Singing is singing, regardless of genre - it is the different application of the same technique that results in a different sound. Singing is universal. What an opera singer vs. a music theater singer work on will be very similar over the course of study. We learn much from the study of repertoire we are not as familiar with. All students will benefit from a variety of classical and popular pieces.
How do we achieve this? Together we will aim for an evenness of vowel production, striving for consistency from one note to the next. Within the context of repertoire, we are encouraged to use the text and meaning of the words to our advantage, and we aim to bring out our inner expressiveness through self discovery.
We use a variety of methods to achieve this, including:
- relevant vocalises and excercises
- picking repertoire that realizes both artistic and technical goals
- encouraging active listening to a variety of styles
