I took Piano lessons from 3rd grade through my first year of college. I worked my way through school playing for my high school chorus, in college playing for a small country church on Sundays, and playing for other family events, weddings and funerals. I earned a Bachelor's Degree of Interdisciplinary Studies with a Concentration in Education in August of 1996 from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. I participated in the University Singers and continue to play as often as I can just for fun.

From my earliest years in piano, I have loved the escape music provided for me. During times of joy and of sadness, it has been a constant friend and my love of music continues to grow. As a trained educator, I have seen the proven success piano can give to students of all ages. When taking piano lessons in my home studio, the student can expect at a 30 minute lesson, 15 minutes of playing and 15 minutes of theory. I use the Bastien Series books for both playing and theory. During the last five minutes of the lesson, we discuss a historical aspect of music relating to what the student is learning at that time, i.e. usually discussing a certain composer. I also include a snack for little ones learning the piano during this time. I try to make it fun because the time does go by fast.

BJ began playing the violin in the 5th grade in Virginia Beach. In middle school, he volunteered to play cello and fell in love with the sound. He went on to study at James Madison University as a music education and cello performance major. In addition to studying cello at JMU, BJ also studied violin, viola, string bass, piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, drums, and took three years of voice lessons. BJ began his teaching career during college in 2007 at Shenandoah Academy High School and Elementary school where he taught private lessons and started a strings program, while also keeping up a private violin and cello studio in the Shenandoah Valley. After James Madison University, he taught high school vocal classes and private violin lessons in the Bronx, NY. BJ has performed in various places nationally as well as internationally in China and Greece. Music has been an integral part of my world, playing a major role in both my personal and professional life. I embrace the chance to be immersed in it, to share my enthusiasm for and expertise in the area of the music education experience, promoting creative development and student performance skills.

I am an original New Yorker, but have lived in Virginia Beach for the past 12 years. I began studying piano at the age of 8 and have not stopped playing since. It is a gift and a joy to be able to share my love of music performance with people of all ages and abilities. I have also sung in many choirs in addition to performing professionally on the piano and the guitar, both as a soloist and ensemble member.

I rejoice in the success that I see in my students as they learn and gain appreciation for the gift of music. They become more and more eager to share and more and more open to the possibilities ahead.

The area of Music Education is indeed the most fulfilling teaching experience to me. In general, I think back on my music classes and experienced the greatest joy imaginable because of giving insight to students and imparting a vision of musical excellence. Starting with fundamentals and rudimentary methods of teaching, encompassed with love, trust, and virtue imparted to the student, did, spark the greatest student-teacher relationships. To give a student liberty to pursue their dreams while undergoing their levels of abilities, accomplishments and development, is the ultimate achievement and desire of my heart. I currently hold a B.S. Degree in Music Education. Also, I held first chair flute in the 590th Air Force Band of the East, McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey.

Bryan M. (M.M.E.) is the Music Coordinator and Front Ensemble Caption Head for Dominion Storm Indoor Drumline, an independent open class ensemble from Virginia Beach, Virginia. WGI reviewers have said his music, “turned UD Arena into an uptown dance club... with a driving shuffle beat which had the crowd clapping along.”

Currently, Bryan is an active performer and educator in the Hampton Roads, Southeastern Virginia region. His positions include: instructor of music theory and history at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia; director of the hand percussion ensemble HAND DRUM ALCHEMY; percussionist with The Tidewater Winds concert band; drummer for the professional night club band COOL CADILLAC; and drummer for Angora Tribal- a dance troupe from Williamsburg, Virginia.
