Top 6 Bars With Live Music in DC

DC Bars Playing Live Music

Washington, DC is not only the nation’s capital, it’s also home to dozens of incredible live music venues. DC offers some of the most vibrant and diverse music scenes in the country – and maybe even the world!

Whatever your pleasure – jazz, hip hop, classic rock, or country – it can certainly be found in the heart of DC. If you’re looking for a fun venue to check out a live band, there are many great bars, friendly neighborhood pubs, and larger venues at your disposal.

To get you started, browse through the following list of top-rated venues with live music in the DC area.

Where to Find the Best Live Music in DC

1. Black Cat

Black Cat is located in one of the most hip and happening neighborhoods in DC. There are a lot of bars with live music in the bustling U Street Corridor, but none as legendary as this one.

Since 1993, some of the biggest names in alternative rock and indie have performed here. Black Cat’s Mainstage has hosted everyone from Bad Religion to The Offspring to The Killers. Another perk – you can come hungry! The Food For Thought cafe offers vegan, vegetarian, and organic options.

2. The Anthem

Take a walk along the river at The Wharf to experience some of the best nightlife DC has to offer. We recommend stopping by The Anthem concert hall to see internationally recognized artists perform live, and enjoy the gorgeous waterfront backdrop.

Along the way you’ll be welcomed by a variety of street performers, and you won’t be limited for options of where to eat before or after a show. The Wharf has everything from fine dining to casual cafes.

3. 9:30

The 9:30 Club has been named the # 1 nightclub by Rolling Stone, Billboard and Pollstar, more than any other club in the nation, and it’s the most attended club of its size in the world. January 2016 marked a double anniversary; 35 years since the original club opened and 20 years in its current location.

Its headliners are a diverse mix of performers from indie rock to heavy metal, including hip hop, reggae, electronic, and more. A few of the bands that have performed at the 9:30 include Conor Oberst, Mastodon, Mogwai, and Better Than Ezra. Most shows are general admission and standing room only. A very small number of bar stools are available on a first-come, first-serve basis in the balcony.

4. Union Stage

Also located along the water at The Wharf is Union Stage, which hosts some of the biggest concerts in DC. Union Stage is often referred to as the best new club in the area. Locals rave about the Tap Room (an eclectic, upstairs bar), as well as the pizza and beer selection.

A variety of artists have appeared at Union Stage from Tyrone Wells to Zion I. If you’re looking for a venue with more style and pizzazz though, check out the next option.

5. Rock and Roll Hotel

Located in the artsy and fun H St. Corridor, you’ll find the Rock and Roll Hotel. This venue is full of character, and is the perfect place if you’re looking for some bar food and rock ‘n’ roll. Don’t be surprised when you find out that it’s not actually a hotel, though!

Artists featured at the Rock and Roll Hotel range from garage rock to punk to metal. Locals love the bar’s intimate vibes, happy hour specials, and friendly staff. Bonus – it also has a cozy, heated rooftop deck!

6. Pearl Street Warehouse

Music lovers can enjoy live-and-up-close performances with a side of great food at this new concept from the team behind local favorite Cantina Marina. The intimate venue features a variety of local and regional acts that highlight the diversity of the American music experience. The warehouse is also home to a diner that offers a place for fans to enjoy craft cocktails and creative cuisine during shows.

Whether intimate shows or sold-out arenas are your thing, DC won’t leave you hanging. Want even more options for live music in DC? Take a stroll through Yards Park to hear live performances from some local favorites during the Friday Night Concert Series.
