Joseph (Joey) A. is a Graduate of Portland State University, recipient of Bachelor of Music degree in music composition. Joey is an experienced performer of jazz guitar especially swing music and gypsy jazz guitar techniques with emphasis on composition, improvisational techniques, and music theory. Joey has played guitar since the age of twelve, self taught and playing in many rock bands starting at age fourteen before going on to study music in an academic setting.

At Mt. Hood Community College, Joey learned how to improvise jazz under guitarist Neal Grandstaff, performing in several jazz combos; and also performed a concerto for two mandolins (transcribed for guitar) by Antonio Vivaldi with the string ensemble under the direction of Dr. Marshall Tuttle. I'm a passionate, fun-loving guitarist that specializes in jazz and funk, but I enjoy working with all genres, depending on what YOU - the student - wants! Music is an exciting adventure that I want to share that with all students and music lovers alike, be it through one-on-one-lessons, impromptu jam sessions, or performances.I received my degree in music performance from Knox College in Galesburg, IL, where I performed with various groups and discovered the joys of teaching. After receiving multiple awards and distinctions, performing with modern jazz greats, and studying under some of the finest musicians in the Midwest, I'm eager to share and develop my knowledge with other students, and through such reveal how much fun guitar can be.

A Professional Musician, I am now happy to pass my skills and knowledge on to the next generations so that they may have ALL the fun and enjoyment of music in their lives, that I had in mine.

I have toured the East Coast Venues (NYC to Key West) for 30 years, and produced 10 CDs, and have 3 EMMY AWARDS for sound track music for the EXPEDITION FLORIDA SERIES, Nature Documentaries. They were funded by the University of Florida, Museum of Natural History, and the Tourist Development Council of Alachua County, Florida.

I play acoustic and electric six string guitars, electric bass guitar, piano and keyboards, percussion and hand drums. I majored in Flute and Voice at UF and have spent my entire life immersed in the world of music.

Chuck recently moved to Portland, Oregon from Gainesville, Florida, where he was a staple of the music teaching and performing community for more than 25 years. Originally from Chicago, Chuck completed his BA in Music History and Masters of Music (MM) at the University of Florida. Chuck became obsessed with The Beatles when he began piano lessons at age 12. His first attempt at composing was actually improvising melodies over the ending chords to "Hey Jude". Along with playing Beatles tunes Chuck learned classic standards from a set of Reader's Digest Songbooks inherited from his grandmother.

Chuck has performed with classic rock, top 40, funk, R&B, and jazz groups, and has served as an opening act for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and legendary Texas bluesman Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. As a soloist he's played classical music, blues, jazz, and original compositions. Before devoting himself to music full time, he worked for 8 years as a radio announcer on WUFT-FM...

I specialize in rock, singer songwriter, experimental, electronic, and popular music; with a B.A. in music and a master's degree in education (secondary language arts). My background in music theory has aided me over the years in my passion for song writing and recording. I have been involved in a variety of creative projects, ranging from concept albums, to experimental rock bands, to the Portland open mic circuit.

I remember sitting in lessons where the instructor would spend more time showing off than focusing on my progress! I use this unfortunate woe to illustrate what not to do as an instructor. I would characterize my own approach to teaching as being student centered. I spent last year student teaching in the language arts classroom and learned quickly that the key to engaging students is knowing them--establishing a relationship of trust where students feel free to learn in a safe environment. I started teaching music lessons at the age of eleven, in after school programs. I continued to do this for many years, driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at youth groups and local Boys and Girls Clubs.

I went on to study Music Education at Oregon State University and Guitar Performance at the University of Oregon. At each of these Universities I taught students my age, and a few professors, as well as locals in each town.

I continue to teach in Portland, and volunteer at two recording studios around town. I can and will provide references to each new student upon request.
