			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2915" title="WannaPlay2011" src="http://takelessons.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/WannaPlay20111-300x300.gif" alt="WannaPlay2011" width="270" height="270" />During the week of May 2-8, musicians, schools, and other   organizations across the country will come together to celebrate <a href="http://www.wannaplaymusic.com/programs/may-2-8-national-wanna-play-music-week" target="_blank">National Wanna Play Music Week</a>, an annual event sponsored by the   National Association of Music Merchants (<a href="http://www.namm.org/" target="_blank">NAMM</a>).  This  week-long celebration highlights the  importance of <a href="../../info/benefits-of-music-lessons" target="_blank"><span>music  education</span></a> programs in schools and promotes the benefits of  playing music for  people of all ages and skill levels.  NAMM is also a <a href="../../corp/partners" target="_blank">TakeLessons   organizational partner</a>, which is why we are proud to support this   event and power the lesson locator tool on the official <a href="http://www.wannaplaymusic.com/" target="_blank">Wanna Play  Music  website</a>.</p>
<p>Ahead of this year&#8217;s Wanna Play Music week, NAMM has introduced a new initiative called “<a href="http://takelessons.com/blog/2011/03/namm-launches-pledge-to-play-initiative-encouraging-americans-to-take-music-lessons/" target="_blank">Pledge to Play</a>” where interested participants can take a pledge and make  their  commitment to learning an instrument. There&#8217;s still time to sign up on the Pledge to Play <a href="http://www.facebook.com/wannaplaybynamm" target="_blank">Facebook  page</a> &#8211; you&#8217;ll even have the chance to win some cool prizes!</p>
<p>The week will officially kick off on Monday, May 2 with the seventh annual “<a href="http://www.wannaplaymusic.com/programs/music-monday-usa" target="_blank">Music Monday</a>,&#8221; an event in which schools,   community and professional organizations will perform one piece of music   simultaneously at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, 11 a.m. Mountain Time, 12 p.m.   Central Time, and 1 p.m. Eastern Time.  NAMM hopes that by having   everyone sing the same song at the same time, music will transcend all   genres and unite people through the melody and the act of performing the   piece together.  You can register your school or organization as a  participant in Music  Monday <a href="http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07e3f2uhfid1f56a2c&amp;llr=5w7ndndab" target="_blank">online</a> or by emailing <a href="mailto:musicmonday@namm.org">musicmonday@namm.org</a>. If you aren&#8217;t able to play at the designated time, NAMM also encourages participants to pick up an instrument and play at any time throughout the day.</p>
<p>Other events will take place throughout the week, including an announcement of the “Best Communities for Music Education&#8221; on Wednesday, May 4 and a day featuring “unexpected celebrity musicians” on Thursday, May 5.  The week concludes with <a href="http://www.namm.org/news/press-releases/top-10-reasons-love-and-visit-your-local-music-sto" target="_blank">National Music Store Weekend</a> from May 6-8, when musicians and non-musicians alike are encouraged to visit and support local music stores in their neighborhoods. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved during this year&#8217;s Wanna Play Music week, so mark your calendar and get ready to play!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p align="left"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-663" title="Arts license plates" src="http://takelessons.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Arts-license-plates.JPG" alt="Arts license plates" width="248" height="394" />One of our main goals at TakeLessons is to inspire a generation through music.  In addition to the proven mental, physical and emotional <a href="http://takelessons.com/info/benefits-of-music-lessons" target="_blank">benefits of music lessons</a>, music and arts programs provide children with an essential outlet for creativity and inspiration.  However, many states are cutting funding for the arts, decreasing accessibility to these programs among students.</p>
<p align="left">Here in California, the <a href="http://www.cac.ca.gov/" target="_blank">California Arts Council</a> is attempting to combat this issue by encouraging residents to support the arts through the purchase of a personalized <a href="http://www.cac.ca.gov/licenseplate/index.php" target="_blank">Arts license plate</a>.  According to the CAC, sales and renewals of these plates have raised over $20   million for California arts since they were first made available in 1994.  In fact, over    60% of the California Arts Council’s current budget comes from the Arts plate.  All fees for the Arts plate are considered a  <a href="http://www.cac.ca.gov/artsnews/whatsnewdetail.php?id=146" target="_blank">charitable contribution</a>; the CAC&#8217;s goal is to raise $40 million for the arts in California by selling 1 million plates, which would put California among the top states in the nation for arts funding.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Many other states including Florida, South Carolina, Texas and Alabama (just to name a few) offer special Arts license plates; you can find more information on your state&#8217;s <a class="zem_slink" title="Department of Motor Vehicles" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_Motor_Vehicles">Department of Motor Vehicles</a> website.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-302" title="PracticeMakesPerfect" src="http://takelessons.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/PracticeMakesPerfect.gif" alt="PracticeMakesPerfect" width="220" height="217" />When booking new students for <a href="http://takelessons.com/">music lessons</a>, we often hear, &#8220;How long will it take to see results?&#8221;  We tell our customers that it really depends on each student&#8217;s ability to learn and how much dedication and effort they choose to put into it. Meaning, if a student is enrolled in weekly lessons but fails to show up for lessons and/or practice regularly, they probably won&#8217;t see a drastic improvement. However, if they attend their scheduled lessons while continuing to practice and push themselves, they will be amazed at what they can accomplish.</p>
<p>When we explain this to parents, another concern usually arises &#8211; &#8220;How can I help encourage my child to practice and stay engaged in lessons?&#8221; The good news is that there are many ways parents can help keep their children excited about their lessons. <p><em>Tips for Music Teachers: Young Guitar Students, Parents &amp; Practice</em></p>
<p><em>Each year, I am approached by parents who request that I teach <a href="http://takelessons.com/category/guitar-lessons">guitar lessons</a> to their children.  I am always flattered that they would choose me to teach their child.  The child is usually enthusiastic as they begin their musical journey.  After about a month, the student’s attitude begins to shift from enthusiasm to the realization that they have undertaken a lifelong journey of learning.  Based on my experience, I have observed a number of ways parents can help keep their kids engaged in the process.</em></p>
<p><em>1. Stay informed about the lessons.  Parental involvement in the learning process is essential.  Students, oftentimes, get caught up in the details of the lesson that they are learning.  In this situation, they tend to lose sight of the long term goals.  Parents can lend a “big picture” perspective to the child.  Parental involvement can be anything from visiting with the teacher after each lesson to view the material that has been assigned to actually taking lessons with the student.  Taking lessons together is a great way for parent and child to foster a common interest.  Oftentimes, the parent can actually assist the student at home and can even practice together.</em></p>
<p><em>2.  The importance of the teacher’s attitude toward each student, and their progress, cannot be overstated.  The teacher must communicate with the parents each little “victory” in the learning process.  Honest communication to the parents of the areas which are going well, as well as areas which need improvement is very helpful in keeping the student engaged in the process.</em></p>
<p><em>3.  Parents, just like teachers, can develop creative ways to keep students practicing.  These strategies can include:  seeing that the student use play-a-long Cds, recording practice time, practicing with the student, and taking the student to performances of great artists.  Parental involvement in this way can be very effective in helping the student achieve both <a href="http://takelessons.com/info/certified-music-teacher">short term and long term goals</a>.</em></p>
<p><em>Learning is, quite simply, not a “one size fits all” process.  A <a class="zem_slink" title="Harvard University" rel="homepage" href="http://www.harvard.edu/">Harvard</a> education professor once stated that “you cannot make some learn something.  You can only create circumstances under which they want to learn the subject.”  Therein lies the great challenge for any teacher.  Common sense parental involvement can go a long way toward creating such an environment.</em></p>

<p>In a world of pointless status updates (&#8220;ahhh, cake&#8221;) and spammy get rich quick schemes (&#8220;learn about THIS teeth whitening secret!&#8221;), <a class="zem_slink" title="Twitter" rel="homepage" href="http://twitter.com">Twitter</a> can actually be used for <em>actual </em>networking. It&#8217;s true. In fact, about a month ago, we were lucky to meet <a href="http://gearpipe.org/about-our-founder/">Jeremy Brieske</a>, founder of <a href="http://gearpipe.org">gearpipe.org </a>via Twitter. In a tweet, Jeremy proposed that &#8220;<span><span>music education needs it&#8217;s own Twitter hashtag&#8230; <a title="#MusicEd" href="http://twitter.com/search?q=%23MusicEd">#MusicEd</a></span></span>&#8221; and we happily followed suit and started communicating back and forth.</p>
<p>Through communication and research, we learned that gearpipe.org&#8217;s mission is to &#8220;mobilize musicians and music lovers to donate to music education charities, thereby supporting and giving back to a new generation of musicians.&#8221;  As a music lessons provider, we strongly support this mission and wanted to give Jeremy props for creating such an awesome site with such a meaningful purpose.</p>
<p>Each month, gearpipe.org teams up with a musical instrument retailer and a musical education charity and donates a percentage of sales from gearpipe.org users to that month&#8217;s charity. They work with their retail partners to ensure the process is easy for the users and that all proceeds are donated to the correct charity.</p>
<p>This month, the featured charity is <a class="zem_slink" title="DonorsChoose.org" rel="homepage" href="http://donorschoose.org">DonorsChoose.org</a> and the retail partner is <a href="http://www.americanmusical.com/">American Musical Supply</a>. September&#8217;s charity was Little Kids Rock and the retail partner was Musician&#8217;s Friend.</p>

We love his music and his <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy" rel="wikipedia" title="Philosophy">philosophy</a> of endorsing the value of <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_education" rel="wikipedia" title="Music education">music education</a> for all. Here is a recent <a href="http://www.jasonmraz.com/#/journal/">&quot;Journal&quot; entry</a> he posted on July 9, 2009 on his own site about the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gratitude" rel="wikipedia" title="Gratitude">gratitude</a> he feels towards all the people who have given him the gift of music in his life:</p>
<p>I am grateful to have music in my life. My mom was the first person to turn me on to it. She sat me at the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano" rel="wikipedia" title="Piano">piano</a>, shaped my fingers to help me make sense of chords, and we would play <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chopsticks" rel="wikipedia" title="Chopsticks">chopsticks</a> over and over again. My step-dad, an incredible drummer, gave me a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drum_kit" rel="wikipedia" title="Drum kit">drum kit</a> for my 10th birthday. That gift taught me the essential rock/rap beat, a cross-stick over the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hi-hat" rel="wikipedia" title="Hi-hat">hi-hat</a> and <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snare_drum" rel="wikipedia" title="Snare drum">snare</a> while the foot slams the kick on the 1 and 3. Even if I never pursued music as a career, those few musical moments introduced me to an organized and expressive way of being that would carry over into friendships and academics, improving my attitude and overall performance at school.</p>
<p>I am so grateful for the many, many amazing music teachers in the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_school" rel="wikipedia" title="Public school">public schools</a> who kept me enrolled in the power of self-expression and group participation. I am thankful for that extraordinary study of sound and the opportunity to play when the age was most appropriate for playing.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.vh1savethemusic.com/">Please support arts programs in your community, especially in the schools.</a> At the very least, it&#39;ll give the graffiti on the overpass some depth. </p>
<p>Jason Mraz&#39;s enthusiasm and passion for <a href="http://takelessons.com/">music education</a> for all echoes our own sentiments and our desire to inspire a generation through the power of music.</p>

<p>Tell your Members of <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.house.gov/" rel="homepage" title="United States Congress">Congress</a> that when the No Child Left Behind Act is reauthorized, Congress should provide flexibility in the law for music and arts programs.</p>
<p>Every child in America deserves to have a complete, well-rounded education that includes music and arts education. <p>The music began in a pair of settlement houses in 1910. Within those institutions, the <a href="http://www.cmcb.org/">Community Music Center of Boston</a> initially offered education and a sense of community to recent immigrants. Since 1971, the center has been housed at the Boston Center for the Arts in the South End, but its mission has remained consistent: to provide music instruction to urban students of varying ages and skill levels. They include some 5,500 students each week, many of them enabled by the $150,000-plus in scholarships given out annually.<a href="http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2009/09/04/celebrating_100_years_of_community_music/" style="float: right;"><img alt="Community Music Center Students" border="0" class="at-xid-6a011168fec285970c0120a5494bbe970b " src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/old/ksmtatujmfdh" style="width: 257px; height: 202px;" title="Community Music Center Students" /></a> </p>
<p>The Community Music Center is marking its centennial with a series of 100 concerts, the first of which is next Friday at the Boston Arts Festival in the North End’s Christopher Columbus Park. The concerts will run through June 2011 and will range from solo recitals and orchestral performances to jazz and world music. According to David Lapin, the center’s executive director, virtually all of the concerts will be free, and more than half will take place in Boston schools. The Boston Public Library will also host an exhibition of Center memorabilia from January through April.</p>
<p>Lapin says that in its first years, the center focused on Eastern European immigrant children and the small African-American population that had migrated from the South.</p>
<p>“Obviously, we have a much fuller orbit to travel today,’’ he says. The school’s population now includes students from Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America. In the 1980s it began working with people with AIDS; more recently it has been reaching out to children with autism and older adults with Alzheimer’s disease.</p>
<p>“What we’ve tried to do, in each decade, is not simply look to respond to <a href="http://takelessons.com/boston-music-lessons?s=gl">demand that’s out there for music lessons</a>, but to create demand where it might not otherwise exist,’’ says Lapin, who has led the center since 1983. “We’re not just waiting for people to come through the door; we’re trying to create new relationships in the community and nurture a demand for arts education generally.’’<a href="http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2009/09/04/celebrating_100_years_of_community_music/" style="float: right;"><img alt="String Students" border="0" class="at-xid-6a011168fec285970c0120a549509e970b " src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/old/fbgunhobpcpi" style="width: 290px; height: 218px;" title="String Students" /></a> </p>
<p>That’s why the concerts &#8211; which Lapin calls “a gift to the city’’ &#8211; will be as much about outreach as about public music-making. Many will feature students from schools with which the center has had long-running partnerships, but there will also be what Lapin calls “reasonably high-end performers’’ in the recital series and in special events.</p>
<p>“It reflects the twin goals of access and excellence in both education and programming more generally,’’ Lapin explains. “It’s part and parcel of what we do on a regular basis, but we’re trying to enhance the visibility of the music center and use [the concerts] as a way to not only celebrate the music center [but also] try to raise higher the banner of arts education throughout the city.’’</p>
<p>Some of the notable events include “Performathon,’’ the center’s annual daylong fund-raising concert, and a student composer venture with the new-music ensemble Dinosaur Annex. One set of performances seems particularly intriguing: the entire cycle of <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_van_Beethoven" rel="wikipedia" title="Ludwig van Beethoven">Beethoven</a> symphonies in arrangements for solo piano, four-hand piano, and two pianos. That series &#8211; which opens with the first two symphonies on Dec. 10 &#8211; should provide an interesting counterpart to the Boston <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchestra" rel="wikipedia" title="Orchestra">Symphony Orchestra</a>’s performances of the symphonies.</p>
<p>Like other arts institutions, the center has been affected by the recent economic downturn. Lapin found that “the demand for arts education is relatively inelastic; people will still pay for education more than they might pay for tickets to a performance.’’ The largest decline has been in contributions: Lapin says that during the winter, “no one knew what was going on, and so basically, people stopped giving for a few months. And that was pretty scary, quite frankly.’’</p>
<p>Though the situation has since stabilized, Lapin is taking nothing for granted. “We’ll see,’’ he says. “Like everyone else, we have more than one set of fingers crossed.’’</p>

<p>The 106 members of the Philharmonic returned Thursday from a historic visit to North Korea, which is locked in frosty negotiations with the United States over its nuclear weapons program. It was the biggest American delegation to visit the communist country since the Korean War.</p>
<p>The pinnacle of the trip was a concert broadcast to the world last Tuesday. And the next morning, four members of the orchestra and four North Korean musicians performed an octet by <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felix_Mendelssohn" rel="wikipedia" title="Felix Mendelssohn">Felix Mendelssohn</a>, with Taslima&#39;s piece squeezed in at the end.</p>
<p>&quot;It was a wild-card thing,&quot; said Jon Deak, a Philharmonic double bass player who runs the orchestra&#39;s teaching program for child composers&#8230;.</p>
<p>She had originally written it for the entire Philharmonic two years ago, and it was played at one of the orchestra&#39;s Young People&#39;s Concerts at Lincoln Center.</p>
<p>But she scaled down the work for a smaller group of musicians &#8211; clarinet, violin, cello and double bass, including the Philharmonic&#39;s top violinist, concertmaster <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.GlennDicterow.com/" rel="homepage" title="Glenn Dicterow">Glenn Dicterow</a>&#8230;.</p>
<p>Farah, who attends a gifted children&#39;s school at Manhattan&#39;s M.S. 54, started composing as a third-grader at P.S. 199, where Deak &#8211; also a composer &#8211; introduced his Very Young Composers program sponsored by the orchestra.</p>
<p>For the musically gifted youngster more interested in jazz than classical music, the NY Gifted Examiner spoke to David O’Rourke, Artistic Director of the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra (JSYO), about opportunities available for boys and girls with his organization.</div>

<p>At a time when<br />
arts education programs in public schools continue to diminish, it’s<br />
imperative that we ensure all school-aged children have access to a<br />
quality education that includes music. Studies have shown that music<br />
study improves children’s SAT scores, basic math and reading abilities,<br />
self-esteem, empathy for various cultures, interpersonal communication<br />
skills, self-expression, and the list goes on and on. </p>
<p>For the<br />
eighth consecutive season, the Jazz Standard, the nation’s premier jazz<br />
club, and JSYO, a breeding ground for NYC’s talented young musicians,<br />
are providing numerous performance opportunities, priceless musical<br />
education and insight from today’s top jazz professional musicians, as<br />
well as collegiate auditions and scholarships for hundreds of children<br />
between the ages of 11and 18,&#0160; all while motivating the next generation<br />
of up-and-coming artists.&#0160; </p>
<p>The vast majority of our JSYO<br />
alumni pursue music in college, many testing out on several of their<br />
first year courses due to their performance experience with us. Little<br />
did I realize when we launched this program in 2002, that through music<br />
I would find myself helping to prep kids for their college auditions,<br />
helping place some of them in performing arts high schools, alongside<br />
helping to develop prodigious young talent. We audition kids from La<br />
Guardia High School, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the local community<br />
and schools to identify students to participate in the program each<br />
year. We see a trend developing where our musicians are coming to us at<br />
an increasingly younger age while their level of playing is already<br />
quite developed. Our youngest members are 11 years old!</p>
<p>In<br />
addition to the kids’ private teachers and school band directors, the<br />
JSYO provides these youngsters with the greatest of all teachers:<br />
regular live performance. We launched JAZZ FOR KIDS, a weekly<br />
performance at Jazz Standard that involves the JSYO playing for the<br />
general public. JAZZ FOR KIDS offers our student musicians the<br />
opportunity to play exciting new arrangements of big band classics such<br />
as <em>St. Louis Blues</em> and <em>Don’t’ Be That Way</em>, Big Band charts such as <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.milesdavis.com/" rel="homepage" title="Miles Davis">Miles Davis</a>’ <em>So What</em>,<br />
and jazz compositions by the likes of <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.last.fm/music/Duke%2BEllington%2B%2526%2BHis%2BOrchestra" rel="lastfm" title="Duke Ellington &amp; His Orchestra">Duke Ellington</a>, Cedar Walton, <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.last.fm/music/Wes%2BMontgomery" rel="lastfm" title="Wes Montgomery">Wes<br />

<p>In his song, Carroll says another passenger saw Carroll&#39;s guitar being tossed by a United employee. When the airplane arrived in Nebraska, Carroll discovered that the guitar had been broken.</p>
<p>United declined to do anything for Carroll, but that was before his song became a YouTube hit, with nearly 600,000 hits by this afternoon after posting it this past Monday, July 6th.</p>
<p>Now, Julie Johnsson of the <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-biz-united-breaks-guitars-video-ual-july8,0,4414385.story">Chicago Tribune</a> reports, United may be singing a different tune:</p>
<p>&quot;This struck a chord with us,&quot; said Robin Urbanski, spokeswoman for Chicago-based United. &quot;We are in conversation with one another to make what happened right.&quot;</p>
<p>We transcribed the lyrics to &quot;United Breaks Guitars,&quot; by Dave Carroll and his fellow band members, <a href="http://www.sonsofmaxwell.com/">Sons of Maxwell</a>:</p>
<p>I flew United Airlines<br />On my way to Nebraska<br />The plane departed Halifax<br />Connecting in Chicago’s O’Hare.</p>
<p>While on the ground the passenger<br />Said from the seat behind me,<br />“My God, they’re throwing guitars out there!”</p>
<p>The Band and I exchanged a look<br />Best described as terror, <br />At the action on the tarmac <br />And knowing whose projectiles<br />These would be. </p>
<p>So before I left Chicago,<br />I alerted three employees,<br />Who showed complete indifference towards me.</p>
<p>United, United,<br />You broke my Taylor Guitar.<br />United, United,<br />Some big help you are.</p>
<p>You broke it, you should fix it.<br />You’re liable, just admit it. <br />I should have flown with someone else<br />Or gone by car,<br />Cuz United Breaks Guitars.</p>
<p>When we landed in Nebraska, <br />I confirmed what I’d suspected:<br />My Taylor’d been the victim <br />Of a vicious act of malice at O’Hare.</p>
<p>And so began a year-long saga<br />Of pass the buck, “Don’t ask me,”<br />And “I’m sorry sir, your claim can go nowhere.”</p>
<p>So to all the Airline’s people<br />From New York to New Delhi, <br />Including kind Miss Irlweg <br />Who says the final word from them is “No.”</p>
<p>I’ve heard all your excuses<br />And I’ve chased your wild gooses,<br />And this attitude of yours I say must go.</p>

<p>Here&#39;s the short version of the story from Carroll&#39;s Web site, <a href="http://www.davecarrollmusic.com/" target="_blank">davecarrollmusic.com</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to<br />
Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being<br />
thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered<br />
later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didn&#39;t deny the<br />
experience occurred but for nine months the various people I<br />
communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on<br />
everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing<br />
to compensate me for my loss. So I promised the last person to finally<br />
say &quot;no&quot; to compensation (Ms. Irlweg) that I would write and produce<br />
three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos<br />
for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world. United: Song 1 is<br />
the first of those songs. United: Song 2 has been written and video<br />
production is underway. United: Song 3 is coming. I promise.</p>
