There is a desperate need for women’s shelters in the area along with the need for resources to help these women be self sufficient and not return to their abuser. As an abused women, who stayed at one of the shelters I saw the desperation and lack of needed resources to help them. Due to lack of funding, many of the shelters closed and many women are turned away. I would like to help resolve this situation. I would team up with the local high school to get those living at the shelter their GED, many of the women are lacking in an education to some degree. This would be an important first step to helping them get back on their feet. The local colleges would be another step, I would enlist the colleges as well as some of their clubs such as Women Helping Women and Enactus to hold mock interviews and collect professional attire for the women, to prepare them for an interview. The Business majors would be a great resource to look to as well. Another avenue would be to hold basic classes such as English, math and writing to help these women gain confidence. Another major step would be to have support groups for the women, teach about the circle of violence and learn to recognize the patterns of domestic violence. I also think it’s imperative to offer self-defense classes to all women to help deter violence on women. All of these things combined to get a woman out of an abusive situation would give me a great sense of satisfaction. I’m not sure I could earn a good living, but knowing I was able to help someone out, like myself at one point, would give me a great sense of accomplishment and help others in a bad situation.
