Hi! I'm currently a Music Education Student at CU Boulder specializing in strings. My primary instruments are double bass and electric bass and I gig often in many different ensembles from Jazz combos to rock and experimental electronic groups. I live for music, and I've been teaching since I was a sophomore in high school. I believe deeply in the power of music to enrich and fulfill lives and that participating in the creation of it is not only fun but can allow us to express our innermost selves. I look forward to helping you on your path, whether you are a high school student preparing All-State and College auditions, have a young child that could benefit from learning an instrument, or are an adult who always wanted--yet were never quite able--to learn how to play music.

I can provide some music materials, tuners, metronomes, amps, cables, and in some instances instruments (e.g. a student practices bass at school and they don't have the income to have one for themselves). However, I generally expect students to have an instrument (or access to one at school) they are taking lessons on, because if they don't they can't practice, and each instrument requires a little familiarity to be able to play well.
*** Specialties ***
Instrumentally I specialize in Jazz, Funk, Rock, Metal, and Classical styles. It is important to understand the components of as many styles as you can so you can broaden your horizons and open up different worlds of music and influence. Being able to play several different ways will bring students, and people, more in touch with who they are and what they like as humans and musicians. It also opens up more performance opportunities!
I have a strong background in Music Theory, and can teach everything from Classical to Jazz Harmony, Counterpoint, and atonal/20th Century styles. I have written several pieces both for popular/Jazz groups and Classical ensembles, and can help with the nuances of arranging pieces, voice leading, orchestration and reading musical notation.
I have a B.M. from Berklee College of Music with an emphasis in Folk, Bluegrass, and traditional music but can teach any style.
Would you like to have a better ear? Be able to hear chord changes quicker and translate that to your instrument? Or would you like to have a better grasp on theory and how to translate that knowledge onto your instrument?
While attending Berklee, I taught all music theory subjects (jazz and traditional harmony), ear training, counterpoint, and songwriting through the school and was involved in the tutoring department.
Are you looking to develop your songwriting? Would you like to write better lyrics? Or use a deeper theoretical knowledge to find new writing techniques and your unique voice?
While living in Boston, I received accolades and awards for songwriting from Berklee and the Boston music community and can pass along harmonic and lyrical techniques to allow you to become a better writer.
Whether you are new to music or a longtime musician looking for something new, I can provide material and methods to help you meet your goals and advance your musicianship.
I am fluent in Guitar and pedal steel guitar and have taught beginning to advanced students in all age groups.
If you want to expand your knowledge of music theory, improve your ear for hearing changes and complex chords, learn new songwriting techniques, and get to new places on your instrument get in touch!
*** Lesson Details ***
I like to tailor my lessons to meet long term student goals and provide them with simple and effective weekly materials to make sure that no part of the learning process is too overwhelming.
I give my students a strong technical foundation and provide them with materials they can easily work through and that will reinforce that new material as we work through it.
But most importantly, I make sure my students never lose the passion that brought them to music and give them an environment to face challenges and discover new aspects of the craft to incite musical and personal growth.

My name is Austin M. and I am a music education major at Metropolitan State University of Denver. I have been in multiple ensembles in the music program including the wind ensemble, brass quartet, the symphonic band, and the symphony orchestra. I am currently a member of the Arapahoe Philharmonic in Littleton. CO. I have marched with the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps based here in Denver. I am also a marching band music arranger for multiple high schools here in Colorado, Texas and Indianapolis.
My current trumpet teacher is Dr. Michael Hengst. I am in my junior year at Metro and am starting my education courses to complete my degree. I have been under the direction Dr. David Kish and Dr. Brandon Matthews for the past two years.
I have taught at many high schools during their marching band seasons and during their regular year. I have been teaching private lessons for a year now!
My lessons create a great professional relationship between myself and my students. I try to give my students challenging but fun ways to become a better musician. My lessons are always taught with thoughtful planning depending on how much weekly practice my students are doing and I do my very best to reach every need of my students. My goal is to give my students the opportunity to reach every possibility they seek and of course create beautiful music.
My passion of music has driven me to share it with other wonderful people and I hope to be doing this for the rest of my life.
Thank you for stopping by my page and I can't wait to start creating music with you!
I will contact you before our first lesson to gain a little knowledge about you so I can plan accordingly for our first lesson.
