At age I 12 picked up a guitar and fell in love with the instrument. I began with an obsession with Metallica and related bands, which really inspired me to play along and learn that genre of music. That later evolved to a big interest in classical and jazz music as well as an interest in music theory. I believe the pitfall of a lot of musicians learning music theory “limits” you as a musician, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Whether you want to write, play in a band or just noodle around there’s a spot for you!

I have studied under Mark Simons of the San Francisco Guitar quartet from 2008 -2010 and completed the music program at Diablo Valley College in June of 2010, which includes extensive coursework in Music theory, Piano and Guitar. Since 2011 I have been a Jazz Guitar Performance Major at Cal State East Bay where I will complete and receive a BA in music. I started playing guitar when I was in the 8th grade. At that time I was into punk, and as I got older I moved into listening to classic rock, then blues, then all sorts of jazz and jam bands, and now classical and sacred art. And my playing of the guitar has following the same trajectory: I played in the style I listened to. One common thread through all of this has been an, at first unconscious, but now fully conscious focus on the art of improvisation.

Improvisation is central in my own playing, and what I deliberately bring my students to do. And this is not something vainly individualistic. Hello everyone! My name is Vinnie, and I am a San Francisco Bay-Area native, and have been an active member in the local music scene for the past decade. A recent graduate from San Jose State University, I earned both a MA & BM in Jazz Studies Performance (also holds AA form Cabrillo College in music), and studied with one of the most in-demand SF Bay-Area drummers, Jason Lewis. My music education began at age 8 when, after a year of pestering my parents, I got my first guitar. My self-taught forays began casually at first, until I was introduced to the likes of Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton (the Cream years) and then later, Frank Marino, John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, and Allan Holdsworth. By age 15, it was "all about the guitar: eat-sleep-school-guitar," with many countless hours burning the midnight oil, deciphering the solos of my heroes. I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area after high school and began studying guitar under the mentor-ship of virtuoso Marc Bonilla (who has worked with such luminaries as Ronnie Montrose, Derek Sherinian, Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple). Bonilla has since moved to L.A. to pursue an impressive career as a film and T.V. composer, while I stayed on in the Bay Area as full time working guitarist/studio musician/composer/teacher.

I graduated from the Musicians Institute in '07,and currently perform in the popular band Tainted Love. Hello! Music has consumed me from a very young age, and has been a defining force every since. I started singing in Kindergarten, and began playing the viola, cello, and saxaphone in middle school. During high school, while performing in every vocal and band solo and ensemble I could, it became very clear that I wanted to pursue music in college. I attended Hastings College, a private liberal arts college in the heart of Nebraska, where I received my Bachelor's of Music in Vocal Performance. During college, and since, I have had a private music studio teaching students piano, voice, and a little guitar from ages 5 to 87, so I have seen a great deal of talent over the years. I enjoy all ages and genders, but having been a male in music I am aware of the stigma young males have regarding music.
