Nicholas K. Merrillville, IN

About Me

Nick comes from a family of four generations of music in the GREEK/Balkan repertoire. He graduated from Columbia College of Chicago with a concentration in Music Composition in December of 2009. Currently teaching and performing professionally, Nick enjoys all styles of music, but has been declared as an "old soul" by many of his friends. He enjoys playing lots of Motown, funk, and jazz, but is proficient in Classical, Rock, and Blues as well. When not playing music (rarely), he is a Board member for the GivingBackPack Foundation which provides school supplies to underprivileged children. Nick's dedication to education is shown through his music and his personal volunteer hours, he feels his diverse background gives his students an advantage to a broader perspective of music and theory.

Barrett H. Flossmoor, IL

About Me

At an early age, I was exposed to a variety of music including Motown, Rhythm & Blues, Rock & Roll, Hip-Hop, Latin, and the Blues. The early influences of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, and Howlin’ Wolf, kept me singing. I held my first concert at age 4, singing songs of the Tempations.

I began playing the trumpet when I was seven years old. So I've been playing for 17 years now. I've been classically trained from the beginning. While in junior high school, I began venturing into the world of jazz, sharpening my lead trumpet and improvisation skills with focused attention and everlasting curiosity.

I attended Homewood-Flossmoor High School and toured Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic as section leader in my school's Symphonic Band and lead trumpet and soloist of our award-winning jazz band.

I then attended the University of Pittsburgh, where Nathan Davis (formerly of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers) is the head of the Jazz Department. This was a priceless environment for me, as it allowed me to form my own musical identity through rigorous scholastic study as well as my own personal study. I had the pleasure of playing with Jazz legends and giants such as Roger Humphries and Sean Jones, and learning from Leon Lee Dorsey (formerly of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers).

Since graduating with a Music, Jazz Concentration Degree, I have been performing as a bandleader and sidesman throughout the Chicagoland area. My trio enjoys regular gigs at Flavor Restaurant, putting on invigorating shows in an intimate setting. I have played with my quartet at Andy’s Jazz Club, as well as with Jim Holman’s group. I've also performed at several Friday night jazz sets in “Trio’s Restaurant and Jazz Club” in South Bend, Indiana, amongst many other venues.

My album, "The New Standard Vol. 1" is also doing well, gaining exposure and popularity.

Along with my performance experience, I have a passion for sharing knowledge and bouncing ideas. Since I have learned from the masters of music, I am well-prepared to guide students toward their own musical identities and goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal, as I said earlier is to guide students toward their own musical identities. This is so important because when a musician is playing or writing the music that they love, the music that naturally comes out of them, they enjoy a deep connection with that music and their audience can feel the music coming straight from their soul. No jivin'... they believe it.

Lessons Include:
Trumpet Conservatory Method

Justin C. Chicago, IL

About Me

My name is Justin, and I am a musician (big surprise). I have been playing the piano for the past 17 years and the trumpet for the past 13 years. My primary emphasis is jazz improvisation, but I have a solid foundation in classical repertoire as well as the basic fundamental techniques of the trumpet and the piano. I am originally from Fresno, California, but I currently reside in the Chicago area. I completed my B.A. in Trumpet Performance at California State University, Fresno in 2011. I also just recently completed my M.M. in Jazz Studies at Northwestern University in June of 2013. I have been performing extensively as a professional musician for the past 10+ years, and I have been teaching privately for the past 5+ years. The variety of musical genres that I perform is quite versatile, so I believe that I can accommodate the differing musical desires of all of my students. My mission is to help you discover who you are as a musician, which, in my opinion, has a strong connection with our personalities and how we interact with others.

*** Lesson Details ***
***NOTE: I am now able to give lessons to those residing in the Evanston/North Shore area!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When we begin our lessons, try to enter in with few expectations and I will do the same; I believe that strict expectations from the beginning can create unnecessary boundaries and conflicts within or between the teacher and student. We will take it a day at a time. All that I know is that I want to help you. I want to discover the things that you would like to do better on your instrument, and push you in a direction of progression so you can more effortlessly express your personality through your music. We will not strive to "make you better" on your instrument, but rather strive to simply make it easier to play. I believe that is a vital distinction to make, and it will make approaching your instrument much less arduous. We will work hard and push our limits every day, but we will relax through the process. My primary goal is to learn as much from you as I hope you will learn from me!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a music stand and any necessary music technology. Students should only need provide something to take notes with and their instrument, as well as an optimistic attitude. I will make sure to bring the latter as well. :)

*** Specialties ***
Jazz improvisation and conceptualizations, classical trumpet literature, trumpet fundamentals, piano fundamentals

Voytek F. Rolling Meadows, IL

About Me

Hi, my name is Voytek and I love music! I currently do over 200 shows a year and in addition to performing as a soloist, I play in 2 gigging ensembles. Thanks to music, I've been able to meet many incredible people and travel all over the world to Germany, New York, Switzerland, Washington DC and the Dominican Republic. My goal is to inspire my students and share with them my passion for music so they can also experience how wonderful and rewarding it really is. Let's rock some jams!

*** Lesson Details ***
While teaching lessons, I like to keep the atmosphere relaxed but productive. I utilize many proven traditional teaching techniques (for example: scales, theory, exercises, drills and prepared pieces) however, I also try to keep things fresh with fun backing tracks and music theory games to keep students engaged. I am also very flexible and open to suggestions, so I encourage students to ask questions and let me know if they want to learn a specific song or musical concept.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio is equipped with a 76-key keyboard, drum set, music stands, recording equipment and a PA system. Plenty of parking available, either in the driveway or on the street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
In order to teach at a student's home I will need a quiet room/area where we can concentrate on our studies. If the student is taking drum or piano lessons, they will need a drum kit or piano/keyboard. Also, a boombox/CD player may be necessary if we need to play with some backing tracks.

Kellyann W. Bolingbrook, IL

About Me

From a young age, I was enamored with music and blessed to have parents who encouraged this passion by providing me with a variety of lessons. It is a privilege to pass on this love of music through lessons to a new generation of learners!

I have a Bachelor's of Science in Music Education and Sacred Music with emphases in piano and voice from Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, IA, and have taken several graduate level professional development courses that have enhanced my abilities as a musician and teacher.

Throughout my high school and college careers, I was involved in many musical groups, so I know the challenges that accompany the pursuit of excellence and a full schedule. This has given me an understanding of students' needs while maintaining high expectations.

I am a substitute teacher as well, currently working for Plainfield 202 and Valley View 365U, and I have connections with Indian Prairie 204. Because of this, I have completed background checks with the Will County and DuPage County Regional Offices of Education.

Along with teaching, I love using music at church and for fun at home with my husband, Tim. We also enjoy many other activities together like bike-riding, cooking, hiking, camping, and playing with our loveable goldendoodle Max (who stays outside or in a closed bedroom during lessons).

I moved to Bolingbrook in mid-2013 and thoroughly enjoy our friendly neighborhood just north of Independence Elementary School. I look forward to welcoming you to my in-home studio!
