Farobag C. Homer Glen, IL

About Me

Music Director of the Chicago Philharmonia Orchestra since 1985, Farobag has also served as Managing Director of the University of Chicago Performing Artists Series from 1989 through 2002 and principal conductor of its resident professional ensembles. A skilled interpreter of Baroque literature as well, Farobag continues in his capacity as Artistic Advisor to the Baroque Masterplayers, a virtuoso ensemble that concatenates period performance techniques with modern instruments thus creating a unique voice within the realm of 17th and 18th- century repertoire.

A double graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, Farobag studied under Anastasia Jempelis, a pioneer of Suzuki violin pedagogy in the United States. In addition to the Suzuki curriculum, he is also associated with the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program that sets a national standard of musical achievement in various fields.

Befitting his penchant for encouraging artistic interest amongst younger members of his community, Farobag is also the principal conductor of the Zoroastrian Symphony Orchestra that offers a unique mixture of young and seasoned professionals sitting side-by-side in a strictly professional setting. Since the year 2000, the ZSO has staged highly successful performances at various venues in Houston, Chicago, and Toronto. A New Year's eve performance in Los Angeles is scheduled for 2014.

Having also taken graduate-level coursework in educational psychology, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Chicago, Farobag offers tutelage in various areas of elementary and secondary education as well as in SAT, ACT and GRE test preparation.

Additionally, as a certified Reiki Master, therapeutic and/or educational sessions are also extended to those who may be inclined to alternative healing techniques.

Sheer technique is necessary but insufficient to play an instrument well. Aural skills, that include the study of functional tonality and voice-leading are important factors that impart musicality. This is of great import if the prospective musician wants the audience to truly enjoy his or her performance !

Whether it be the 3 Rs or preparation in the performing arts, a remarkable instructor must go well beyond the subject matter at hand and help imbue the student with a spirit of wonder that, in due time, will foster enthusiasm necessary for excellence.

A child emulates and learns to communicate in his or her mother-tongue through a supporting and nurturing environment. Likewise, a student needs to be sufficiently motivated to embrace learning in a familiar supportive manner.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lesson take place in the living room. Driveway parking. No pets.

*** Travel Equipment ***
None; I do expect a reasonably good piano / keyboard at a student's home.

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers marked as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25
lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.Traditional and Suzuki-based education. Performance and musicality training is open to all instrumentalists.

Sally is a professional classical singer in the Chicago area. An Atlanta native, she holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Georgia State University and a Master of Music degree from The University of Arizona. A lifelong musician, she has experience in many styles including classical piano, classical voice, and Broadway-style voice.

Sally has been seen in numerous productions, including Candide, Annie, The Marriage of Figaro, The Wizard of Oz, Suor Angelica, and many others.

Lessons with Sally are always fun and engaging! No "mean music teacher" here! The skills that we learn through music study go well beyond playing an instrument or singing. Sally cultivates not only musical skill, but perseverance, working though problems, and self-confidence. Students will build their knowledge of music theory and sight reading through the repertoire. Vocal health is emphasized, but lessons are tailored to each students desires and interests.

*** Lesson Details ***
A lesson with Sally will be engaging and enjoyable. As one who in their youth experienced the "mean music teacher" she endeavors to make each lesson a success in some way. Voice lessons will emphasize proper breathing and singing posture along with vocal technique. Sally believes that one can sing healthily no matter the style.

Piano students will receive classical instruction along with fun pieces to show off with. Music is fun, lessons should be fun too!

Beginning music students will receive a good musical foundation, from reading music into basic music theory, integrated into the lessons in a fun and interesting way.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring my personal books for instruction with me initially, but students must purchase their own books and music. I expect students to have a keyboard or piano available for both voice and piano lessons. I do prefer to teach in an area that is readily accessible to parents.

I do have a professional quality recorder that I can bring, but students must provide their own SD card.

*** Specialties ***
Voice- Classical, Broadway, Pop
In teaching voice, my goal is to teach the student how to sing in their desired style while emphasizing vocal health.

Piano- Classical, Pop/rock
In teaching piano, my goal is to steer students toward what is rewarding and enjoyable for them. For some, that is playing Mozart and Beethoven, for others that is playing Billy Joel and Leonard Cohen.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are designed to better the performances and techniques of a singer, dancer, or actor.
Techniques such as breathing, diction, pitch, tone, posture, rhythm, smoothness, and stage presence will be practiced. I do my best to develop lessons that are tailored to each student based on their individual needs. Lessons start simply with gentle vocal exercises based on humming and open vowel sounds. Each student can expect to be challenged through exciting a stimulating exercises. I also teach techniques to improve posture, poise and vocal performance. I enjoy using simple scales to improve pitch and volume while also working on clarifying the students voice. A students performance, whether they aspire to be a performer, teacher, or just enjoy performing should have a positive self portrait of themselves. We will work on building confidence so we as performers can take pride in ourselves and what we represent. My students are expected to practice outside of the lesson. I also encourage them to keep a practice journal of when and how long they have practiced. It helps the students to trouble shoot areas of their performance and take the opportunity to ask questions during the next lesson.
My students and I will strive to
- To develop an understanding of basic music theory.
- To take responsibility for their musical and vocal growth.
- To reach for improvement and not perfection.
- To work on the memorization of a performance.
- To try their hardest with each lesson.
- To come to each lesson with an idea of what they would like to achieve.
- To constantly sing correct pitches and rhythms in all songs/performances.
- To practice correct posture and breathe support.
Most importantly,
- To enjoy their performance and learn to embrace the natural talents they are given.

About Me

Greetings and welcome to my Studio Profile,

As a professional singer and teacher, I strive for artistic excellence and customer satisfaction. I want you to be excited about your voice and the progress you are making and will do everything I can to support your growth and progress. I have 10 years of experience in private teaching and would be delighted to apply this knowledge to help you reach your musical goals, whether auditioning for your school musical, preparing for college auditions, joining a church choir, or auditioning for an opera company.
I teach a variety of musical styles including classical, musical theater, jazz, and some pop. My goal is for you to discover ease and freedom in your singing, increase your range and vocal stamina, introduce you to different styles of music, and ultimately equip you to sing with confidence and meet your personal musical goals.

I graduated with highest honors with a Bachelor's degree in Voice Performance from University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and recently completed my Master's degree in Voice Pedagogy and Performance from Westminster Choir College, graduating with distinction. My studies have taken me abroad to performing programs in Austria, Italy, Serbia, and Canada. I am an active performer and am experienced singing opera, classical music, jazz, musical theater, choral music, a Capella and Baroque chamber music. I am currently singing with the Chicago Master Singers and recently toured with them to Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia.

In addition to private voice lessons, I am trained to tutor music theory, music history, sight reading, beginning cello, and Singing diction for Latin, Italian, French, and German.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your musical goals in person!

Please feel free to contact TakeLessons with any questions.

Warmly,
Sara L.
