Do Online Voice Lessons Work? The Surprising Truth

Online Voice LessonsDo online singing lessons actually work? Take it from our teacher Molly R., who teaches singing lessons in Hayward, CA. Read on as she explains the benefits, and how online lessons can work for you!

Many people dream of becoming a professional singer. After all, what could be more glamorous than performing in front of adoring fans and getting paid to do what you love? But becoming a professional singer takes years of practice and dedication.

And for many aspiring singers, the thought of taking traditional in-person voice lessons is simply too expensive or time-consuming.

So, the question remains: do online voice lessons work? Let’s take a look at the surprising truth.

Are Online Voice Lessons Worth It?

When it comes to learning how to sing, there are a lot of different free online voice lessons for beginners available. You can also take group classes, hire a private tutor, or even take online voice lessons. But are online voice lessons worth it? Here are some reasons why they might be the right choice for you:

  • They’re more convenient than in-person lessons. With online lessons, you can learn from the comfort of your own home and on your own schedule. This is especially helpful if you have a busy lifestyle or live in a rural area where it can be difficult to find a qualified singing teacher.
  • They’re usually more affordable than in-person lessons. Because you don’t have to pay for things like travel and studio time, online voice lessons are often more affordable than traditional lessons.
  • You can still get one-on-one attention. Just because you’re taking lessons online doesn’t mean you won’t get the same level of attention and personalized feedback as you would in an in-person lesson. In fact, some teachers may even prefer teaching online because it allows them to focus solely on you and your performance.
  • You’ll have access to a wider range of teachers. When you take lessons online, you’re not limited to teachers who live in your city or town. You can choose from a global pool of instructors, which gives you the opportunity to learn from some of the best vocal coaches in the world.
  • You can learn at your own pace. One of the great things about online voice lessons is that you can learn at your own pace and revisit concepts as often as you need to until you feel confident with them. This is particularly useful if you’re a beginner or if you’re working on mastering a new technique.

Overall, there are plenty of reasons to consider taking online voice lessons instead of traditional in-person ones. With the convenience, affordability, and flexibility they offer, it’s no wonder that more and more people are choosing this type of instruction.

Can You Take Voice Lessons Online?

Yes, you can! And there are lots of benefits to voice lessons online, particularly the best online voice lessons.

I’ve been teaching online voice lessons via Skype and FaceTime for a year now. Before I started, I had the same questions anyone else would have: How does this work? Will my students get as much out of these lessons as they do at in-person lessons?

I’m here to tell you that online lessons work beautifully and absolutely YES – students get every bit as much out of online lessons that they do traditional lessons…if not even more!

First of all, let’s talk convenience. We’re all super busy these days. Always on the go, and somewhat overscheduled! With online voice lessons, my students are able to sing with me anywhere there is a good Internet connection, including hotel rooms when they are traveling. Even if my student is more local, sometimes they just don’t feel like dealing with traffic, parking, weather, or even leaving their comfortable pajamas.  And I don’t have to worry about making sure my bathroom is sparkling clean!

Online voice lessons have allowed me to teach students from all over the world.  Internationally, I’ve taught students in India, Italy, Mexico, and the Philippines.  I’m in the Bay Area of California, but my time zone has allowed me to teach lessons to students all over the United States as well, including as far away as Maryland, Texas, and Illinois.

With the improvements that have been made in the quality of Skype and FaceTime and other platforms, it really does feel like you are in the same room together. I am able to detect tension, strain, breathiness, etc. every bit as effectively as I am with students taking in-person singing lessons. If a student is using an especially high-quality microphone, I can detect even more issues that need to be addressed. Technology is really something!

What Do I Need for Online Voice Lessons?

In addition to a reliable Internet connection and ideally the best microphone for online voice lessons, all you need is a Skype or FaceTime account, depending on what your teacher uses). Skype is completely free. Lately, more and more teachers have been using Google Helpouts, as well (also free). When it’s time to sing, the student is the one who brings up the mp3 or YouTube video to sing along with on their end, as this is the way to avoid lag and both parties can hear it more effectively this way.

There are so many other bells and whistles I am excited to try out. Screen sharing, for one.  And who knows what other improvements will be made in the near future, or what other platforms will be introduced that allow music instructors to reach out to students from all over?

A Few More Tips for Taking Online Voice Lessons

You’ve already taken the plunge and started taking online voice lessons. Congratulations! You are on your way to a new hobby or, possibly, even a new career. Here are a few more tips to get the most out of your online voice lessons.

Watch the Connection

Make sure you have a good Internet connection. This should be a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people try to take online voice lessons with a spotty Internet connection.

A bad connection can cause audio delays, choppy sound, and even complete dropouts. If your Internet connection is unreliable, you won’t be able to learn as effectively and you’ll end up wasting your time and money.

Get a Good Microphone

We mentioned this already, but it bears mention again because it’s so important.

A lot of people think they can get by with the built-in microphone on their laptop or desktop computer. However, built-in microphones are notoriously bad at picking up sound clearly and accurately.

If you want to get the most out of your online voice lessons, you need to invest in a good quality external microphone. There are many different types and styles of microphones available, so do some research before making your purchase.

Find the Right Location

Find a quiet place to take your lesson. Unless you have a very noise-canceling microphone, it’s important to find a quiet place to take your online voice lesson so that your teacher can hear you clearly.

If possible, find a room in your house that you can close the door to block out any outside noise. Let family members or roommates know when you will be taking your lesson so that they can avoid making noise during that time.

What Are the Best Online Vocal Lessons?

First of all, you’ll want to find a program that is taught by experienced and qualified instructors. TakeLessons is the very best in this regard, with a team of experts who have years of experience teaching students of all levels.

In addition, you’ll want to find a program that is convenient and flexible, so that you can fit it into your busy schedule. TakeLessons definitely fits the bill here, with a range of scheduling options that make it easy to get the lessons you need without having to rearrange your life.

Finally, you’ll want to find a program that is affordable and offers a money-back guarantee. TakeLessons again is the winner!

In Person vs Online Voice Lessons – Which is Right for Me?

There really is no right or wrong as to which medium a student chooses for their voice lessons. It’s entirely a matter of personal preference.  Some really value the personal feel of in-person lessons, but I can’t stress enough how it really does feel like both student and teacher are right there together. My online students have had the opportunity to meet my teaching assistants (my sassy cats!), too . And I get to meet more of their family (human and four-legged) when lessons are online.

So, what are you waiting for? Try an online voice lesson out and you’ll see just how convenient, effective, and fun they are.
