Acting, Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing, Songwriting

About Me

Hi there! Glad to meet you! My name is Max and I am a professional musician currently working towards my Doctoral degree at the University of Miami in Vocal Performance & Pedagogy. My background is in voice, piano, composition, and music theory. I am a seasoned performer, appearing in many different musical settings and concerts from barbershop to vocal jazz to pop and opera. My philosophy as a musician is simple: I study and teach music because I love it! I believe that music teaches us what words cannot and that my job as a teacher is to show my students how music can truly enrich their lives. Most recently, my main focus as a performer has been in opera. I have sung and portrayed many different roles on stage playing all kinds of characters. I've been a villain, a drunk, the plucky comic relief, and the romantic leading man. I also have experience as an accompanist and keyboardist. I took piano lessons starting at age 5 and stayed with my wonderful teacher up until the time I graduated high school in 2002. Since then, I have enjoyed playing both the piano and organ in my church and in the communities where I have lived. My philosophy with piano is the same as with voice: You should LOVE to play music! I also enjoy work as a composer and conductor when I can. If you would like to know more specfics about my working background as a vocal artist and pianist, I am more than happy to share my professional resume. Thanks for your interest in my profile. I know that after a few lessons with me, you will begin to understand how studying music can be so much fun and add to your life! :)

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is very laidback. Since I highly encourage my students to perform music that they like, I strongly encourage them to bring any specific repertoire that they wish to learn to the first lessons so we can discuss goals and come to an understanding of what kind of experience they are looking for. In my piano lessons, I am comfortable with most ages and feel that most students have the most success by starting young. I started at age 5 and was able to learn a lot from a very young age. I highly recommend the Suzuki Piano Method books for my piano students, they are a wonderful way to introduce students to the techniques and methods that are essential for young pianists to learn. For my vocal students, I actually do not recommend taking serious vocal lessons until about the age of 12 or older. Since the vocal apparatus is a part of the body, most students have greater success after they have had a chance to develop a little bit. However, I am open to teaching younger children how to sing, just be aware that most of the focus with younger students will be on music appreciation and becoming more comfortable about music in general. My vocal technique for my older students is classically based, but is versatile enough to transfer over to broadway, pop, and other genres that the student wishes to study. I believe that singing in different genres is simply a question of using different vocal colors, which I will show you how to do. The breathing, posture, and necessary energy and relaxation behind the sound should remain the same in all genres. I am always very open with my students and encourage input from them on how they are responding to the tips I give. If something doesn't work, tell me and we'll figure out another way! After a few months with me, you will feel more confident as a performer and be able to enjoy sharing your new talent with others.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I teach out of a private studio at the University of Miami. There is enough seating for one additional person and I do have a piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide myself and my expertise. I expect my students to have something for them to sing for me in the first lesson, preferably they would also have access to a piano.

*** Specialties ***
I teach a general method, with emphasis on free, easy singing that can transform and adapt to all genres.
