I specialize in two instruments, piano and trumpet, because I just couldn’t choose one over the other!

The piano was my first love. I started playing the piano at the age of 4, mostly by ear, but I studied for over 10 years, participating in various regional and national competitions, earning top marks. By the time Band was offered at school, I was playing piano in the jazz bands and marimba in the concert band. However, I was also lured toward the trumpet at this same time. So I began studying the trumpet and playing throughout high school. Both instruments inspired my decision to major in music at California State University, Northridge. I continued my studies in both piano and trumpet, majoring in both Music Education and Jazz Studies. I've been teaching piano, cello, voice and theory in Los Angeles for over thirty years, helping students develop their particular interests in music and to encourage them to reach their personal goals. I love the classics but many of my students want to play popular music, contemporary sounds and jazz and that is fine too. I received my BA in music at UCLA and a Master's at Cal State Northridge. I conduct vocal and bell choirs, run a concert series, play chamber music, sing in a band and teach in the Community College District in addition to running my private studio.

I joined my first band playing bass at the age of 13, soon moving into my high school marching band, orchestra, and jazz band. My name is Mike T. and I'm a professional musician of 16 years. I started playing piano at the age of 8 and studied classical, rock, pop, ragtime, blues, and impressionistic styles. At the age of 11 I got my first drumset and started jamming to bands like Metallica, Foo Fighters, Blink 182, NOFX, Black Sabbath and of course Led Zepplin. I then attended Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA where I honed my skills as a drummer and overall musician. Music has always been my true passion. When I was five, I started playing piano using my attuned hearing. Improvising music and utilizing a great number of its variations gave me a great deal of pleasure and became my second nature. When teaching my students, I strive to have them inherit my skills and passion for this wonderful form of art.
Music is a lifetime source of enjoyment and one of the means of developing many important skills such as self-discipline, concentration, imagination, creativity and self- confidence. That's what I have experienced from my childhood through adult.

I received my BA in Music from UCSB and my MA in Humanities (emphasis in music history) from CSUDH. I have a piano teacher for many years, and many of my students have gone on to become professional musicians themselves. I am a member of MTAC, am a Certificate of Merit adjudicator, and am on the editorial board of the MTAC state magazine. Tony has been performing professionaly for over 35 years. When he arrived in Los Angeles in 1969 he studied guitar with virtuoso Jimmy Stewart. Later, he studied with master guitarist George Van Eps.

Tony played guitar with many top recording artist in the mid 1970's. Later, he started to teach formerly at the John Waltrip Music School in Arcadia California. From then on, he set up "Music With Frets," and began to teach privately.

In addition, he is teaching 6th and 7th grade guitar classes at St. Cyril of Jerusalem School in Encino. Tony is a bonded and certified by the LAPD and FBI. Tony finds it very rewarding in helping beginner and advanced students to learn the beautiful music the guitar can make.

As Tony's teacher, George Van Eps taught him to think of the guitar as a "Lap Piano" so Tony does the same. The guitar is a versatile chordal and melodic instrument, and should be taught as such.
