Wanna Play Music? Take Part in Music Monday on May 3!

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

WannaPlayMusicWeek10During the week of May 3-7, musicians, schools, and other organizations across the country will come together in support of the fourth annual National Wanna Play Music Week, sponsored by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM).  This week-long celebration highlights the importance of music education programs in schools and promotes the benefits of playing music for people of all ages and skill levels.  NAMM is also a TakeLessons organizational partner, which is why we are proud to support this event and power the lesson locator tool on the official Wanna Play Music website.

The week will kick off with “Music Monday” on May 3, an event in which schools, community and professional organizations will perform one piece of music simultaneously at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, 11 a.m. Mountain Time, 12 p.m. Central Time, and 1 p.m. Eastern Time.  NAMM hopes that by having everyone sing the same song at the same time, music will transcend all genres and unite people through the melody and the act of performing the piece together.

NAMM is also encouraging people to pick up an instrument of their choice and play any time on May 3 as part of the Music Monday celebration.  This is the sixth year that NAMM has supported Music Monday, which is also hosted by the Coalition for Music Education in Canada and has grown to more than 2,000 schools since its inception.  You can register your school or organization as a participant in Music Monday by e-mailing musicmonday@namm.org.

If you plan to take part in Music Monday on May 3, tell us how you’ll be getting involved!  Will you be participating in the group song, or playing an instrument?

Support Music Education

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

As a proud partner of NAMM, we support their stance on supporting the arts regarding the "No Child Left Behind Act." Here is their latest positioning:

On August 18, U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan spoke with the Support Music Coalition regarding his letter about the importance of Arts Education.

Tell your Members of Congress that when the No Child Left Behind Act is reauthorized, Congress should provide flexibility in the law for music and arts programs.

Every child in America deserves to have a complete, well-rounded education that includes music and arts education. These programs develop and foster skills to help students meet the ever-growing demands of a 21st Century workforce.Music Class

We must call upon Congress to make a strong commitment to our children. By reauthorizing the No Child Left Behind Act to include music and arts education as "core" academic subjects, our elected officials can make music and arts education a reality for every single American child.

Tell your Members of Congress that support for music and arts education should be strengthened in the reauthorization of NCLB to provide flexibility for all decision makers at the state and local level to include rigorous and sequential programs so that students can continue to reap the benefits of school-based music education.

We at TakeLessons hope that all children can have the same musical education that has been available to previous generations. By supporting the arts you are supporting every child's opportunity to experience the arts as an integral component to a well-rounded education.

Tech Updates to the TakeLessons Site

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Chuck and Jason - TakeLessons developers rockin' da house
(Chuck and Jason making things happen on the site)

As a public service announcement to all of our wonderful and fabulous users, we did a site upgrade last night. Here are the upgrades, changes, and additions:

New Feature

  • Did a Facebook integration launch. It’s still secretly hidden for a week or so until we do further testing on it. But it’s going to be very cool!
  • Changed wording on “subjects taught” in the application to all instructors to specify levels. We need them to be able to teach at both beginner and intermediate levels

Job Application and Hiring

  • We did a bunch of stuff here. It’s proprietary, so we can’t name it. But it’s cool and will help us hire better teachers in areas where we need them.

NAMM Logo
NAMM Partnership

  • As you may know, we signed an Agreement with NAMM to power a joint effort to help students find good instructors. This is coming along nicely.
  • Added phone number and website URL to NAMM search results

Bug Fixes
Thanks to all of you for reporting bugs. Here’s what we got fixed:

  • Fixed issues with lesson rescheduling through admin where first lesson discounts were being lost when the day/time was changed
  • Add full category list to the header of teacher profiles so potential student can quickly see them all
  • Fix to show student name (not billing contact name) under flex lessons list

Keep Rockin!
