I am studying to be a Nurse and Mount Saint Mary’s College in Newburgh, NY. I have worked, volunteered, and shadowed in many different medical care facilities and am set to begin my clinical work this coming year. I have found that doing what I want and earning a living could very well be what I am working to achieve in the nursing field. However I believe that doing what I love most goes beyond becoming a certain profession, and extends into what I want to achieve with this acquired knowledge; working with groups such as Doctors Without Borders and Red Cross/ Red Crescent in developing countries. I come from a very closed minded culture, where the definition of happiness and economic success are one in the same, so I believe that by going abroad and helping those who are in need of professional care, I will also help educate those who are close to my culture to understand that happiness and gratification could stem from being selfless and caring. So when I approached my parents and asked for their blessing to do something that I think could really help humanity, I expected them to be worried maybe even scared, however I hope that in time they could learn of the pride and gratification that comes by helping others directly.
