the best!

I studied with Marco in my senior year of high school. I had been playing for about a year at the time. Marco was very encouraging and informative. He was always willing to go the extra mile - whether that meant lending me a book, helping me record for an audition in his home studio, or just giving me an extra 15 minutes of his time. We spent most of our time learning solos from the masters, discussing the fundamentals of music theory, and playing together. When I left for college I had a great foundation to build on. His diverse background makes him a great resource! Thanks Marco!!!
Juan C. New York, NY

I have taught all levels, using the methods of Giuliani, Carcassi and Sor. Also I encourage my students to develop a basic repertoire for performance, a knowledge of theory and fundamentals.

About Juan

New York city based guitarist and composer Juan C. immigrated to Miami, Florida at age 21.
His work speaks a unique language that blends elements from his early musical experiences in Colombia, as a member of various folk, rock (metal ) ensembles, and his studies in East Asian music fueled by travels and interaction with musicians and artists in China and Japan.

Juan’s music has been performed throughout South America, the United States and Asia. Although Juan cannot return to his native Colombia, his string duet, “Famous Librarians” (commissioned by Olivia de Prato and Victor Lowrie, was premiered at the Medellín Conservatory of Music.) His piece for electric bass and keyboard, “Glue Pain Ghost,” a collaboration with video artist, Jane Hsu, ...

Outstanding teacher

I am 35 and this is my first foray into music. I have always wanted to learn to play the guitar and finally got one last Thanksgiving. I tried to learn via online resources but quickly realized one needs hands on personal instruction as one starts out. Juan had great reviews and I decided to get some lessons to get started with him last January. That has been the best decision I could have taken, even better than buying a Guitar! He is a thorough professional who totally understands students needs, limitations, and learning curve. I am a busy professional and am frequently traveling or entertaining business partners. Juan structures my learning according to my interests and time available, and is flexible about scheduling. He is very encouraging and makes a newbie feel comfortable about his bumbling yet evolving guitar skills. If you read his profile on this site, you would understand the thoughtful mental process that he employs to help students reach their individual goals. I would recommend Juan not only as a guitar teacher but a solid individual in all respects.

Outstanding!!!

I have been playing with my guitar for 15 years. I have tried a few teachers and they were ok. But I never felt as connected to wanting to learn and improve as I do with Juan. His approach feels perfect, not aggressive nor placid. Never do you feel out of place even when time doesn't allow one to practice. I didn't just find a guitar teacher but I also found a friend and music mentor.
Andre M. New York, NY

I can help you improve your classical guitar skills.

About Andre

I have been teaching guitar for more than 10 years. I do have great experience teaching kids in the New York area. Nonetheless, I have taught students with different ages (6 to 60!) and with opposite tastes and styles of music. That made me aware of the many possibilities and directions one can take. My experience taught me to adapt to the studentīs goals while being able to communicate the formal methods or strategies that define the understanding of music as a whole. My goal is to ensure the student has a general sense of musicality and at the same is able to gather the right tools to learn and play the music she/he likes.

I have a bachelorīs degree from Berklee College of Music in Guitar Performance and a Masterīs Degree from New England Conservatory in Jazz ...

An amazing teacher

I have heard about Andre M. while I leaved in Boston and have reconnected with him upon my move to NYC. I have been taking Music Performance lessons with him. As an intermediate level pianist, I can say Andre is a very dedicated teacher- he knows how to listen and can identify immediately what needs to be improved.
His knowledge of all kinds of music such as Jazz, Rock, Pop and Classical is impressive and I have recommended him to my friend who was looking for a guitar teacher. I am really happy to have found a teacher like him.

I highly recommend Andre as a professional and knowledgeable teacher.

I'm a professional bass player graduated from Berklee College of Music currently living in New York City. I came to Andre for technical support and improvement of my guitar skills as well as overall orientation to become a more complete musician and educator. I'm truly grateful I found him because I've been growing greatly as a guitar player on stage as well as a composer. He was also very helpful in guiding me for my early education classes and lesson planning. Furthermore, he is a very talented guitarist with a unique sound and that's why I chose him to play on my two children's albums. I highly recommend Andre as a professional and knowledgeable teacher.

Very talented musician and teacher

I have been taking André's lessons on jazz guitar and composition. Being admittedly not the most flexible or easy student, I am impressed at how André makes me work most efficiently, exploiting any strengths I may have and nicely/mercilessly confronting my weaknesses. Seeing him play, or "trading bars" with André, is a great motivation to keep learning toward that impossible level!
