I have always had a heart for working with children, specifically those with special needs. I would love to eventually be certified to assess and diagnose children with autism so that they can get their IEP’s. It is disheartening and baffling to me how little awareness there is revolving around autism. The goal of many experts and physicians is not to cure autism nor is it to ignore it but to make it more manageable, and to help friends and peers of children with autism understand it as not a social disorder but simply a different way of processing the world. This viewpoint and lack of empathy can be so frustrating to those on the spectrum. As Dr. Temple Grandin, a famous autistic professor, activist, and livestock specialist, promotes in all of her lectures “the world needs all kinds of minds.” When I graduate and begin working with this unique and fascinating group of children it will be my goal to help them understand what they are going through and eventually help raise acceptance among their classmates to reduce bullying. I would also like to set up support groups for parents of children with autism who may not be aware of the cognitive process of their children. I plan to graduate with a degree in Counseling Psychology and work in a school as a guidance counselor while I work on getting my LPC or graduate degree so that I can eventually get a job with the state as a Psychometrist
