About Me

Music is my life and air. I started playing the drums when I was 12 years old. I played in every band and music ensemble I could throughout junior high, high school, and college. I have played in bands outside of school with music styles ranging from Rock, Punk, Hardcore, Metal, and Hip Hop. Since 2008, I have been teaching private drum set lessons and marching percussion to students of all ages and backgrounds.

Recently, I attended the University of Texas at Arlington where I furthered my education in music teaching, music theory, performance, and percussion. I am also an experienced Djembe and Didgeridoo performer. Teaching and encouraging others in music comes naturally to me, and my degree in Music Business supports knowing how to prepare lessons and curriculum so students succeed.

About Me

Hi, my name is Lucas and I am a private lesson teacher in the DFW area. I have been teaching private lessons for the past 6 years. Prior to to that I attended the University of North Texas and received a BM in Music Performance. I teach drums, percussion, piano and music theory. I also am a professional gigging drummer in DFW. I have taught students of all ages and levels starting from 4 years old to adults. If you are looking to start out on an instrument for the first time, I am the teacher you want since I specialize in training beginners with no musical training whatsoever. My lessons are fun and stress free yet challenging enough to notice progress, and I tailor my lessons to the individual focusing on specific learning styles.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have a laid back and fun approach to teaching that has proven to be successful over the years. My drum students start out with basic exercises and patterns that they can do on a practice pad or even on the carpet floor. I then teach them how to read rhythms. If they have a drumset, I would then start them out with some simple rock beats utilizing the rhythms they just learned and emphasizing counting. As the student progresses and is able to play multiple beats and patterns, I then start teaching them how to play along to some simple songs. Playing along to music is the most fun part of the lessons and the most applicable to real life situations. I'm always keeping up with the current pop hits on the radio and like to have the students play along to songs that they know and like. This is a great, fun way to learn and is also challenging as far as keeping the tempo and lining up with the music. I have used this method for years on myself and students and it is a proven method. The book that I like to start out with is The Drumset Musician by Rod Morgenstein. If they are able to master this book, I then move on to more advanced independence books like Future Sounds by David Garibaldi and The New Breed by Gary Chester.

With my piano students I start them out with Piano Adventures Primer Level for children or Piano Adventures for the Adult Beginner if they are an adult. I go through page by page in the book teaching them fundamentals starting with finger coordination then going on to reading music on the staff. This is a good series of books that has multiple levels and is helpful for tracking the progress of the student. My goal in the piano lessons is teaching students how to read music which can be very challenging. I test the students musical memory week by week making sure they know which notes they are playing as well as playing the correct rhythms. I also have them sing the note that they are playing as this is proven to help learn the notes more efficiently.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The student is expected to provide a piano or keyboard for piano lessons or practice pad and/or drum kit. I expect my student to have sticks.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in rock, country and pop.
