About Me

I love everything about teaching! I love music; it is my life. I sleep, breathe and dream music. I am a Columbia University Chicago graduate; I graduated with a degree in Music with a concentration in Classical Voice. I have performed in numerous operas and musicals, as well as, sung on Gospel Cruises all around the world. In my eyes, the student is the main focus so whatever issues, concerns or request the student may have I will treat them with priority. I am all about strengthening the natural born talent and making my students the best vocalist they can be. I'm here to serve the students and that is what I will do until they are confident in their gift...music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I take music very seriously but at the same time I like my lessons to be fun and a joyous experience. I am very patient and helpful with any struggles that may seem too hard to the student. I will start my students off with the basic vocal warm ups and then move on to material that they would like to cover and if so the student doesn't have material to cover, I will present them with material. Being a singer is not easy at all, so I will challenge my students by giving exercises that challenge them to sing for proficient. I will also bring in material that is brand new and ask the students questions about the piece. The student is in the lesson to learn everything about music, so any type of material that I feel will benefit them and help them move closer to their goal, I will definitely present to them. After 3 to 6 months students will be able to sing in the 3 minor keys and the major key. The student will also have knowledge and know how to sing at least 3 different modes. The singer will know how to read basic sheet music and perform it with solfege. The singer will also have 4 songs of my choice or their choice mastered and ready to perform in front of an audience. Lastly, the singer will have knowledge of proper breath control while performing, usage of a microphone, and intonation.

I have a very good balance in my lessons of nurturing the student, but also pushing the student to his or her highest potential. I always remain encouraging and supportive. I spend about a third of the lesson on technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well. You will get excellent vocal and piano technique from me, but you will also learn to have fun and appreciate the ease and relaxation of singing and playing piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are designed to better the performances and techniques of a singer, dancer, or actor.
Techniques such as breathing, diction, pitch, tone, posture, rhythm, smoothness, and stage presence will be practiced. I do my best to develop lessons that are tailored to each student based on their individual needs. Lessons start simply with gentle vocal exercises based on humming and open vowel sounds. Each student can expect to be challenged through exciting a stimulating exercises. I also teach techniques to improve posture, poise and vocal performance. I enjoy using simple scales to improve pitch and volume while also working on clarifying the students voice. A students performance, whether they aspire to be a performer, teacher, or just enjoy performing should have a positive self portrait of themselves. We will work on building confidence so we as performers can take pride in ourselves and what we represent. My students are expected to practice outside of the lesson. I also encourage them to keep a practice journal of when and how long they have practiced. It helps the students to trouble shoot areas of their performance and take the opportunity to ask questions during the next lesson.
My students and I will strive to
- To develop an understanding of basic music theory.
- To take responsibility for their musical and vocal growth.
- To reach for improvement and not perfection.
- To work on the memorization of a performance.
- To try their hardest with each lesson.
- To come to each lesson with an idea of what they would like to achieve.
- To constantly sing correct pitches and rhythms in all songs/performances.
- To practice correct posture and breathe support.
Most importantly,
- To enjoy their performance and learn to embrace the natural talents they are given.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I work from a loft apartment, consisting of an area next to computer with a home recording studio area for music and keyboard. There is also seating for parents if they desire to attend lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I highly suggest the student have their own keyboard/piano. I do have a keyboard and music along with theory books and lesson plans, but would expect a quiet work environment for the student to pay attention.

In vocal performance and technique: Opera, Musical theater, Lyric Soprano and Alto
Music: Classical, Contemporary, Rock, Pop, Christian, Country, R&B, Hip Hop

About Me

I am a professional singer and songwriter in Chicago performing and writing for Jenny Dragon and Jodi Jean Band. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Vocal Pedagogy at Northeastern Illinois University with expected graduation in the Spring of 2014. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre and worked as a professional actor for 5 years at theatres such as Chicago Shakespeare, American Players Theatre, Remy Bumppo, and Maine Shakespeare.

In teaching, I explore a text based approach to singing. My belief is that a profound understanding of lyrics can lead to deeper musicality. I work to guide my students to find inspiration from text and to foster a personal connection to the repertoire. This makes me an ideal teacher for singers looking to explore acting or musical theatre or actors wanting to learn how to sing. I promote good vocal technique, vocal health, and musicianship all the while nurturing the artists’ individuality and creativity.

About Me

Greetings and welcome to my Studio Profile,

As a professional singer and teacher, I strive for artistic excellence and customer satisfaction. I want you to be excited about your voice and the progress you are making and will do everything I can to support your growth and progress. I have 10 years of experience in private teaching and would be delighted to apply this knowledge to help you reach your musical goals, whether auditioning for your school musical, preparing for college auditions, joining a church choir, or auditioning for an opera company.

I teach a variety of musical styles and skill sets including classical, musical theater, jazz, and some pop based on the principles of voice pedagogy and science. Lessons are tailored to fit your individual needs and abilities, and I use exercises and repertoire to increase your ease and vocal stamina, increase range and flexibility, and ultimately help free up your voice for maximum beauty and expression.

I graduated with highest honors with a Bachelor's degree in Voice Performance from University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and recently completed my Master's degree in Voice Pedagogy and Performance from Westminster Choir College, graduating with distinction. My studies have taken me abroad to performing programs in Austria, Italy, Serbia, and Canada. I am an active performer and am experienced singing opera, classical music, jazz, musical theater, choral music, a Capella and Baroque chamber music. I am currently singing with the Chicago Master Singers and look forward to a European tour with this group next summer.

In addition to private voice lessons, I am trained to tutor in music theory, music history, sight reading, beginning cello, and Singing diction for Latin, Italian, French, and German.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your musical goals in person!

Please feel free to contact TakeLessons with any questions.

Warmly,
Sara L.

About Me

"Let's discover what the voice is like, let's learn how to use it easily and effectively, and let's have fun in the process."

‹I discovered music at an early age, classical music and ABBA were what played nonstop growing up. That is until I discovered this little musical called Annie. *Insert a little montage of 5 year old Melissa singing all of the songs at the top of her lungs* Broadway became a huge passion and I have crafted my life around all aspects of the theatrical craft, from performing in professional productions around the world and Chicago-land area to working every aspect backstage from costumes to sets to choreography.

‹My love of theatre was cultivated at a young age by being a participant in Spotlight Youth Theatre (formerly Christian Youth Theatre) performing in over 20 musical productions produced by them. This sparked the desire to make theatre my life, leading to two degrees from International university's: Music Theatre Performance & Applied Theatre. Since returning to Chicago and creating a vibrant theatrical career, I have returned to my Spotlight roots by taking on the role of Director for their main stage productions. I have created theatrical productions that have been heralded by students, parents and peers as triumphs not only in children's theatre but also on the Chicago theatre scope. These productions instilled within me a heart for the young performer and a love of sharing music with them.

‹Introducing a child to the world of music is like opening a door to a magical place full of wonder, excitement and discovery. Nothing inspires me more then watching a student grow in confidence and knowledge about this magical world. I'm a firm believer that children of all ages can take and learn from voice lessons and that it's never too early to build a musical foundation. Learning to match pitch, understand rhythm and telling a story through song are all invaluable tools that can be learned at any age. With the youngest we begin to learn through games and stories, progressing all the way up to the college prep for a performing arts school where we delve deeply into character to bring the music alive. As a professional director I have the unique advantage of prepping my students for the theatrical world and helping to guide them on the path that is right for them. Music is the the language of the world, so let's explore the world together!
