I am an award winning, Pi Kappa Lambda honoree, summa cum laude graduate of Syracuse University's school of Visual and Performing Arts-Setnor School of Music, where I received a four-year music director's talent scholarship.
I am classically trained and perform all styles of music, from classical to jazz to pop. I play saxophone, flute, clarinet, and piano. I perform professionally with a large Philadelphia based entertainment company, as well as with local bands in the Philadelphia area.
I teach piano, saxophone, flute, and clarinet to all ages and skill levels. I enjoy working with students who just want to play for fun, as well as those who are looking to compete in local competitions. I have been involved in County, District, Regional, and All-States bands, concerto/jazz competitions, music composition contests, and the Youth Orchestra of Bucks County's Wind Ensemble.

*I also have a special piano lesson program developed just for preschoolers ages 3 and up. Learning music at a young age helps develop the part of the brain involved with thinking, memory, language, math, and creativity.

My music program has a reward system, age appropriate games, worksheets and other fun activities. Your child will never learn to play an instrument if they quit their lessons so I make sure that my lessons are so enjoyable that they never want to quit!!!
I have been taking private music lessons myself since I was 8 years old and have had many teachers over the years. From my experience, I have really learned what and what not to do when teaching a student. I will provide my own students with a custom teaching style (books and curriculum vary from student to student) to fit their personal skill levels.
I want my students learn music that they are the most interested in playing, which I feel is an important part of the lesson. I also will make sure they build up their theory skills (note names, key signatures, rhythms, chord names, etc.) and scales as well to compliment the music they are learning.
I am always very friendly and patient with my students. I make sure they are learning at a pace that is best for them and making progress in a fun way! I recommend that students purchase books that are appropriate to their skill levels. Students can either buy the books/supplies from a music store or directly from me. I have a special piano program specially designed for preschoolers, as well as adults and seniors!

My home studio is equipped with a piano, CD player to listen to music and "play-alongs," music stands, and seating for parents if they wish to stay. I have my own instruments (flute, clarinet, alto/tenor saxophone) so that I can teach by example.

Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups.
Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.
He is a current adjudicator with Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.
Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.
*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.
I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.
For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.
My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

At a young age, I found my passion through listening to jazz and classical music, and experiencing the personal connections they create. From performing to teaching, I like to share my passion for music with those around me.
I am currently in my fourth year of undergraduate studies at Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance. Besides performing in an academic setting, I also perform with my own groups, and have experience in original composition/songwriting. My teaching experience ranges from private lessons and jazz workshops to summer music camps and early childhood music classes. I love teaching and will probably never stop!

My lessons are taught with a personal and energetic approach leaving the student excited and eager to further explore music. I always want to make sure that the student is having fun, too!
