Derrick M. Naperville, IL

"As a drummer I am more aware of the actual tracking part of the recording process (actually playing the drums), and what it takes to get a good track. Things like getting a good drum sound, and playing an appropriate part are only half the battle, and the easy half at that. Playing along to a click track (metronome), and the concept of playing ahead of the beat for more energetic feel, or behind the beat for a relaxed bluesy feel are strange at first, but once mastered make all the difference in the world. After approximately 100 recording sessions, I've also developed a feel for the software and mixing techniques most studio engineers employ now and days."

-Derrick M.

About Derrick

Derrick began playing the drums at the age of 8 in the elementary school concert band. He started out on just a snare drum but when he was 12, he got his first real drum set, and started a life of music. Fast forward a few years and Derrick had experience playing in jazz bands, marching bands, concert bands, steel pan calypso band, along with his local garage band. After high school, Derrick moved to California to attend the Musicians Institutes in Hollywood California. There he studied under some of the greatest professionals in the business, and was exposed to a wide variety of music styles ranging from, Latin, R&B, Jazz, Funk, Rock, etc. After graduating from school, Derrick moved back to Chicago where he has been playing weekly gigs, and touring around the country with his ...

Great Drum Teacher

My daughter had been taking private drum lesson for years before she started with Derrick. At the first lesson, Derrick told her how important it was to feel the music, other than just working on technique. That was exactly what she needed to work on. Derrick has a broad experience with playing different type of music. He likes to show her how to play, which helps her understand right away. He is very nice and patient. He is flexible and reliable in terms of lesson schedules. He uses lots of references, songs and exercises in his teaching. Now, my daughter enjoys her lessons and practices a lot more.

Derrick is everything a Teacher should be.

I have known Derrick for several years and can attest to his playing and teaching prowess. He is a well schooled percussionist, drum set player and teacher. Even though I have played professionally for over 40 years, I still come to Derrick to get a different perspective and guidance in my playing. Derrick is the perfect blend of technician and musician all rolled into one! While he can improve a beginning to advanced player's technique, he also stresses the need to play musically. This is an important aspect to anyone wanting to 'up their game'. The fact that he is a truly nice person only adds to his other attributes. You can't find a better teacher in the Chicagoland area. Period!

Recording lessons focus on work in ProTools, Reason, and supporting music production software. The process of setting up equipment and running the audio for shows is taught and reviewed. In addition, listening and audio analysis are a main focus as well as the technology involved in the recording industry.

About Loretta

I have always been fascinated with how music is created and who works behind the scenes of performances and recordings. I started playing the flute in elementary school, piano in junior high school, and singing in high school. Once I got to UMASS, Dartmouth I chose the Music option for my major. I then moved on to NYU. I have been teaching for over ten years now. Working with students both in person and online has been amazing. With online lessons I am able to work with students who love the convenience of being at home and in person I can show students what it is like to really grow! I love my students of all ages, and can only hope to show others how amazing music can be. I have worked with a handful of students with special needs and am comfortable teaching in a non-traditional style.

My 11-year-old absolutely loves Miss Loretta. She's enthusiastic, patient, encouraging and makes learning music fun. My daughter looks forward to her weekly lesson and learning something new. If my daughter brings a piece she wants to learn, Loretta finds a way to fit it in. It's clear that Loretta loves teaching and is a natural at it. We feel lucky to have found her.

In my last lesson, Loretta helped me work through a major misconception about myself. I did not believe that my voice sounded good in falsetto - so I didn't practice it, lowered my expectations, and generally created a self-defeating barrier..

The transformation in learning to love what's coming out of my pipes is more than just voice-deep. Now I believe there are new lands I can conquer! Thank you for helping me to love my upper register Loretta!

About Kyle

Re-imagine. Re-define. Re-authenticate. This is the motto followed by Minnesota born Kyle Wesley; combining classic methods with modern soundscapes in order to stretch genres. Whether through production skills, engineering, or instrumental performances, the goal is always innovation. Studying under multiple teachers and disciplines, Kyle Wesley's sound has been shaped by his education, stemming from Jonny Lang's teacher Teddy Larsen, to jazz visionaries Nick Fryer and Alan Carter (MSUM), to professional Nashville session guitarist Mike Ihde (Berklee College of Music). Thanks to proper education and inspiration, Kyle Wesley has performed at many venues of multiple sizes. As small as local jazz clubs, such as Studio 222, unique as the ...

There are so many good things to say about Kyle that I have no idea where to start!
Kyle is a skilled musician with great patience, knowledge and communication skills He cared about my goals and progress. His relaxed teaching style helped me feel comfortable with the guitar and now I understand music theory and know how to use it. Kyle is overall a great instructor and such a nice guy with the ability to explain even complex correlations in simple words.

Kyle is amazing! There is just no if, ands, or buts, about it. He has taught me so much about music, and has helped me discovered talents that have been dormant for as long as I could remember. I HIGHLY recommend him as your guitar teacher, and especially for people who live close to West End. Very close to Vanderbilt, TSU(both main and downtown campuses), and Fisk University. Kyle you are amazing, and it was an honor to be your student.

Let me begin by saying I have never EVER written a review for someone, nevertheless, had singing lessons. If you're looking for someone to expand your range, hit those high or low notes, make you laugh while subconsciously learning the material, make you comfortable while helping you reach you singing goal, and teach you strategies in singing-- Margo is definitely the person to do so. I am pleasantly impressed by her knowledge, singing, and teaching abilities. Definitely deserves more than five stars.

I enjoy working with Margo. She pulls me out of my comfort zone with ease. Margo's style of teaching makes it fun and interesting, yet I still feel that I am learning. I have only taken three lessons so far, and personally I hear and feel the improvement in my overall performance. She is great, and I look forward to continuing my lessons with her.

Voytek is unbelievably positive and flexible. I've been working with him for about 6 months, and he started me off with a great set of lessons and materials that was right for me. He always focuses on what I do well, so I want keep playing, even when things get hard. When he points out something to work on, he somehow comes across positive - more like a helpful suggestion than a critique. Voytek has been knowledgable and flexible when I want to focus on music theory or just play songs that I like. I continue to work with him and would hire him for other types of lessons.
