This was my first instrument and will always have a special place in my studio. I studied the Suzuki method but also fiddled around — to the delight of my grandfather, a lover of folk and fiddle music, who constantly requested that I play him the "Orange Blossom Special". (I believe a loving, listening ear can be important for any musician. As a performer, I still take requests.)

As a teacher, my appreciation of technique and some of my most powerful pedagogy methods came from my fabulous violin teacher Ruth Ann Bell.

Artists such as Tracy Knoop, Jay Thomas, Don Lanphere, Bill Ramsay, Hadley Caliman, Julian Priester and many others had a large impact on Kareem early in his musical education. I am an actor/singer/dancer who has worked professionally in NYC, Chicago, MN and Seattle over the past 17 years. I have a BFA in Musical Theatre from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University and completed Advanced Training at the American Musical & Dramatic Academy in NYC. Some of my favorite roles include performing in 'A Narrow Bed' (Wings Theatre, NYC), dancing alongside Smashmouth (Radio City Music Hall, NYC) and playing “Benten” in the World Premiere of 'The Kyogen Rope' (O’Malley Theatre, Chicago). I'm a professional composer, teacher, and pianist - and I like to keep active doing all three throughout my community. My piano and composition lessons are very in-depth, but also very flexible. Because of my thorough knowledge and experience with music, I can teach all ages, skill levels, and an array of important subjects - including piano, ear-training, music theory, improvisation, composition, creativity, music history, ethnomusicology, and percussion. Pianist, Rian D., holds a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Washington State University where he graduated at the top of his class. During his time at WSU he was a recipient of the prestigious Presser Scholarship, which is awarded to college students based on academic merit and performance experience. He also placed in numerous local and regional piano and chamber music competitions, including finishing as a finalist in the Washington-Idaho Symphony Young Artist Competition and performing as a soloist with the orchestra.

During my time at Berklee I received two scholarships, The Korg Endowed for Early Childhood Education and the Scott Benson Scholarship, the highest award given for Songwriting. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Contemporary Vocal Performance at the University of Colorado Denver in 2009. I graduated summa cum laude (with highest honors) and won the Outstanding Graduate award from the College of Arts & Media. I even sang the National Anthem at my own graduation, in front of thousands of other graduates and their families, an honor usually reserved for faculty.

While earning my degree, I specialized in singing, songwriting and the recording arts. I also professionally competed in an honors a cappella group.
