If I could earn a living as an architect who focuses on sustainability, I would focus my work on re-imagining what mainstream believes is passive energy usage. I believe that every building could be designed to be energy neutral, perhaps even energy positive. By harnessing the knowledge of nature and how it works I truly believe that we could live in sync with this world without completely depleting the natural resources. By recycling older buildings making them fit the requirements of energy neutral and all new buildings within the standards of achieving energy positive, I believe that we could solve the energy crisis we face with the dwindling supply of fossil fuels. Our world needs ideas that build a future that doesn’t focus our efforts on dirty energy like burning coal or fossil fuels but on the concepts of; solar, wind, hydro-electric, geo-thermal, passive heating and cooling, green walls, and methane collection from trash. We have these and more burgeoning fields out there that are fantastic but won’t be enough alone, if we employed them all we could change our entire way of life. I want to build that future with all those ideas. I would be starting with how we look at our public and private buildings and how we design them to impress or intimidate instead of bringing us together in harmony with each other and nature. This is the dream I plan to bring to life with an architecture degree and a legacy to leave my daughter.
