Pamela K. West Haven, CT

Subjects Taught

Music Performance, Music Theory, Piano

About Me

PAMELA has been teaching piano since the age of 15, and then after her graduation with honors in piano performance from the State University College at Fredonia, NY, where she studied with Distinguished Artist-in-Residence, acclaimed author, concert pianist and recording artist, the late Claudette Sorel. Pamela's many successful students have studied with her privately and also at Manhattan's St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's Independent School near Columbia University, Upper East Side's Trevor Day Independent School, and the Lyceum Kennedy French School. Her solo repertoire is large and varied, and she encourages her students to explore new music as well as the standard literature. Pamela balances her instinct for evoking the the student's trust and desire to learn with the requisite task of cultivating disciplined practice habits. Her more advanced protégés' consistent growth in technical skill, interpretation, and musicianship emanate naturally from her guidance, inspiration and tutelage. Pamela brings her extensive professional music background to bear as a piano instructor whose special gift for working with children and young adults is impressive and unique. She is a dedicated mentor, displaying care and patience with the young beginner, as well as a passion for imbuing her students with the love of music and the joy of learning to play the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
My students' time with me is quite structured so as to make the most of our time together. We begin with assigned technical work, scales or arpeggi and other various technical exercises (I rely on the Dozen-a-Day series and even my adults use these as well as the children!) Then we begin to work together on the assigned repertoire, which is geared to the level of advancement and a balanced menu is vital (classics, modern, contemporary, early jazz and rock for fun). We sometimes end up by looking thru music for the near future and I will often sit down and play things I think will "light up" their young faces and give them pieces to look forward to playing themselves!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons are given on a high-gloss black 5'9" Kohler & Campbell grand piano.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained and therefore I am best suited to teach piano from a classical vantage point. I believe in a balanced repertoire. As soon as a child/adult can play the easier compositions of the baroque and classical composers, we then begin to add composers such as Tansman and Kabalevsky, modern composers who wrote for children, as well as the easier romantic compositions. I use the d'Auberge and Thompson method books as well as the Burnam "Dozen-a-Day" technical exercise books for the young students. We learn music theory, study the lives of the great composers, learn to use the metronome as well as perform compositions from memory at twice yearly recitals.

Roland R. Astoria, NY

Subjects Taught

Acting, Drum, Music Performance, Music Theory, Percussion

About Me

Roland R was born and raised in New York City. He started playing drums at the ripe age of 12. Throughout his schooling, Roland was a member of Concert Bands, Jazz Bands, and Drum Corps. He eventually started to explore playing music outside of school with friends and independent musicians around New York City. Roland's teaching "career" started about 7 years ago, when his baby cousins took an interest in banging on pots and pans with wooden spoons. His interest in helping others develop their ability to express themselves eventually evolved into in-studio lessons with children and adults of all skill levels. Roland has volunteered for non-profit organizations and college now programs in the past. Through his experiences, he's grown accustomed to speaking in front of large groups of students. Whether or not it's a large group or just a 1 on 1 session, patience and tolerance is the key when working with a student. He fully understands the difficulty of training one's mind to do things that seem unnatural. Like playing drum set for instance.

Nevertheless, Roland is adamant about the idea that one's progress is dependent on how much work you put into it. Practice makes perfect! So, Roland cherishes the feeling when he sees that a student(s) is genuinely putting in the effort to practice and/or hone his creative interests.

*** Lesson Details ***
One of my core philosophies in life is to "keep it real." I have a very balanced demeanor toward teaching. I can be pretty laid-back when the moment is right. When it's time to turn on serious mode, I can be a very focused and dedicated person. My approach will depend on the student. Usually I'll start by asking you some questions about your musical taste, goals, passions... Mainly to understand where you're coming from so that I can customize the lessons around your interests.

For beginners, I'll try to emphasize laying the foundation for developing rhythm. With more experience, I can start to delve into more abstract, technical concepts. This is all based on a sliding scale of skill. So, it's subject to change.

If you decide to study music with me, I can guarantee that you'll develop a greater appreciation for drums/percussion. I will introduce you to rhythms from all around the world, as well as the schools of thought that help to create a holistic interpretation of music. Some students may learn technique more thoroughly if that's the focus they wish to take. Others may just want to learn basic patterns on a drum kit. The sky's the limit.
