About Me

I understand that there are many desires a pupil can have about learning music, especially towards the practicality of the modern world and I hope to gear the student towards that. I have worked with children for almost a decade so I am comfortable with youth education. My experience with working with children is mostly with the Boy Scouts of America since I was 14. From teaching scouts about nature, to directing shooting ranges as an NRA Rifle Safety Officer, to eventually managing a camp. As a young adult who has just finished their music degree from collage and working to further my education, I can understand the process of learning a musical instrument and guide the student on a smoother path to their goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
When taking lessons with me, you can expect for a teacher who listens to the desires of his or her student. I believe music theory and technique is essential to learning an instrument, but it can be rough and boring so I spend a good portion of the lesson working with the student towards their goals. This curriculum brings the most important motivation in learning an instrument, which is achieving improvement while having fun. After 3 months, an adult student should have the ability to read music and play chords so they may learn the songs they love and I can help them along. With a child my expectations are different because in my experience most youth under the age of 9 have not established a recognition for the music around them. To compensate for a child I spend a portion of the lesson introducing different styles of music such as classical, jazz, rock, and world. I hope not only to increase the pupil's interest towards their instrument but into music and art in general. My overall goal with a long term student is to understand the basics of technique, reading music, and understanding theory. Once past there I make a point to make the intermediate student want to practice by applying basic skills learned at the beginner level and bring them into songwriting, improvisation, and learning a their favorite radio songs or show tunes.

Weighted and unweighted electric pianos, harmonicas, marimba, kazoos, guitars, amplifiers, ukulele, drums, other string instruments, my library of music and method books, and just a great room of musical fun. There is a cat in this home if you have allergies.

For Piano I stick to Faber's teaching for youth beginner and than I use Ferdinand Breyer's method for intermediate. My main style of playing that i received in education is mostly in jazz and improvisation. I like to focus of my teaching of music in the genres of jazz, classical, pop, rock, and blues.

About Me

Adrienne is a native of Detroit, who recently graduated with a Master's Degree in Opera from the University of Maryland Opera Studio. Before pursuing that degree, she graduated with honors from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance and a Teaching Certificate in K-12 Vocal Music. She has been full time music teacher in a Montessori Academy, an Associate Instructor of Voice at the International School of Music in Bethesda, MD, and has over 10 years of professional experience working with students all ages. Most recently, she had the distinct honor of creating the role of Marva Trotter in the World Premiere of "Shadowboxer," based on the life of legendary boxer, Joe Louis. Other recent performances include the role of Ramiro in Mozart’s "La finta giardiniera" with the Maryland Opera Studio; the title role in Bizet's "Carmen," and winning First Place in the Adrian Boyer Aria Competition at the Bay View Music Festival. She placed first in both the Local and District levels of the 2006 NANBWPC Voice Competition (formerly the “Leontyne Price Competition”) and went on to compete at the National Level. Since the summer of 2007, Adrienne has performed extensively on some of the most infamous European stages as the Strawberry Woman in Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" under the auspices of New York Harlem Productions. She is currently performing with the Washington National Opera, and recently made her solo role debut in Puccini's "Manon Lescaut." Though her training and professional singing career focus is opera, she prides herself on her versatility as a performer who can effortlessly navigate between the demands gospel, musical theatre and pop genres. She also enjoys sharing the secrets to great singing and holds thee ability to teach all styles of singing.

My philosophy behind teaching has a lot to do with being physically involved in music making. I believe one needs to use one's whole body to support good singing. I'm very much into using movements to help students learn to move their breath through to create sound. I teach classical vocal technique as the basis for all styles. I teach proper breath support in order to build a strong, healthy vocal sound. After months of working with me, students will have a very strong grasp of proper breathing for singing and how to support their sound with their whole body.

About Me

My name is Jennifer. I got my degree in vocal performance and minored in Jazz. I began voice lessons myself when I was eight. I am a mezzo soprano, and can teach both female and male voices. I have performed in several opera productions including but not limited to The Marriage of Figaro, Dido and Aeneus, Tenderland, and Hand of Bridge. I have worked and performed in masterworks by Brahms, Chopin, Mozart to name a few. I studied in French, English, Spanish, Italian, and German. I studied diction, ear training, piano, music history, pedagogy, and music theory. I have also performed with artists such as New York Voices, Bobby Mcferrin and Kurt Elling. I was blessed with many learning opportunites to grow in my passion and I would love to pass that knowledge and passion to anyone who wants to learn.

Lessons are designed around the needs of each student. The first lessons is always spent testing range, knowledge and abilities already known by the student. Then the student weighs in on what kind of music they would like to learn and what they hope to gain from the lessons. Theory and ear training are incorporated into the lessons. We work on breathing, technique and style. Generally we start with English or Italian. We work on vocal performance from a classical standpoint but Jazz and Broadway can also be taught if desired by the student. Scales and exercises are given each week to be worked on until the next lesson. A recording device is encouraged if the student cannot play the piano. Also, a voice note book to take notes during the lesson to be used during practice during the week.

About Me

I have always loved music. For me, the process of making music gives me the opportunity to lose myself in the moment. It does not matter what type of music I am listening to, I will find a connection to the music.

I exhibited an interest in music at an early age. On many Saturday afternoons my mom would find me planted in front of the television set watching opera. So, it came as no surprise to family members that mom enrolled me in music lessons, singing lessons to follow.

Throughout my teens I found myself involved in anything related to music. I sang in the school choir, as well as background choral work in musicals and even played the piano occasionally. I also had the opportunity to sing with a group called "Up with People," and performed some of their repertoire around the state.

I would love to share my passion and joy of music with anyone who wants to discover their own journey into the musical world.

After high school I continued my lifelong study of music. I graduated from George Mason University with a degree in Liberal Arts Studies, majoring in piano. I was able to work with Jacequeline-Cursagi Schmitt, who helped me refine my piano technique. I also continued taking voice lessons during college and am currently studying with a local Takelessons teacher.

After college I started teaching piano. I have worked with student's from the age of five through adulthood. I love working with any age group. As a teacher, I am always looking for new and interesting approaches to educating myself and to engage my students in the process of learning music.

I teach to the student's "learning style." I use whatever resources are available to reinforce musical concepts. I am patient, and laid back. I want my students to feel comfortable, and know that they can be themselves when they are working with me. Most of all what a student can expect is a teacher who is interested in them, their progress, and making the our time together as enjoyable as possible. I believe that I help students see the joy music brings to their lives.

I have always felt that one of my greatest strengthens is my ability to interact with children and adults, and I hope that I can continue to share my love of music in the coming years.

My philosophy of teaching is a mixture of expectation that a student will put forth an honest effort to learn what I have asked. However, I maintain a balance between what I expect and what the student needs. I would hope that a student could come to me, if they are unable to complete an assignment, and together we will fix the problem. I believe in giving a student the space to learn. I do not consider myself a strict teacher. However, I do expect the student to respect my authority and that the time we spend together is productive, yet enjoyable. I am supportive, yet will correct when I believe it is necessary.

Within three to six months I would hope that the student would feel more comfortable at the piano. I would expect him to learn posture at the piano, including hand position. I would expect that his knowledge of the right and left hand notes would become more proficient, and that he would understand what the staff is. I would expect that he understands keyboard geography, distance between notes, the concept of high/low, dynamics, and patterns (both directional and melodic). I would add two-handed playing, at a very basic level. This, of course, would depend on the progress and age of the student, and what the level of hand-eye coordination is.

I use Alfred, however I am eclectic, in that I make use of different books, depending on the need of the student. I believe in setting goals, however I am flexible in that I want to be certain that the student has the time to build a solid foundation.

I also use the computer for music theory, note reading, chord and key signature recognition and for ear training. I have a computer program that allows a student to be creative and develop his skills at composing. In the past year or two, I have begun using the iPad and it's numerous apps that relate to music.

As a vocalist, I also believe in developing the students ear through pitch recognition and thereby start the process of playing by ear on the piano.
I encourage singing, if the student is comfortable, and while I do not teach singing, I have a solid background in voice and I understand the breath support that is needed to sing or play an instrument.

In conclusion, I try make the learning experience as well rounded as possible, preparing him for future study, or simply to enjoy the art of piano playing.

Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. She loves the area, and she and her husband are thrilled to be putting down roots in the community. As a performer, Jessica has traveled around the world, but throughout her career teaching has been one of her most important focuses. "As a relative newcomer to the DC area, growing my private studio has been a great way to get involved in the community. My teaching style is individualized, but I always try to include two important things: building a strong basic skill set, and developing creativity."

In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.

Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!
