If I could earn a living while doing what I love most, it would involve reading. I am an avid reader and have been since I was a little boy. I was fortunate to have parents that surrounded me with books and read to me every night. I strongly believe that my successes are directly attributed to my love of reading.

It deeply saddens me to think of how many of our nation’s youth either do not like reading, do not have access to books to read, or simply cannot read. If I could play even the smallest part in changing our youths’ circumstances, I would. Reading is a passion that has opened so many doors for me- not only academically but also on a deeper, more thought provoking level.

As a high school student, I had the opportunity to work with young students who struggled to read. I discovered that some of the most rewarding moments came from working with these students while building phonics skills and developing reading strategies. Reading opened up doors to potential future opportunities for these students- astronauts, teachers, doctors and firefighters, for example.

I cannot change the world all at once; however, I can do it a few students at a time. Exposing students to adventures around the world through books would be an amazing start. Getting kids to realize that there is more to their lives than what currently surrounds them would be the simple jump-start needed to encourage a love of reading.
