About Me

Charity has studied voice and theater privately for more than 15 years as well as attending Shenandoah University and graduating Summa Cum Laude with a BA in theatre from George Mason University. Charity is also a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing as well as a Music Together trained teacher. Currently Charity teaches music to preschoolers at the Montessori Children's House of Loudoun two days a week. Charity has been teaching private voice lessons for a few years, combining her years of vocal study and theatre experience to develop students into healthy singers and good performers as well. She has been passionate about singing since she was a child and she is excited to be passing on her knowledge to children, teenagers and adults. In her spare time Charity devotes many hours to Historic Preservation initiatives. She is a member of the Charles Town Historic Landmarks Commission and is currently restoring her historic home in downtown Charles Town.

Lesson Details

My voice lessons teach students healthy singing techniques in a supportive environment. Singing is very personal, so I strive to encourage each student's personal strengths while working to break bad singing habits at the same time. I believe that everyone has the potential to develop a healthy and pleasant singing voice. Students in my studio improve their singing by learning to integrate the voice, mind and body into one seamless instrument, thus improving breath control and diction, increasing vocal range and improving overall musicianship. Over time my students achieve confidence in their singing that almost always expands into their daily lives.

I accept all levels of students from beginner to advanced and I teach men, women and children. My lessons cover all singing styles including classical, jazz and pop, but my favorite is musical theatre. I encourage my students to not just learn the notes and words of a song but to also learn to be a musical artist through lyric analysis and enhanced diction. Because of my background in theatre, I stress that students not only understand what they are singing intellectually but also emotionally so they can "act" the song out as they sing. This helps the student to become a great performer in addition to becoming a great singer.

Students are expected to make a weekly commitment to lessons to ensure maximum growth. While lessons are important, the time that a student puts into practice between voice lessons determines the success level of vocal study. I can give you the tools to become a great singer but the student is ultimately responsible for their own success...

I took voice from Charity for a short time to improve my singing since I sing with my church's worship team. I thought I was just going to learn new technique to make my voice sound better and give me more breath control. What I received was so much more! Charity is such a gifted teacher! Her encouragement and support helped me to grow my confidence so much that it spilled over into my personal and professional life. Everyone should have a cheerleader like Charity in his/her life!

Charity was an excellent voice teacher and has a beautiful voice. She was always very encouraging and would push me to what I thought were my limits but I could always go a little farther. I can honestly say that my techniques have improved and I can now identify when I'm singing incorrectly and the best part of that is now I know how to fix it. She had good judgment on what types of songs would be good for my voice and I learned several Jazz, Operatic and Theatrical pieces that I truly enjoy singing.
