8 Best San Francisco Bars With Live Music

Best live music bars in the San Francisco areaWhile the big-ticket venues will always be around to bring in headliners, it’s the bar scene that is the heart of music, especially in San Francisco. So where are some of the best bars in town to catch a live show? Here are the 8 best bars with live music that San Francisco has to offer:

The Saloon

The Saloon is one of the most well-known venues in San Francisco, as it is the oldest bar in the city, built in 1861. The Saloon hosts a live band every night, and is one of the most revered blues venues in town. Local and national acts make their way to The Saloon regularly to showcase their talent for packed houses.

Hemlock Tavern

At the Hemlock Tavern, start your night with a DJ from 6:30-8:30 p.m., and then stay for the local, national, and international touring musicians! The venue is located in the Lower Polk neighborhood, and while entry is free for the bar area, a cover charge typically applies for the bands playing in the back room.

The Plough and Stars

If you’re looking for authentic Irish music, the Plough and Stars is your go-to bar! Located on Clement Street, this bar offers a much lower cost for a night out for live music than most others in the city. Every night of the week offers a live local band, with an emphasis on Irish, but also many bluegrass and country bands.

Martuni’s

For a bit swankier of an evening, many people make their way to Martuni’s on Valencia Street. Located near the theater, it’s a hot spot for those who want to keep the classy evening going. Martinis are the specialty at Martuni’s, and in addition to the live music on most nights, they also offer a piano bar and open mic evenings throughout the month.

Amnesia

Every day offers a new experience at Amnesia, such as Bluegrass Nights (Mondays) and Jazz Nights (Wednesday). The rest of the week, there is a large range of styles from disco to folk. They’re not afraid to mix it up at Amnesia, so you’ll have a good time no matter when you stop by!

Bottom of the Hill

Located on 17th Street, Bottom of the Hill offers live music for fans of every genre, from alternative to punk to pop! Tickets can be purchased either in advance or at the door. There is always a performance scheduled, so any night is a good night to go.

The Riptide

Located just 20 minutes from downtown San Francisco, The Riptide is described as the “honky-tonk by the beach.” Since the building itself is nearly 75 years old, it has the feel of an old cigar bar or lounge. Bluegrass, country, blues, and jazz are the big genres here, but they do mix it up from time to time.

Maggie McGarry’s

Another popular Irish bar, Maggie McGarry’s is a full restaurant during the day, opening up to a large stage for live music every weekend. The music is mainly local and it’s always free to watch. Want to grace the stage yourself? Stop by their karaoke night every Wednesday.

When you’re looking for bars with live music in San Francisco, there is no shortage. Enjoy!
