If I could earn a living doing what I love, my goal would be to help single mothers who are struggling. I would like to open a non-profit facility for single mothers where they can live and share affordable childcare. The facility would have workshops on how to find jobs that pay well, tutorials on basic computer tools such as Microsoft Project and Microsoft Word, parenting classes and onsite career counselors. I would also like to recruit volunteer legal counsel to be available to help the women with custody issues or other legal concerns that they may have. All of these programs would be offered free of charge and rent would be charged on a sliding-scale based on income.
I was 18 years old when I had my son and simple things have been a struggle for me for many years. Things like finding reliable and affordable child care have greatly limited my career as I’ve tried to provide for my small family. I have come out better than most in my situation, owing largely to my support system. Most women who are young, single parents don’t have that luxury. I would like to give back to society the help that I’ve received along the way. I believe strong families with career and educational opportunities are the key to changing the world. With the support to pursue their dreams these women can lift their families out of poverty and provide a brighter future for their children.
