About Greg

My passion for teaching is as strong as my desire for personal musical growth. I have been teaching students of all ages in both individual and group settings for over five years. I believe that a one-on-one teacher to student relationship is the best way for the student to grow not only in the subject being taught, but emotionally as well. It is my goal for every one of my students to learn some life lesson or become acquainted with a non-musical philosophy through the study of music. From my personal life-long study of music I have learned about the importance of listening, dedication, compassion, respect, and of teaching oneself, and if I am able to pass on just a fraction of this experiential knowledge, then the student has found success.

Greg has been my fiddle teacher for a year now. His patience and expert guidance have helped to increase my confidence and skill level. We move logically and painlessly back and forth between new music and technique. I'm now at the point that I am beginning to see how it all works and, thus, to be able to figure out some tunes just by hearing them. Pretty exciting. I look forward to our weekly sessions.

Top-Notch Fiddle Teacher

Greg is himself a top-notch musician, but, more to the point here, he's a top-notch teacher. He's easy going and positive, but he keeps you moving along and he's clear and constructive when bumps in the road occur (as they frequently do in my case). I think I have made a lot of progress in a relatively short time, especially since I'm in my 60s and haven't touched a fiddle since I was a pre-teen. I recommend Greg highly.

I've been teaching fiddle for about 20 years. Learn delightful fiddle tunes by note and/or by ear. Learn how to back up and improvisational techniques. Fun!

About Susan

Hi, my name is Sue L. I teach music and perform professionally with Mango Nights as their arranger and violinist. I also play cello and bass with other groups. I earned my music degree from Portland State University in 2006, graduating with honors. In 1996 I won two Medals of Distinction for violin performance and music theory and then in 2001 I received a Merit Award from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, London, England for viola performance. I've been blessed to be able to perform in a variety of ensembles and genres such as musical theater pit orchestras, string quartets, the Vancouver Symphony, and rock, jazz, tango, Middle Eastern and blue grass/folk bands.

My biggest thrill is to be able to transmit culture to the younger generation through ...

Very Encoluraging

Susan is so encouraging & gets excited because I'm excited to learn to play the piano. She's very patient with me...which is a huge plus! She also has a way of breaking the music language down so that I can relate to it. It's sort of like word association. That works!

helpful and flexible

Susan is a wonderful instructor. She was flexible with my crazy schedule. She gave me enough work to not get boerd between lessons but not to much work. I always look forward to my lessons.

I use many tune books from many traditions to teach fiddle. We learn equally by ear and by notation. Sligo, Scottish, Metis, Appalachian, Louisiana and Texas bowing are all different, and I will show you how. Jigs, reels and hornpipes lead into rags and blues. Learning the fiddle should be like learning to sing. In a way, the beginner already knows how, as if from a dream. It's too much fun, and it's not fair that so few get to feel what it's like to make a wooden box sing!

About Thomas

Hi, I'm Tom Vredevoogd. After an award winning high school jazz band career I went on to earn an MFA in painting from Ohio University. I couldn't stay away from music, and I continued to study traditional, jazz and classical violin and guitar with many fine private teachers. I have been a licensed preschool teacher since 2002. I have also been teaching music classes/lessons, on and off, since 1997. Many of my students have been successes in orchestras, bands and contests. I have also won numerous awards in major fiddle contests. I do love to see students enjoy learning as much as I have. I currently play jazz violin and accordion with Pink Martini co-founder Lyndee Mah and her band.
