I discovered my passion, the distinct magic held in books, at a young age when I graduated quickly from being read stories at bedtime to reading my own picture books, chapter books, novels. I’ll read whatever I can get my hands on, sometimes pulling out a highlighter to mark my favorite bits. Books are the purest kind of magic. They are a portal into another world, a kind of travel in and of themselves; a tether between reader and author; a basis for friendships; a means of taking a stand. Books were my first love and they’ll surely be my last, speaking to me in a way that no person ever has. Reading is magic because it lets one do anything, whole worlds confined to the pages of books, just waiting to be released.
To earn a living doing what I love most would be to earn a living by reading. There are several existing careers where I could effectively earn a living this way, such as editing or being a literary critic, but no existing career would be so satisfying as being paid to simply read for pleasure. Opening up this career path would change the world because it would allow people to expand their minds and hearts through their love of literature and use their knowledge thus gained in order to help others. When each person pursues their passion everyone is able to live life to the fullest, thereby bettering the world as a whole.
