Jennifer Y. Cincinnati, OH

Subjects Taught

Fiddle, Music Performance, Music Theory, Violin

About Me

I am very passionate about teaching and hope to inspire a love for music in all my students! I believe that with hard work and a supportive teacher, a person can achieve anything. I impart to my students the knowledge I received from one of the nation's most prestigious music conservatories, and I offer training from methods in which I am certified to teach, all in a nurturing and friendly environment.

I am certified in the Sassmannshaus Method (Early Start on the Violin) and was trained in the Suzuki Method. I have also studied pedagogy under Professor Kurt Sassmannshaus at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. I previously taught private lessons, chamber music, and masterclasses at the Virginia Beach School of the Arts, the Hampton Roads Performing Arts Academy (VA), and the Seven Hills School in Cincinnati.

Aside from teaching, I am a professional violinist. Currently, I am the acting Assistant Concertmaster with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra and am also a member of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra. Prior to moving to Washington State, I previously performed with the Fayetteville Symphony, Tar River Philharmonic, Knoxville Symphony, Richmond (IN) Symphony, Symphony of the Mountains (TN), and the Oak Ridge Symphony. I have also attended many of the nation's premier music festivals, including the Castleton Festival, Texas Music Festival, Round Top Festival Institute, and the Brevard Music Center.

I earned BM and MM degrees in violin performance from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), where I graduated Summa Cum Laude. My primary teachers were Dr. Piotr Milewski and Gabriel Pegis.

Albert Einsten said, "I know that the most joy in my life has come to me from my violin." My joy comes from enabling students to experience this. Please join me for lessons!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very upbeat and motivational in lessons. I care about helping my students succeed and achieve their goals. I'm honest but never harsh, and I challenge my students in order to help them flourish as talented musicians.

I use a combination of the Sassmannshaus Method and the Suzuki Method. Both will teach the student the fundamentals of violin playing, how to read music, and famous pieces from the violin repertoire. Students who use this combination have gone on to become very advanced players, and someday, this could be you! Let me help you reach your highest potential!

*** Studio Equipment ***
In home: private, designated studio with music stand, metronome, and additional accessories, music, and equipment for student; seating for parents.
I require that students rent or purchase their own instrument and necessary accessories (shoulder rest, rosin, strings, etc.)

*** Specialties ***
I was trained for 11 years in the Suzuki method, and I am a certified teacher of the Sassmannshaus Tradition violin method (Early Start on the Violin). I am classically trained and am most experienced teaching in that style, but I also enjoy fiddle and folk music and could teach in those styles as well.

Subjects Taught

Bass Guitar, Classical Guitar, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Theory, Songwriting

About Me

I have been playing guitar since the age of 9. I have studied Classical, and Jazz at CCM's Prep Dept. in middle school and throughout high school as well as rock, folk, country etc. with other local teachers. I started teaching lessons at the age of 18 in local music stores and have never stopped. While doing this I attended The College of Mount St. Joseph where I studied Classical and Jazz guitar as well as Music Ed. In addition to my 22 years of private lesson experience, I have 2 years of classroom experience teaching general music in elementary schools. I believe it is my years as a student and instructor that enable me to be an effective teacher, having had learned what worked for me as a student, and what has shown to work as a teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
I cater my lesson to the individual. I like for students to have a structured practice routine and working knowledge of music and their instrument, but it has to be fun. I have students who learn Classical, rock, and Jazz. Each lesson is different. Some people just want to be able to play their favorite songs by a camp fire, and others want to go on to perform at Carnegie Hall. I enjoy teaching both lessons and put forth the same enthusiasm for each one. You get out of the guitar or bass what you put into it in terms of learning and practicing. The level of achievement is up to you, I will help guide you to meet your goals regardless of how large or small they are.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Spare music room: guitars, amps, bass; computer with recording software, ProTools seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have all the equipment necessary. I would like the student to have an instrument, but if not I can provide one for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
I'm really pretty versatile. Over 18 years of teaching anywhere from 80 to 100 students a week will do that.

You may expect a great learning atmosphere and having some fun at the same time I use a variety of books and lessons to determine the level and playing style of each student. I feel the ability to read music is essential to the learning process although it is sometimes a benefit to learn by ear which I also have the means to do. I lead by example so that a student may be able to hear the detailed sound that a percussionist can aim for. Everyone learns at a different pace or ability so it is important to the student with proper guidance to feel comfortable and encouraged.
