The Key to Happiness

Essay Question: If you could earn a living doing what you love most, what would it be, and how would it change the world? Describe the specific goals you would set to make that dream a reality.

Perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions in human history is this: “What is the key to happiness?” As human beings, we have a natural drive for self-preservation, but also one for happiness. Ironically, these two instincts sometimes conflict. If I could earn a living doing anything in the world, I would become a permanent volunteer and travel to places all over the world, doing nothing except helping people better their lives. I believe that the true key to happiness is losing yourself in service to others. Perhaps my dream would not change the world on a global, CNN-broadcast, everyone-knows-my-name scale, but it would change the world of the people that I had helped, and to me, that is the greater outcome. I believe that there is no more heart-warming feeling than anonymous kindness– the smile on someone’s face when they receive unexpected love is unparalleled. I have already decided that I will achieve my goal. I have obtained a passport so that I may travel, perhaps not all over the world, but to at least a few places where I can be of assistance to those in need. I have started saving more of my money to afford plane tickets and I have been looking into organizations such as Global Volunteers and BUNAC. I believe that, with this scholarship, I would be years closer to making my dream a reality.
