About Me

I am a recent college graduate from Carthage College in Kenosha, WI with a degree in Music Education. I have been taking vocal lessons for 8 years and been providing vocal instruction and aiding vocal teachers for 6 years now. I am a soprano and can teach both broadway style and operatic voice.

My performance credits include: Dido and Aeneas (First Witch), Little Women (Aunt March), Seussical the Musical (Wickersham), and The Marriage of Figaro (Marcellina).

My awards include: 1st Place Singsational Competition (Spring Grove, IL), 1st Place Lake County Fair Talent Competition (advanced to IL State Fair Competition), 1st place Gurnee Idol 2008, and 2nd Place Waukegan Idol 2007.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students should expect to learn about the vocal chords and how to manipulate them. My philosophy is that without the understanding of the vocal mechanism, students can not effectively learn how to use them. I, therefore, will do a lot of vocal exercises with students before they actually sing songs, so they learn all the different colors of their voice.

I also like to put a lot of emphasis on performing, and not just singing! I help students really perform and feel the song, and not just sing the notes.

I am pretty laid back, but I expect students to practice at home! But, if students are having trouble learning, I am very patient!

Lessons in home studio and utilizes a piano to teach. Parking on driveway or on the street is fine.

I do have a keyboard that I can bring with me if the student does not have one in their home.

I teach the Estill method of voice pedagogy which focuses on the actual vocal mechanism (vocal chords, nasal passageways, etc) and uses terminology that describes the look of the vocal chords (thick folds, thin folds, etc) which create different kinds of vocal sounds. I use this method to teach classical voice and broadway voice.

About Me

I've always loved to sing from my earliest remembrance along with a love for the piano and a desire to play. I attended Academy of Our Lady - High School where I took four years of piano as well as vocal instruction. I performed with a group called The Madrigals as a 'high soprano' during those years. I further attended Wheaton College, attained a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in music. I was educated musically through Wheaton's Conservatory of Music. I studied piano, voice, theory, music history, music appreciation,and sight singing to name a few. I auditioned, performed, and traveled with the Women's Glee Club.
Since then, I served as the worship leader in church setting. I was responsible for music selection, accompaniment, and vocal coaching for our worship team. I've also worked as a facilitator in an after school program. There, I worked with students on an individual as well as group basis. I led a youth choir that traveled and performed for local nursing home residents. I also taught music appreciation and a fitness/movement class incorporating various genres of music.
Throughout the years I've had may opportunities to work with students one-on-one in piano and vocal instruction and performance. Overall, I am very passionate about music. Whether its listening, singing, playing or helping someone develop or grow in their talent, I simply love it!
Now, I'd be honored to work with you. I am comfortable working with beginners to intermediate in both piano and voice, ages 5 and up. As partners, this is a dual effort. I will do my best to find and utilize the most effective ways/methods to coach and assist you in reaching your piano or vocal goals. I will expect you to give your best effort consistently to get there one step at a time.

When it comes to lessons, I am a pleasant, approachable person. I enjoy laughter and believe it is a healthy response even when things are difficult.

In piano, I can help you learn the basics of playing such as note recognition, scales, chord formation, ear development and form a foundation that you can build upon progressively. In voice, I can help you develop good breathing, posture, tone, diction and expression. I am excited to work with whatever singing style that interests you most. Opera is my only exception at this point.
I offer training in classical music to use as a foundation for any other genre of music that interests you.

In general, I prefer to use well-balanced methods that incorporate theory along with the mechanics of learning. I believe in using tools, games,or aids that make learning fun, especially for the young beginner. The method used will depend upon the goals and needs of the student.

About Me

Music Director of the Chicago Philharmonia Orchestra since 1985, Farobag has also served as Managing Director of the University of Chicago Performing Artists Series from 1989 through 2002 and principal conductor of its resident professional ensembles. A skilled interpreter of Baroque literature as well, Farobag continues in his capacity as Artistic Advisor to the Baroque Masterplayers, a virtuoso ensemble that concatenates period performance techniques with modern instruments thus creating a unique voice within the realm of 17th and 18th- century repertoire.

A double graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, Farobag studied under Anastasia Jempelis, a pioneer of Suzuki violin pedagogy in the United States.

Befitting his penchant for encouraging artistic interest amongst younger members of his community, Farobag is also the principal conductor of the Zoroastrian Symphony Orchestra that offers a unique mixture of young and seasoned professionals sitting side-by-side in a strictly professional setting. Since the year 2000, the ZSO has staged highly successful performances at various venues in Houston, Chicago, and Toronto.

Having also taken graduate-level coursework in educational psychology, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Chicago, Farobag offers tutelage in various areas of elementary and secondary education as well as in SAT, ACT and GRE test preparation.

Additionally, as a certified Reiki Master, therapeutic and/or educational sessions are also extended to those who may be inclined to alternative healing techniques.

Sheer technique is necessary but insufficient to play an instrument well. Aural skills, that include the study of functional tonality and voice-leading are important factors that impart musicality. This is of great import if the prospective musician wants the audience to truly enjoy his or her performance !

Whether it be the 3 Rs or preparation in the performing arts, a remarkable instructor must go well beyond the subject matter at hand and help imbue the student with a spirit of wonder that, in due time, will foster enthusiasm necessary for excellence.

A child emulates and learns to communicate in his or her mother-tongue through a supporting and nurturing environment. Likewise, a student needs to be sufficiently motivated to embrace learning in a familiar supportive manner.

About Me

Mezzo-soprano Katherine C. is one of the most promising young talents on today’s opera scene. She created the role of the Young Nun in the world premiere of Stephen Hartke’s The Greater Good during Glimmerglass Opera’s 2006 Festival Season, which was later recorded on the Naxos label, and recently returned to the company as Aglaonice in the critically acclaimed production of Philip Glass’s Orhpée. She recently made role debuts with much acclaim as Hansel in Hansel and Gretel at the Syracuse Opera (where she will be awarded the comprimari “Artist of the Year” in 2009) and as Siebel in Faust with Princeton Music Festival.

Most recent noted engagements include a role debut as Sesto in Giulio Cesare and Un Musico in Manon Lescaut at the Florida Grand Opera, mezzo soloist in a recital of Rossini songs entitled Sins of My Old Age at Opera Omaha, Inez in a concert performance of Verdi’s Il Trovatore under the baton of Maestro Eduardo Müller with the Miami Concert Association, mezzo-soprano soloist in Vivaldi’s Gloriawith the Park Ridge Symphony, and Stephano in Roméo et Juliette at the Syracuse Opera. The Ithaca Journal said, “Katherine C., tall, appropriately youthful and brash, sang Stephano's taunting chanson spiritedly with a striking virtuosic final trill of the coda in two Fs.”

Katherine was formerly a member of Florida Grand Opera’s Young Artist Studio and the young artist programs of Lyric Opera of Chicago, Glimmerglass Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Aspen Music Festival and Brevard Music Festival. She was awarded third place in the 2009 Shreveport Opera Singer of the Year competition, as well as a grant from the Anna Sosenko Trust and a prize-winner in the Palm Beach Opera Competition and the Bel Canto Competition.

She holds a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Music degree from Bowling Green State University.

Katherine has taught at both the high school level (Loyola Academy, Regina Dominican and Elmwood Park) and the college level (Northwestern University as part of her graduate assistantship). Her students ranged from beginning classically trained students to musical theater students.

You will constantly be learning from me when you take lessons. I am an incredibly energetic, passionate and caring person which translates to a fun, open learning environment. Students will learn about proper singing technique with me including how to take prepare the body for singing, the proper breath and how to use the body to its utmost capabilities for the best produced sound.

Decorated with opera houses that we have performed in, surrounded by book cases with music scores and books and opera pictures, you will be inspired to learn while I sit behind our upright piano. I am a Columbia University Chicago graduate; I graduated with a degree in Music with a concentration in Classical Voice. I take music very seriously but at the same time I like my lessons to be fun and a joyous experience. I am very patient and helpful with any struggles that may seem too hard to the student. I will start my students off with the basic vocal warm ups and then move on to material that they would like to cover and if so the student doesn't have material to cover, I will present them with material. Being a singer is not easy at all, so I will challenge my students by giving exercises that challenge them to sing for proficient. I will also bring in material that is brand new and ask the students questions about the piece. The student is in the lesson to learn everything about music, so any type of material that I feel will benefit them and help them move closer to their goal, I will definitely present to them. After 3 to 6 months students will be able to sing in the 3 minor keys and the major key. The student will also have knowledge and know how to sing at least 3 different modes. The singer will know how to read basic sheet music and perform it with solfege. The singer will also have 4 songs of my choice or their choice mastered and ready to perform in front of an audience. Lastly, the singer will have knowledge of proper breath control while performing, usage of a microphone, and intonation.

Lessons are designed to better the performances and techniques of a singer, dancer, or actor.
Techniques such as breathing, diction, pitch, tone, posture, rhythm, smoothness, and stage presence will be practiced. I do my best to develop lessons that are tailored to each student based on their individual needs. Lessons start simply with gentle vocal exercises based on humming and open vowel sounds. Each student can expect to be challenged through exciting a stimulating exercises. I also teach techniques to improve posture, poise and vocal performance. I enjoy using simple scales to improve pitch and volume while also working on clarifying the students voice. A students performance, whether they aspire to be a performer, teacher, or just enjoy performing should have a positive self portrait of themselves. We will work on building confidence so we as performers can take pride in ourselves and what we represent. My students are expected to practice outside of the lesson. I also encourage them to keep a practice journal of when and how long they have practiced. It helps the students to trouble shoot areas of their performance and take the opportunity to ask questions during the next lesson.

I work from a loft apartment, consisting of an area next to computer with a home recording studio area for music and keyboard. There is also seating for parents if they desire to attend lessons.

I highly suggest the student have their own keyboard/piano. I do have a keyboard and music along with theory books and lesson plans, but would expect a quiet work environment for the student to pay attention.
