About Me

I have been a professional performing musician and teacher for going on a decade. I've studied jazz guitar and film scoring at Berklee as well as bass and composition at Lewis and Clark. I've toured across the country several times over, playing everything from jazz to funk, metal to pop. More importantly, I've been teaching privately since high school when I'd bike to students houses around my neighborhood. Since then I've taught at the local branches of School of Rock in Portland, OR, Boston, and New York, teaching privately, coaching ensembles, directing student concerts, and teaching theory workshops. I also have been working to integrate cutting edge digital technology into my teaching practices should students wish to explore contemporary processes. Music has long been my life's love, and my highest hopes lie in in sharing its rewards.

I also have spent terms on and off teaching middle and high school English, History, and Spanish and have moonlighted in kitchens and bars. I freelance as a writer of both fiction and journalism.

No matter what you are interested in, my lessons are wholly student driven. I work with you to determine your goals and how to best achieve them through fun and accessible exercises.

*** Lesson Details ***
My primary interest with any student regardless of age or instrument is to cultivate a higher appreciation and understanding of music, both as a listener and a participant. As the hopes of any student is the mastery of songs, my teaching style is largely founded in learning songs, no matter the difficulty level. While I have a myriad of exercises and drills to build technical prowess, I work with each student to build a curriculum as unique as they are, they're own musical tastes the seeds from which we will grow our goals. Not too far removed in years from my own beginning days, I know it's no fun to try and play what you wouldn't listen to in the first place. As basic technique is developed I introduce students to a wider range of influences that best suits their interests and aims. All I ask from my students is that they enjoy their practice, however strenuous or laid back it may be.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home Studio Desk with amplifiers (no drum kit)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have my own instruments and amplification. I can loan students both for a lesson, but not for take-home practice.

*** Specialties ***
Funk, Jazz, Metal, Blues, Rock

Philosophy

I encourage students to pursue their musical interests as much as possible. I find that students progress much faster when they follow their heart and play the music that they like. I love teaching different kinds of music such as Pop and Rock, Blues, Jazz, Latin, Classical, Flamenco.

Methodology

I envision for my students to gain a well rounded musical knowledge so that they have the tools to pursue any style of music either professionally or for their own enjoyment. This is why I teach music focusing on four aspects: technique, music reading, harmony and improvisation. I try to tailor this four aspects to people's abilities and interests.

Teaching Experience

I have taught privately for 8 years to students of different levels of skill, ages, and backgrounds. Furthermore I have experience teaching a Jazz workshop at Odyssey Middle School, conducting Jam Sessions at Heriz Music in Burlingame, developing and teaching the musical program for a non-profit organization for individuals with developmental disabilities in San Rafael.

Yonatan T. Berkeley, CA

Subjects Taught

Accordion, Banjo, Classical Guitar, Guitar, Mandolin, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Percussion, Singing, Songwriting, Ukulele

About Me

Yonatan recently graduated from UC Santa Cruz, with a B.A. in classical guitar and electronic music. Since then, he has been teaching music full-time both in large classes and to individuals. When he is not teaching, he is performing with one of his folk, blues, or rock bands. Yonatan has enjoyed teaching music for over 3 years. He teaches Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Accordion, Theory, Ukulele, and songwriting.

Throughout his childhood his musical education was non-traditional, as he learned to play by listening to the musicians that inspired him, and aimed to replicate their playing while defining his own style. Later in his life, he understood the benefit of formal training, which led him to receive a B.A. in music.

For this reason, Yonatan's lessons incorporate both ways he learned music, which include identifying your interests and inspirations, while also giving you the exercises and techniques needed to improve your skills.

Yonatan is an award-winning songwriter, performer, and teacher with an amazing ability to inspire his students.

Adam L. Berkeley, CA

Subjects Taught

Arrangement and Composition, Banjo, Classical Piano, Composition, Ear Training, Music Performance, Music Theory, Piano

About Me

Hi,

My name is Adam and I am a passionate musician who teaches students of all ages and skill levels. I teach Piano and Keyboards. My expertise is in the areas of jazz and improvisation. However, I am classically trained and I am able to teach theory, sight-reading and technique with equal ability.

We will be able to cover a wide range of styles including classical repertoire, jazz, blues, R&B, gospel, ragtime/stride, country, and pop. I build each lesson off of my student's individual strengths, weaknesses, and learning goals. I do not work from a cookie cutter lesson plan and I foster creativity, confidence, and fun during our time together. We work on anything from reading music to developing an original voice on the instrument. I am able to come to you, and you are welcome at my home studio in Berkeley.

Thanks for reading, and feel free to email me with any questions.
