I have been working as a freelance musician and private instructor in Chicago for fifteen years. During this time I have been hired to perform Jazz, Rock, R/B, and world music. As an instructor I have maintained a studio of five to twenty students on a weekly basis. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Percussion Performance, and a Master of Music degree from De Paul University in Jazz Studies.

Michael has worked with kids for 10 years in schools and arts programs to find fun and their best self through performance. He has taught orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and music theory in the public schools, while performing in local ensembles in and around the city. He also has studied drama, voice and movement and believes all these skills help in expressing yourself--no matter what pieces you want to play!

I have been teaching guitar for over a decade and love doing it. Before we get into how you can succeed as a guitarist here is a little background about me. I grew up in a small town and began playing guitar at age 12. I was taught a few chords from friends and tried to learn songs from tabs on the Internet. After a couple years I realized the need for formal training, so I began taking classical guitar lessons. I was introduced to formal music instruction and my abilities really blossomed. I am a professional Opera Singer, in Minneapolis from New York City. While that's my "job title," don't let it fool you. I have also spent a number of years touring with jazz, blues, and rock and roll bands as a pianist and guitarist, so my style comes from everywhere. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance with a minor in Piano Performance from Hope College in Holland, MI, and my Master's in Vocal Performance comes from The Ohio State University. I am a professionally managed singer, and have worked on a number of international operatic stages as a baritone. I have been on faculty at NYU-Tisch School of the Arts, and the New School for the Performing Arts in New York City. I have a diverse, mixed-up, wonderful background. I have wanted to do something with music and performance since I was 3-years-old. I have been able to foster that goal through work in the professional film and television industry as well as professional theatre (and no, the word is not misspelled despite what spell-check would have you believe and I would love to explain why.). However, my greatest love has always been teaching. My education includes training in theatre, film, television, music, voice, and communication. I received my BA in Fine Arts and Humanities from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and my MS in Communication Studies at Texas Christian University. I have Bachelor of Arts in Music from Arizona State University, where I specialized in Guitar performance. I'm a firm believer that playing music and learning an instrument should be fun, and I try to emphasize that in every lesson I teach. The curriculum that I use is entirely tailored to the student, based off of their needs and skill level, as well as the style of music they listen to. I have a simple approach to learning a new instrument, you get what you put into it.

Melissa has been singing all of her life. She began her vocal training at a very cute age, learning every song she heard, and passionately performing them for friends and family. She later went on to pursue a formal education in Classical Vocal Performance & Jazz technique from California State University, Los Angeles. While completing her Bachelors degree, Melissa was fortunate to have worked with many established artists, bands and producers of various styles, including jazz, blues, rock, pop, soul & funk. These collaborations have allowed her to hone her own voice and successfully pursue professional work.

Most recently, Melissa has enjoyed the opportunity to lead elementary school choirs locally. She will have completed a Masters in Education with a Teaching Credential in 2012, and further, plans to pursue the field of Musical Therapy.
