I've been cooking and baking for fun ever since I was 3 years old, and in high school and college, I cooked dinner with friends and classmates, teaching them prep skills, healthy meal planning, how to follow a recipe, and how to improvise. I also spent 6 months interning at Serious Eats and Food52, two food websites, where I wrote instructional articles on cooking and baking.
I was born and raised in New Orleans, graduated from Brown University in 2013, and am currently based in Brooklyn. As a writer, I love language -- I've taught and tutored everything from SAT/ACT verbal sections to essay writing, and in my own time I'm a food and cookbook writer (which means I can also whip up very good study snacks!). I freelance, so my schedule is very flexible, and I'm more than happy to tutor anywhere in the city. To me, teaching is such a joy, so it's important to me that all of my students are comfortable and have fun, too.
Chelsea has been an avid baker for years. She teaches students 5-20 the basics of baking for home use. Group lessons are available as well and are a fun way to kick off a party. During lessons, students can choose from a variety of options such as cake, cookies, macaroons, bread, ice cream, and soufflés. All ingredients must be bought ahead of time by the student and baking selection must be made 2 days before class.

We're going to learn to make bread! Yeast breads, quickbreads, and sourdough from your own starter. You won't believe how easy it is to make crackling sourdough for -- get this -- 12 cents a loaf! Once you pull a loaf of molasses walnut bread out of the oven, you will never go back to store-bought. There's a myth going around that bread baking is difficult and complicated and fraught with failure...NOT true! It's easier than you think! We will also make any other baked goods you would like to try: pies, cookies, whatever you like. I've been baking for 40 years.
I have a no-pressure, comfortable approach to all learning. Being a beginner is a great time, full of experimentation & curiosity. I teach by finding out where you need to start in this learning process, then explaining & showing, then watching you do the skill. We'll stay at any level you're having trouble with until you feel totally comfortable, then proceed to the next step. Works every time!
