About VOICE: I firmly believe that with the right training, anyone can sing! We all have the instrument built-in after all! Are you tone deaf? I can fix that. Crack on high notes? I can fix that. About PIANO: How often do you sit down at a piano and wish you could just place your hands on the piano and magically create beautiful music? Piano is a challenging skill, but certainly not impossible. Learning to play the piano, even if it's never mastered, is such an incredible joy. Learning piano helps you to improve so many other skills as well, such as singing, any other instrument, and even math!

About ME: After completing my Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at North Park University in Chicago, I moved here to NYC in 2010 to pursue my loves of music, acting, and education. Currently, I work as a Teaching Artist through Wingspan Arts, act in short films, and sing in concerts, operas, and musical theater productions around the city. I have been teaching acting, modeling, voice, and piano to children and adults of all ages for the last seven years. For kids and adults alike, learning either voice or piano, I believe that you learn a lot more, and a lot faster when you feel comfortable and are having fun. With me, you will find an instructor who is patient, professional, motivating, challenging, and above all, encouraging. And fun. Did I mention fun?!

For voice students I like to use a mix of Broadway, Classical, and Popular music, depending on your needs and desires as a singer. I always assign a "teaching song" (a song that is good for training your voice) and a "fun song" (a song of your choice that you would like to sing just for fun!).

For piano students I like to use the Piano Adventures series by Faber & Faber. These are fun musical pieces, most of which are adapted from familiar classical works that have been arranged to teach you a certain technique.

For both, I always incorporate a balance of technique, music theory, and creative interpretation.

For acting students, it completely depends on your goals! We will work on different types of scripts, audition technique, and business skills for getting started in the real world!

Each lesson will likely involve warm-ups, games, reviews, new concepts, rehearsal, coaching, assignments, and rewards.

During our lessons, we will set short-term and long-term goals based on what you want to accomplish as a musician, what you expect from me, and what I feel you should be working on. I believe rewards are definitely appropriate!

Each one of the you has your own unique voice, hands, and ideas of what music means to you. My job is to get to know you and your musical self, and then design exercises and songs that will specifically fulfill your needs as a musician. Skill and technique are extremely important when learning to sing or play a musical instrument, but we must never forget what drew us to music in the first place! While we work on technique, we will also be discussing creativity, and the art of self expression, and have tons of fun in the process!

About Me

Hello!

I am fun, friendly, and outgoing, and I love to teach.

I have been making music since I first picked up a recorder in the 4th grade. Over the years, I've played flute, trumpet, and piano, and sung in choirs, cabarets, musicals, and operas. I recently received my Masters in Music (Vocal Performance) from New Jersey City University where I studied classical voice. Although I am trained classically, I love performing all genres of music, including Broadway, folk songs, spirituals, and jazz. In fact, my Masters thesis explores the convergence of opera and musical theater – these two genres have more in common than you might think!

Sharing music with others is a passion of mine, whether it be through performing or teaching. I firmly believe that anyone can sing! I work with all types of students, both beginners and more advanced singers, from young to old. Voice lessons should be both challenging and fun – in our lessons, we’ll work on developing a healthy singing technique … while exploring some great song literature.

I’m currently singing with a variety of professional choirs in the tri-state area, mostly performing sacred music; I sing with the First United Methodist Church in Stamford where I lead the alto section and perform occasional solos; I chant the evening compline service at the Christ Church in Greenwich, and I also sub for a number of local churches. I am also performing in the community theater production of Oklahoma! at Curtain Call in Stamford, which opens at the end of March. I’m also putting together a cabaret performance with two other singers, where we will perform a number of solos, duets and trios from classical and musical theater genres.

Whether your goal is to get into a college music program, sing a solo at church, be cast in a musical, or just try something new, I can help you succeed.

I've studied with some of the best teachers and coaches in the business, and I apply the same methods to my own students. All you need to improve is motivation and commitment! Each lesson will consist of four parts:

1) The lesson begins with some simple warm-ups to prepare the voice for singing. The vocal cords are very delicate – you need to warm up your voice the same way you stretch before exercising.
2) We then work on some vocalizes, i.e. exercises to improve singing technique. I customize these exercises according to each individual student’s needs.
3) Next, we’ll work on an Italian song. Italian is often called the language of singing, and for good reason! The language lends itself to a smooth, legato style, which requires pure vowels, consistent air flow, and proper support to execute. I insist that all my students work on an Italian aria for technical development purposes … and also to expose them to some of the most beautiful songs of the classical repertoire.
4) If desired, we will next work on a second piece of the student’s choice. This can be a folk song, Broadway, a hymn … whatever is nearest and dearest to the student. I firmly believe that to find joy in music, you must sing something you love.

I conclude each lesson with an assignment of exercises and songs to work on before the next lesson. Based on the student’s current abilities, these exercises may include some music theory, music history, diction, or sight singing assignments.

Now here comes the hard truth – no one ever improved at anything without practicing. If students don’t practice, they won’t see progress. If they don’t improve, they will become frustrated and bored … and ultimately quit. Daily practice is therefore strongly encouraged (although “how long” is determine by age and level of skill).

Students will have the opportunity to showcase what they've learned at an annual recital, held in my home. Your friends and family won’t believe how much you've improved!

I have been performing on stage since I was a child, training in classical voice, piano and acting. About Me

Heralded as "the kind of Despina one hopes for: diminutive, agile and with just the right clear, slender soprano voice." -(NY Times) Nina performed the above role from Cosi Fan Tutte with The Martina Arroyo Foundation. She recently made her Carnegie Hall debut at the Weill Recital Hall with the New York Lyric Opera theater. Nina has performed with Center City Opera Theater, Dell'Arte Opera, Chelsea Opera, Opera Company of Brooklyn and Project Opera of Manhattan. Nina was invited to perform scenes with the Minato Mirai Opera's Co-repertory workshop at the Minato Mirai Hall in Yokohama, Japan in March '08 and January '09.
Outreach experiences include performing the role of Fifi Alsace-Lorraine from the original production of Queen Kong, as well as the role of Hope from the Musical Theater show All That Glitters. Both of these shows were shown in Public Schools around New York city to educate children about music. Nina recently portrayed Gauchito in "Gauchito and the Pony" with the Queens Symphony Orchestra at the Kupferberg Center, Queens College, to educate children about Latin America through music. Her voice can be heard on the award winning film Cherry Bloom (2006, UVphactory, dir. Alexandre Moors) which was shown in various renowned film festivals across the U.S. She has performed professionally at Avery Fisher Hall with the National Chorale, and participated in the chorus of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in the Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall. Nina has also performed in various venues in Italy, including the Basilica of St Francis with the Assisi Music Festival.
Nina received her BM and MM at the Manhattan School of Music. She has been an active teacher in the New York area for several years. Nina has also been a guest Artist at both the Yokohama International School and the Sacred Heart International School in Japan where she gave a master class to their Show Choir and High School Choir. Nina has had the honor of performing the National Anthem for the Memorial Day Parade in Chappaqua. She has had students of all ages in voice and piano, and has a passion for teaching. Voice students have ranged from beginners, to advanced classical, musical theater, and rock singers looking to learn how to sing with a healthy technique.

Depending on age, and level, I am able to mold the student. If it is a child of 6- 12 voice student, I keep it fun, but also teach pitch, if there are pitch problems, breathing, and how to use vowels and diction to make the singing smoother and easier. The older the student, I adjust on how much more detailed I can be. Repertoire also varies depending on the age and what the student is interested in. If the student is purely interested in technique, I let the student choose a song and we work on warm ups and how to apply the warm ups to the song. With Piano students, I am strict, but not mean. I am understanding if the student is stressed out, and will not push too hard. After 3-6 months, voice students usually can sing songs easier with a freer sound, knowing better how to approach high notes, and building their repertoire. Beginner piano students should have learned how to read C position and possibly G position, rhythm and notes.

I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.

Hi there! Whether you're seasoned musical theatre singer looking to build an audition book or a complete beginner wanting to learn the basics of vocal technique and singing in public, then I'd love to be your teacher and help you on your way!

I am an actor, singer, composer, and musician, and I live in New York City. I graduated from the New York University drama program, and studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute and Stonestreet Studios. I've had many incredible teachers over the years who taught me to show up, listen well, work hard, respect everyone, practice your craft, have fun, and love what you do! They inspired me to become a voice teacher myself (both large group and individual), counselor, music director, and instructor.

I have taught a wide variety of musical theatre, elementary acting, music theory, and a cappella classes over the years, specifically at Middlesex Summer Arts Program and at Concord Youth Theatre (in Concord, MA). In these settings, I have focused on giving private instruction to each pupil, no matter what age or experience level. I have also music directed full-length shows, cabarets, and music groups, and worked as a rehearsal accompanist/pianist for musicals, concerts, and voice lessons (such as for Vocal Performance majors at NYU Steinhardt). In addition to teaching and directing, I spent eight years playing the trumpet, and have performed in wind ensembles, orchestras, chamber groups, concert bands, parade bands, and rock groups.

As a actor/singer, I''ve performed in over fifty different musicals both in New York and Massachusetts (my home state), including three Off-Broadway musicals, and been a member of various madrigal groups, full-scale choirs, and a cappella groups. Over the years, I've sung music in almost every genre that exists, from Renaissance to Billy Joel to Armenian to Mozart.

Without those two elements, a rock singer can€™t last a two-hour show, a jazz singer can€™t smoothly improvise through all her registers, and a classical singer can€™t sing those crazy runs eight times in one show.

We'll spend the first half of lessons working on technique, and the second half working on material. We€™ll create a lesson plan together based on your goals, strengths, and difficulties. Feel free to bring in anything you want to work on: audition cuts of songs, choral music for school, solos from your current productions, a cappella music, your current favorite song on your iTunes, whatever you like!

My apartment is a large open studio that is clean and bright with high ceilings (cause no one can sing high notes when they feel claustrophobic!) in Long Island City, Queens. My building is extremely safe and accessible, and I have a huge selection of sheet and digital music on hand for us to draw material from. I have a Yamaha U1 upright piano, and have the ability to make accompaniment tracks for students to practice with at home.
